Saint-Privat-d'Allier - Saugues

(S) From the campsite, go down the access road and turn right at the intersection. In the right-hand bend, take the white path downhill, marked in white and red and with a shell symbol, and join the D301.

(1) Turn right onto the hard shoulder of the main road , taking care to stay safe. A few metres after the village exit sign, cross the main road carefully and continue along the stony path heading west to the D301.

(2) Cross the road again and continue along the uphill path. Cross the hamlet of Combriaux and continue to the Y-junction.

(3) Take the path through the woods that branches off to the right of the Y and continue along the Saint-Jacques de Compostelle path to the hamlet of Rochegude. In the hamlet, climb up to the tower and chapel to admire the view.

(4) From the promontory, descend back towards the hamlet and follow the steeply sloping path to the right until you reach the junction with the D301.

(5) Turn left , taking care, and walk to the yellow house, then turn left after it onto the tree-lined path. Cross the hamlet of Pratclaux, then cross the D301 again.

(6) Continue along the path through the fields at the high-voltage pylons.

(7) Continue right downhill to the village of Monistrol-d'Allier.

(8) At the bus shelter, turn right towards Monistrol-d'Allier Le Bourg. Pass in front of the town hall, cross the Allier river on the Effel bridge, then continue along Rue des Jacquets. ( Please note: this is the last refreshment point before Sauges. Refreshments are available at Épicerie l'Ami Boulanger, 3 Rue des Lombard, 43580 Monistrol-d'Allier.)

(9) At the edge of the village (lowest point of the route), at the silos, turn right onto Montée de la Madeleine and begin a long climb that will first take you to the Chapelle Saint-Madeleine.

(10) After the chapel, turn right at the hamlet of Escluzels and continue climbing along the Escluzels road.

(11) Cross the D589 and continue along a winding path. When you reach the hamlet of Montaure, you will have reached the end of this long climb.

(12) At the second intersection, continue south-west on the^GR®5to arrive at the hamlet of Roziers after the high-voltage power line.

(13) Turn right and continue west on the^GR®65to the hamlet of Le Vernet.

(14) Turn left at the entrance to the hamlet and continue to the hamlet of Rognac

(15) Cross the hamlet and continue to the junction with the D589.

(16) Turn left/right onto the departmental road and continue to the town of Sauges via Rue des Cimes in the wrong direction. At the bottom of this street, turn left onto Rue des Demoiselles, then take the second right onto Avenue Lucien Gires. Continue along the avenue, pass the Tourist Office and head towards Grandieu. Pass the Casino store (where you can stock up on supplies). At the telephone booth, continue towards Malzieu and the campsite. At the plumbing and sanitary company, take the small one-way road on the right to reach Camping de la Seuge (E).

Le Compostel’Bus Information:
The Compostel'Bus runs between Le Puy and Conques. It allows you to shorten a stage, return to a train station or pick up your car in Le Puy. Timetables are available on the website. There are stops in the villages along the route. La Malle Postale also offers this service. The price depends on the route taken.

The Chapel of Rochegude. (4) Overlooking the Allier, the chapel is a very pretty viewpoint. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1974 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Chapel of La Madeleine (9) is located in Monistrol-d'Allier, built in the caves of the village of Escluzels and dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.
The Gorges de l'Allier are a canyon carved out by the Allier River. It is a natural site that has become a tourist attraction with the introduction of a train that runs along the gorges between the departments of Haute-Loire and Lozère.
The Beast of Gévaudan. In the 18th century, Aubrac and Margeride were teeming with wolves. One of them would leave a lasting impression... From 1764 to 1767, it wreaked havoc in the Saugues region, responsible for more than 100 attacks on women and children. The Beast of Gévaudan quickly became a matter of state, going beyond a simple news item. King Louis XV even sent his arquebusier, who finally killed a large wolf in September 1765.
