Easy walk around Wingate area. Look out for the Miner's Trail sculptures.

This trail traces the history of mining in the villages around Station Town, Wingate, Trimdon Station, Wheatley Hill, and Thornley. The route is marked by disks.

This walk takes in the main visitor attractions in Durham, starting from the Howlands Park and Ride, visiting the Oriental Museum, Botanical Gardens, Castle, Cathedral and Market Place. There are some steep hills, but a bus can be caught from Elvet back to the Park and Ride.

This walk takes in Wingate Quarry Nature Reserve and Wingate Welfare Park with its football pitch, bowling green, play park and woodland walk. The walk first follows a green lane and passes through the site of Wingate Grange pit, then on the return follows the track of the old Wingate railway line.

This walk follows the promenade around the historic Hartlepool Headland including St Hilda's Church and the Heugh Gun Battery. Perfect for a stroll on a sunny day. Look out for information boards with the infamous Hartlepool Monkey.

This is a relaxing walk around the River Wear in Durham City. The footpaths are mostly paved making this suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Where there are steps, alternatives have been provided. There are some lovely visitas from which the castle and cathedral can be viewed.

This short, relatively flat walk loops around the River Wear from the Boathouse to Maiden Castle and back along the other side of the river giving views of the castle and cathedral and plenty of places for a picnic. This walk is wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

This loop will take you around the peninsula giving great views of Durham Castle, Cathedral and the River Wear. This relatively flat and therefore suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Starting from Filey Country Park Car Park, this circular walk takes in the beach, seafront and town. There are plenty of places to stop off for lunch or coffee and attractions such as crazy golf and parks along the way.

This short, flat walk is easy to do with children. It can be broken up with activities, but be aware there are no railings on the north side of the pier.

This short walk around the university showcases the best the campus has to offer. It is suitable for a lunchtime walk for staff and students, and for a longer walk taking in the Botanical Gardens and Oriental Museum. The walk is accessible, but be ready for a steep climb through the Botanical Gardens.

This 1rst section of the Durham Round Trail, around Durham area, is easy to access allowing interesting heritage discoveries. Starting at the Cathedral, the trail follows the River Wear around the peninsula before leaving the city climbing to Brasside and finishing at Finchale Priory.

This section of the England Coast Path starts at St Mary's Lighthouse and follows the coast through Whitley Bay and Cullercoats finishing at Tynemouth Priory. The walk itself follows the cliff tops for some time and then the promenade. However for those requiring pavements, the first part of the walk can follow the road rather than the cliff tops. This walk can be done in either direction as a section of the England Coast Path (or as an out and back).

Amble marks the start (or end) of the England Coast Path, however this will be extended further into Northumberland in time. Amble is known as the 'friendliest port' and is a good place to explore before starting the walk along the dunes with stunning beaches and nature reserves to explore along the way.

This walk along the dunes and golden sandy beach passes a number of nature reserves. There is an abundance of wildlife but also grazing animals along this stretch, it is nature at its best.

From Cresswell, the England Coast path continues to wind its way across the dunes but for much of the walk you will see the Newbiggin Power Station up ahead, the first suggestion of the North East's industrial heritage. The walk finishes at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre which provides information on the maritime history of the area. This is a walk of contrasts.

This section of the England Coast Path begins at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre and then follows the promenade to the Needles Eye. After this the path continues to hug the coast where care needs to be taken as there is erosion here. The walk ends at North Blyth, an industrial area which includes the dock and mouth of the River Blyth if you wish to explore further.

This section of the England Coast path takes in some amazing views of the Tyne from both the south and north banks. It begins at the historic Tynemouth Priory, follows the quays along North Shields, taking the ferry across to South Shields affording some great views back across the Tyne to Tynemouth Priory at the end of the walk.

This section starts in the busy seaside town of South Shields and winds along the cliff tops to Souter Lighthouse (National Trust). The section starts on the South Shields promenade and then follows a gravel footpath suitable for cycles, wheelchairs and pushchairs. This then turns to a narrower footpath at Marsden roundabout, however there is an alternative pavement along the road for those who need a flatter surface.The route then passes Marsden Grotto and final arrives at Souter Lighthouse.

This riverside section of the England Coast Path follows the mouth of the Wear from Roker to Hendon finishing at the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens in the city centre. The Wear was famous for its shipbuilding, all now long gone, but its religious past and glass making industry are still present. Alongside new developments the changing face of Sunderland is very evident in this walk.

This section starts along the cliff tops at Ryhope and then drops down to Ryhope Dene eventually arriving at Seaham Hall Beach. The section then continues along Seaham Promenade to the National Trust managed land at Noses Point. This walk gives a good contrast between the rugged cliff tops and traditional seaside town.

This section follows the Durham Heritage Coast path along the cliff tops from Seaham to Easington Colliery. This is a rural section passing Hawthorn Dene and Beacon Hill providing stunning views out to sea and finishing with a visit to the Pit Cage Monument at Easington Colliery.

