From La Garde-Guérin to the Chassezac Gorges - return via the Roure plateau

From the medieval village of La Garde-Guérin, there is a steep descent into the Chassezac gorges, then a climb up to the opposite plateau and finally back to the village via the hamlet of Albespeyres.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park, go around the village of La Garde-Guérin on the right, then take the path on the right towards Le Mont (or La Viale or Souliol).

(1) At a large wooden cross and the sign for "La Ritournelle", take the path on the left towards Le Béal (La Chalmette, Souliol) and descend along the beautiful path overlooking the gorges.

(2) At the "Le Béal" sign, turn left towards La Chalmette (Le Roure) and follow the path that leads into the gorges.

(3) Cross the Chassezac via the footbridge and take the path opposite. This climbs up to the plateau opposite to reach the hamlet of La Chalmette, a stone hamlet frozen in time.

(4) Go around the hamlet on the left, then turn left to reach Le Roure with its tower.

(5) Walk about 100 metres along the road, then turn onto the path on the left. Continue along this path.

(6) Cross the Chassezac again via a bridge near the railway line before climbing back up to the hamlet of Albespeyres, following the small road that leads there and taking a shortcut on the left after the crossroads. Pass the hamlet.

(7) Shortly afterwards, leave the road and take theGR®72on the right, which runs alongside the golf course and the D906.

(8) Cross the road and continue on the right to reach La Garde-Guérin (S/E).

Practical information

in 2018, this circuit did not present any particular difficulties (apart from the elevation gain and length, which could put off some hikers, leading me to change the difficulty level).
However, we have just done this hike again (clockwise) and it turns out that work has been carried out on the water channel to restore it, but as this work has not been completed, the trail has become much more difficult. In fact, at times it disappears completely and is very slippery in many places, as you have to walk in water from the water channel to the footbridge.
Photos taken from the other side of the rope bridge in 2018 showed a dry surface, whereas now water is flowing everywhere, which makes no sense at all

A beautiful hike, completed on 16 December 2024 in unfavourable conditions (2 degrees, cold wind, light sleet, slippery ground in places...) but in magnificent surroundings. The descent to the Chassezac from the GG was a little vertiginous, then we crossed a nearly new rope and wood bridge; finally, a steep climb back up to the villages of Chalmette and Roure. The end of the route was peaceful via the GG golf course. A real treat!

Hike completed within the specified time on 12 September 2024 in mixed weather without rain, clockwise to tackle the difficult sections at the start.
With a variety of atmospheres, terrain, paths and panoramic views, this hike is magnificent.
The descent is steep but accessible.
The rope bridge is new.
However, the start of the climb on the opposite slope is very tricky, too difficult for elderly people or young children (it's better to go anti-clockwise, as descending this section is tough!). To make matters worse, a lot of water was running down this very steep section.
A handrail was installed at the beginning, but it would be a good idea to add more until you reach the small water channel a little further up.
The rest of the climb offers a mystical forest atmosphere, and the return via the plateau and the various small hamlets is a nice reward for the effort made at the start of the route.
Be careful, after Roure, there are two marked paths that branch off to the left. The first one takes you back down to the bottom of the gorge, which is not the same elevation!
Thank you

Very few people around, even though it was Pentecost Sunday, but this should be put into perspective given the stormy weather
The passage after the footbridge is a little tricky and must be taken in the direction described

We did this hike on Monday, 30 August 2021.
It is a very beautiful hike, the descent into the Chassezac Gorges and the climb up to the plateau are gradual and therefore not difficult. The short break on the banks of the Chassezac was a real treat, even though we didn't go swimming (the water was a little too cold for us)
We were a little apprehensive about the return trip from the plateau to La Garde Guérin because we thought it would be monotonous, but it was actually very pleasant. The blackberries along the way were delicious, and the hamlet of Le Roure was magnificent, as was La Garde Guérin.
Thank you for suggesting this hike. We'll definitely do it again soon to enjoy the autumn colours.

This hike was magnificent, although physically demanding in the middle of summer during the descent into the gorges. I recommend doing the loop in the direction described and not in reverse. The path is well marked.
At first, the hike through the countryside isn't particularly impressive. Then you descend to the banks of the Chassezac, where you can take a break in the peace and quiet by the water. As you cross the Roure plateau, you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view. As you descend into the gorge, you will see beautiful waterfalls, a suspension bridge and lovely clear pools where you can swim. I recommend taking the time to recharge your batteries here and cool off a little in the summer heat before tackling the steep climb back up. BEWARE, a good half of the route is not in the shade, so take precautions in summer.

From Villefort Lake, 580 metres of elevation gain seems a bit low to me...

We set off from Lac de Villefort, heading towards La Garde Guerin, and then we did the circuit with a slight variation: at the village of Le Roure, we followed the signs for "La Garde Guerin".
The route is approximately 18 km long and does not require any particular technical skills. It is very well signposted (impossible to get lost) and crosses the Chassezac twice, once on a suspension bridge and once by hopping from rock to rock.
Elevation gain: 800 m, elevation loss: 800 m, hike time: 4 hours 50 minutes (including lunch and lots of photos)
We were very surprised not to meet any other hikers on this loop, which is well worth the trip for the beauty of the Chassezac Gorges and Lake Villefort.
Highly recommended hike.

A lovely route with a few steep sections but no technical difficulties.
Very beautiful section on a suspension bridge over the river and large rocks in the sun for a picnic by the river

Hello
Thanks for this wonderful route, the gorges are truly superb
The route is quite difficult, about 12 km, but so beautiful, and we didn't lose the trail with our phones
i was able to swim in the river (which was cool) and I can confirm the water source near the village of La Chalmette, which was very welcome.
And to finish off in style, a nice beer on the terrace at La Garde Guerin

The trail you mention, which descends into the gorges, is certainly much more attractive, but there is a significant risk of not being able to cross the Chassezac depending on the time of year or if there has been heavy rain in the days leading up to the hike.
Thank you for pointing out the water source near the village of La Chalmette.
