Description of the walk

Start: Start at Rutherford Bridge (54.50487, -1.94772). Grid ref. NZ 034 121

(S/E) From the bridge, walk North along Rutherford Lane. At the top of the bank on your right you will see a gate and signs for Greta Walk. Climb the stile to your right and follow the sign across the fields for Greta Bridge. The path will cross the fields to the South-East crossing a stream. The River Greta will be on your right.

(1) Cross the second stream and continue to follow the path with the River on your right in a South-Easterly direction. The path will then turn East and then South-East again.

(2) As you pass through the field boundary, look to your right, you should see a building through the trees on the banks of the Greta. You will soon cross the access road to this property. Go straight across the road keeping the treeline to your right.

(3) The path will enter the trees by the river and then runs very close to the edge of the River Greta first North-East and then South-East. The path will then turn East again and pass the point where the Scargill flows into the Greta.

(4). Continue through the woods.

(5) Cross the stile and exit the woods, cross the field ignoring the track to your left. Cross another stile and enter Tebb Wood following the path north. Exit the woods again via another stile.

(6) To your right you will see the ruins of the old St Mary's Church. Continue across the stream and take the right-hand path continuing to follow the banks of the River Greta.

(7) At the path junction take the left path. This path follows the treeline northeast and then north. Cross one final stile to arrive in Greta Bridge to your right and the Morritt Arms Hotel to your left (E).
