Description

Start: Grey Horse Convenience Store, South Hetton. Parking is available in surrounding residential streets.

(S) With the convenience store on your right, walk northwest along Front Street for 400m, note the closed Station Hotel on your right and church ahead of you. Take the paved footpath to your left with the bungalows to your left. Continue walking in the same southerly direction along the back of the houses when the paved footpath turns left. After 500m the path will come to the corner of a field where it joins a path from the left.

(1) Bear right and walk southwest along the field boundary until you reach Salter's Lane.

(2) At the junction, turn left and then cross the road and take the single track road opposite. Be careful as this road is used by agricultural vehicles.

(3) After approximately 1 km the road will meet Green Lane, continue straight ahead until you reach the campsite on your left, take the right-hand path across the field or a little further on, take the track which curves to meet the path at the far side of the field. Continue northwest until you reach Low Haswell Farm.

(4) Turn left immediately after you enter the farmyard and cross the stile to take the track heading southwest. The track will end at a field boundary however the path will turn northwest towards the treeline, follow this path. As it enters the woods the path will turn southwest again after the stile.

(5) Bear right at the path junction and cross Coldwell Burn via the footbridge and then bear right. Follow the track along the edge of the woodland with the beck on your right until you reach the building. Bear left heading west continuing to walk alongside the treeline.

(6) When the path turns southwest look to your right for a footbridge, cross the bridge, go through the gate and take the steps. Bear right, the path will cross open land, first in a northwest direction, then turns west. The path will cross a track and then turn right by the Wesleyan Chapel, now a house to Cross Street. Turn right.

(7) At the end of Cross Street, turn right and walk north crossing the horse race-track with care. At the field boundary turn left and then bear right along the hedgeline until you reach a track.

Alternative Route: At the end of Cross Street, turn left and walk to the road. Turn right and walk along the road until you see a track to your right, follow this track until you reach (8). Alternatively, continue along the road until you reach (9)

(8) Turn right for 170m then take the left-hand path into the woods. Cross the footbridge over Coalford Beck and then bear left through the woods in a westerly direction. As you emerge from the woods the path turns southwest along a hedgeline. The path emerges at a crossroads with Pittington Village Hall on your right.

Alternative Route: Continue along Coalford Lane, walking through High Pittington and then bearing left at Low Pittington to reach the end of the walk.

(9) Cross the road into Hallgarth Lane. Take the path beside the house and school field on the opposite side of the road. There will be a playing field on the right. The path then continues along a field boundary before reaching Front Street. Turn left where you will find the Blacksmiths Arms (closed) (E).

To take the bus back to the start of the walk, take the 65 Prince Bishops towards Seaham from the stop round the corner from the Blacksmiths Arms to Station Road - Industrial Estate (Hetton Lyons) and then switching to the X1 X-lines towards South Hetton which stops outside the Grey Horse Store.

Facilities: There are no facilities on this route. There are public toilets just past the church on Front Street, South Hetton. You may be able to use the facilities at Pittington Village Hall if it is open.

Accessibility: There are steps and stiles on this route. There are also paths which cross open farm land so walking shoes are needed as the ground can be muddy after rain.
