Girsby to Middleton One Row - Durham Round Trail

The 27th section of the walk is through open countryside and through woodland, crossing the River Tees midway through the walk and then following the river to Middleton One Row.

Description

Start at All Saints' Church, Girsby.

(S) From the small church car park, walk northeast for 50m then take the path to your left (west of Holly House) northwards straight across the field for 600m until you reach the treeline.

(1) Follow the path through the trees. When the path emerges at the other side, continue straight across the field in a northerly direction. When you reach the hedgeline, the path will turn northeast. Continue straight across the field to the next hedge, the path will turn north again. Continue to the farm track.

(2) Continue north through the farmyard and walk for 150m. The path then turns northeast, you will pass some trees on your left. After 60m the path turns north again. You should have a hedge on your left. Follow this hedge for a further 100m as you cross into the next field, the path will turn northeast. Walk straight across the field towards Hill House Farm.

(3) The path will continue north. Go through the gate and pass the farm on your right. Continue north heading towards Crosshill Wood.

(4) Continue north along the edge of Crosshill Wood. When you emerge from the trees continue straight ahead across the field following the farm track. You can spot the river on your left through the trees.

(5) Go through the gate into the garden behind a house called The Hollies. Continue following the path northeastwards passing The Hollies. Continue following the hedgerow on your right past Venton Cottage. You will now be on the driveway .

(6) At Goosepool House, turn right and walk along the driveway to the road. Turn left and follow the road around the bend, passing The Lodge and Bridge Cottage. Cross the bridge. Continue down Neasham Hill towards Low Dinsdale.

(7) At the church, turn right through the gate. Cross the field then the footbridge. Bear right at the end of the bridge crossing the field in a northwesterly direction heading for the corner of the trees. Cross the stile and enter the trees.

(8) At the fork in the path, keep right taking the path down towards the river. Continue to follow the path northwest through the trees. The river will be on your right. Cross the footbridge and continue north then northeast following the banks of the river.

(9) Continue past Dinsdale Spa on your left and onto the driveway. Continue down the driveway until you reach a small parking area.

(10) Turn right at the parking area to continue on the path along the banks of the River Tees. You will pass a pond on your left.

(11) Continue following the path until it splits into three seperate paths, keep left and walk up the grassy bank to the road. Turn right onto The Front and walk to The Devonport (E).

Practical information

Transport: There is no public transport to Girsby, you will need to take a taxi. Stagecoach bus 6 leaves from the Devonport Hotel back to Darlington.

Facilities: There are no facilities along the route, until Dinsdale. There is a tea room at Dindsdale Spa. * The Devonport Hotel at the end of the route does food and rooms.

Accessibility: This route takes in dirt paths across fields and can be muddy. It is not classed as accessible.

Accommodation: The Devonport Hotel at the end of the route or one of the many options in Darlington.
