Cow Green Reservoir to Langdon Beck - Durham Round Trail

The 14th section of the walk begins at Cow Green Reservoir and passes the impressive Cauldron's Snout before joining the Teesdale Way for a while along the banks of the River Tees

Description of the walk

Start : Car park and picnic area at Cow Green Reservoir (DL12 0HX) Grid ref. NY 811 308

(S) From the car park and picnic area at Cow Green Reservoir follow the access road (South-East) towards Langdon Beck looking for a footpath on your right after 150m which will take you South-East until you reach the Old Mine Tramway track.

(1) Turn left and then at the track junction, turn right towards the dam (South). The reservoir will be on your right. Walk for 1.7 Km Southward.

(2) At the dam, continue South with the River Tees on your right for around 430 m.

(3) Stop and admire Cauldron's Snout then continue South then West following the Teesdale Way along the north bank of the River Tees.

(4) When you reach the island in the middle of the River Tees, Merrygill Holme, the path will turn North-East, continuing along the river bank.

(5) After 1.7 Km, the track will split towards Widdy Bank Farm at the bend in the river, keep to the right and follow the river bank in an Easterley direction.

(6) After 750m, the River Tees will bend away to the right, you should see the path straight ahead. Continue walking in a North-Easterly direction crossing South Loom Sike by the footbridge and then North Loom Sike. Head towards the farm in the distance.

(7) When you reach Sayer Hill Farm, turn right onto the road heading East. Cross Harwood Beck via the bridge. Continue to follow the road around to your left, then right and then left again until you reach the B6277, Langdon Beck YHA will be opposite (E).

Transport: There is parking at Cow Green Reservoir. You will need to take a taxi from the end point as there is no public transport. Hodgson's provide taxis around the Pennine Area

Facilities: There are no facilities on this route so you need to take everything with you. Toilets and food can be found at the High Force Hotel or in Middleton-in-Teesdale further along the road from Langdon Beck.

Accessibility: This section follows a mixture of paths and tracks including grass footpaths along the riverbank so is not classed as accessible.

Accommodation: There is a hotel in Langdon Beck as well as Langdon Beck YHA. There is also a hotel at High Force.
