Middleton One Row to Sadberge - Durham Round Trail

The 28th section of the walk takes in several villages before crossing open farmland before arriving in Sadberge. An alternative, more accessible route has been given which is equally as charming.

Description

Start at The Devonport (hotel). Facing the hotel, look to your right, there should be an alley between the second and third house.

(S) Take this path heading northeast which runs between a paddock on your left and gardens on your right. At the end of the paddock continue walking in the same direction for 100m across the field, then turn north towards the hedgerow. On reaching the hedgerow turn right.

(1) After 70m there will be a hedgerow running off to your right, go through the gate here and walk northeast towards the farm buildings. Turn right at the northern end of the first building and make your way through the farm onto the driveway. Follow this to the road.

(2) Cross the road bearing right, look for a footpath by the gate which runs alongside the treeline. Follow this in a northeasterly direction until you reach the gardens. Turn left, walking along the back of the gardens until you reach the Yarm Road.

(3) Cross it and take the footpath opposite. This will pass through a small car park and then continue along Alexandria Drive. Where the road bends to the left, continue straight ahead on the footpath. Cross the railway lines with care and then turn left following the path between the railway line on your left and the road on your right.

Alternative Accessible Route: Turn left onto Yarm Road and follow the road until it passes underneath the railway lines. At the roundabout turn right and follow the road around until you reach the path just near Oaktree Roundabout.

(4) The path will exit onto a roundabout at Oaktree Junction, turn right and cross the roundabout/A67. Follow Mill Lane, take care as there are no footpaths. After passing the house on your left, turn left along the wide track heading northwest walking through the farmyard. This track will bend right then left to continue on the northeast heading.

(5) You will reach a ditch where four fields meet, turn right (northeast) and follow the end of the field to the next field boundary. Turn left (northwest) and head towards the White House Farm. Follow the track northwest until you reach another road. Turn left (west) and continue until you reach Sadberge Road.

(6) Turn right and walk north along Sadberge Road which is very straight, following the path of an old Roman Road. You will pass Sadberge Hall on your left and then the boarding kennels on your right.

(7) Continue along the road passing under the A66 and into Sadberge itself. On reaching the crossroads, bear right, finishing at The Tuns public house (E).

Alternative Accessible Route: The route above includes crossing many fields with poorly defined footpaths and involves the crossing of the railway line. You could opt to walk through the pretty village of Middleton St George instead. From the Devonport, walk northwest along The Front and then turn right into Middleton Lane by the church. Follow this road north until you reach the Sainsbury's Store, continue walking north crossing the roundabout and continuing north on Sadberge Road until your reach (6). Please note there are no footpaths on Sadberge Road.

Practical information

Transport: There is plenty of parking in Darlington from where bus 6 (Stagecoach) runs Monday to Saturday, there is no service on Sunday. There is no public transport to Sadberge where a taxi will be needed to return to the start of the walk or to Darlington.

Facilities: Turning right for a short distance from (3) will bring you to the Oak Tree Inn for refreshments. There is also The Tuns in Sadberge at the end of the walk (both open daily from 12:00).

Terrain: This walk is a mixture of village walk and open fields and therefore an alternative has been given. To avoid crossing the railway lines between (3) and (4) an alternative has been given.

Accommodation: The Devonport at the beginning of the walk provides accommodation and there are lots of options in Darlington itself.

In the nearby area

This walk passes through some pretty villages and open countryside. There is nothing of note to do or see, but you will be passing close to Teesside Airport so keep an eye out for planes landing and taking off.