This section of the England Coast Path continues down the rural areas of County Durham ending at Crimdon passing through Castle Eden Dene and Crimdon Dene finishing at a popular holiday park. There are nature reserves and rock formations to explore along with long sandy beaches and sand dunes. This section has some steep inclines and steps and is therefore not accessible.

This section of the England Coast Path begins at the popular holiday park at Crimdon and follows a more urban route to the historic Hartlepool Headland finishing at the old town walls.

This walk starts at the Clock Tower in Seaton Carew and follows a rural path around Seaton Snook. It follows the Hartlepool Borough Council suggested walk Seaton Snook Stroll, but if combined with other sections of the England Coast Path continue West at (5)

This section of the path winds its way through the industrial Teesmouth area which surprisingly is littered with marshes and nature reserves including RSPB Salthome. A relatively easy path, mostly paved and flat with opportunities to stop and view seals from the specially built hides.

This one way walk is part of the English Coast Path. It is an easy walk around River Blyth however does include a strech across fields and along the north bank of the River Blyth which can be muddy. The walk ends in Blyth where the walk can be extended to the beach rather than finishing on the Quayside.

This section of the English Coast Path begins at the Quayside which hosted the Tall Ships in 2016, then continues through Ridley Park to the beach with its colourful beach huts, and then follows the Eve Black Way through the dunes to Seaton Sluice.

This section of the England Coast Path is deliberately short so that a visit to Seaton Delaval Hall can be included as well as a visit to St Mary's Lighthouse (tides permitting). The route passes the villages of Seaton Sluice, Hartley and Old Hartley along cliff tops.

This section begins at Souter Lighthouse and follows the England Coast Path through Whitburn and Seaburn to Roker. The England Coast Path itself runs along the cliff tops and is a narrow footpath from Souter Lighthouse to South Bents where it joins the main public footpath. From there, the promenade can be followed to Roker. The end of this section overlaps with the Weardale Way allowing walkers who have arrived from Weardale to continue their walk.

This England Coast Path section starts in Sunderland City Centre and picks up the route in Hendon following a mostly urban route for the first half of the walk which then turns down to the cliff tops for the remainder of the walk to Ryhope. On this route you will see many new developments, including the A1018 which the route follows

This section of the England Coast Path/Durham Heritage Coast Path is another rural section which covers several denes creating an undulating walk along dirt footpaths.

This section of the England Coast Path is a varied section, starting on the historic headland, it then follows main roads through modern developments to the marina and on to the seafront at Seaton Carew. The route passes some of the highlights of Hartlepool which are well worth slight diversions.

This the 6th section begins at Seaburn Park before passing through Roker before finishing at St Peter's Church.

This short walk gives some wonderful views of Finchale Priory (English Heritage). It is especially nice in summer when the slow walk through the woods is cooling under the trees. This is one of my favourite places, an idyllic stretch of the River Wear.

This urban section of the England Coast Path follows the south bank of the Tees from the Newport Bridge to the Transporter Bridge and Clock Tower. This allows good views of both bridges and the northern bank of the Tees. The path is accessible although it runs through an industrial part of Middlesbrough. This section can easily be combined with a visit to Middlesbrough Town Centre.

This urban section runs through the heart of industrial Middlesbrough starting at the dock and ending at the Imperial Park Anaerobic Plant. The section is short and can be combined with other sections of the England Coast Path or a visit to Middlesbrough town centre.

This section of the England Coast Path passes through the industrial areas of Middlesbrough and Redcar. Much of the steelworks is being dismantled and there is not much to see on the walk itself. The route follows the last section of the Teesdale Way (follow these signs in the absence of any for England Coast Path until you reach Coatham Marsh). The reward at the end of this walk is Locke Park.

This rural section of the England Coast Path follows miles of sandy beaches and takes in the coastal towns of Redcar, Marske-by-the-Sea and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The majority of the walk is along sand dunes and the top of cliffs with the final stretch being along the promenade at Saltburn.

This section of the England Coast Path takes in marshes, dunes and a seaside promenade and can be enjoyed as part of a day trip to the beach. From the first section of the walk you will be able to see the remnants of the Steel Works beyond the golf course which is now being closed down.

This walk begins at Ushaw College and ends at Durham Cathedral and follows The Way of Light for most of the way. Exploration of Ushaw College and Durham City itself will complement this walk through fields, along cycle paths and through the city itself.

This walk starts in Durham City Centre, but takes a more unusual path around the city affording views of the castle and cathedral from several view points. The walk descends from the Market Place to the river bank and then passes the law courts and prison, Durham University, Durham School, then passes the listed buildings on South Street before returning to the start via the new Riverwalk Development.

A walk through the conservation area of Ashbrooke in Sunderland including many fine buildings, Mowbray Park, Backhouse Park and finishing at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

This short section of the Weardale Way winds through Biddick Woods and along both banks of the River Wear giving views of the Victoria Viaduct. It is gently downhill or level for most of the route and paved for most of the way making it a good walk after rain. There are a number of pubs along the river to while away a wet afternoon or enjoy a summer drink at the end of the walk.
