Selset Reservoir to Balderhead Reservoir - Durham Round Trail

The 17th section of the Durham Round Trail walk begins to the north of Selset Reservoir, then continues across the Pennines following the Pennine Way towards Balsdersdale Reservoir. Views of the numerous reservoirs can be seen throughout the walk.

Description of the walk

Start: There is parking opposite the Carlbeck Centre on the B6276, (DL12 0NU). From here it is approximately 400m West along the B6276 to the start of the walk at Wythes Hill Farm entrance. Grid ref. NY 924 224

(S) Opposite the farm entrance you should see a gap/stile in the dry stone wall, cross the wall and follow the path heading South, look for signs for the Pennine Way, You will pass a derelict building on your left and then a second building. Cross the stile and continue following the dry stone wall to your right.

(1) Cross the beck by the footbridge and continue Southwards pass another building on your right. Look for the gap in the wall. Continue following the path across the field in South-Easterly direction. Cross another stile and head South towards the farm track. Follow this to Grassholme Farm. Walk through the Farmyard to Grassholme Lane.

(2) Turn left and follow the lane (East). Cross Grassholme Reservoir via the bridge. If the water level is low you may see the remains of an old bridge. At the far side, continue past the Grassholme Waterside Park. Go through the narrow gap in the wall.

(3) Still on Grassholme Lane look for a stile on your right after the gap. Cross the stile and follow the wall for approximately 100m before turning South. Cross the next wall and head to the farm buildings. Cross the stile by the farm onto Kelton Lane. To your left is a cattle grid. Turn right (South-West).

Alternative Route: Continue up Grassholme Lane to the crossroads and turn right onto Kelton Lane until you reach the cattle grid.

(4) Continue walking Westwards along Kelton Lane, passing two buildings. You should see the runoff from Selset reservoir in front of you. There will be a path to your right if you want to get a closer look. Afterwards return to Kelton Lane. Continue for 100m.

(5) Turn left (South) staying on Kelton lane South towards Lane Head. The road runs in a loop around the house. Keep left, go through the gate and turn left (East) following the farm track. After 450m the path turns South for 150m. Turn left and go through the gate. the track wiggles back and forth for 150m before reaching a junction.

(6) When the farm track turns north, look to your right for a path, you will now be back on the Pennine Way heading South-East, uphill across moorland which can be boggy. Ford Rokehole Sike and then continue to follow the dry stone wall to your left.

You will reach a gate, go through this continuing to walk South-South-East. Cross Blind Beck continuing South to the road. Cross the stile. Opposite you should see Hannah's Meadow to your left (E).

Transport: There is parking opposite the Carlbeck Centre. There is no public transport so you will need to arrange a taxi to get back to the start point.

Facilities: There are no facilities on this route.

Accessibility/Terrain: There are many stiles on this route and boggy wet ground so the route is not accessible to all.

Accommodation: The Rose and Crown is a good base in the pretty village of Romaldkirk.
