Description of the walk

Start: Hartlepool Transport Interchange/Station (TS24 7ED) Grid ref. NZ 510 326

(S/E) From the west end of the station building, follow the footpath and take the steps left to Marina Gateway. At the top of the steps turn right and cross over the railway lines. Follow the road to Asda Roundabout and keeping to the right cross the roundabout heading North, then turn right into Maritime Avenue. At the junction cross to the car park and head towards the shared entrance of the 2 museums.

Accessible route: From the end of the station building follow the exit road into Church Square, turn right and follow the footpath to the traffic lights. Turn right again and you will reach the top of the steps from the car park.

(1) From the museums head West along the back of the buildings through the car park and then turn right continuing to follow the buildings. Continue straight ahead along Loverose Way to The Highlight and turn right. At the end of the buildings bear left and head North until you reach Harbour Walk. Turn right and walk along the edge of the marina. Turn right (South) into Navigation Point towards the harbour lock gates.

(2) Cross the lock gates and follow Slake Terrace. On reaching the Yacht Club, follow the footpath to your left around the front of the Yacht Club. If you wish you can walk along the jetty to enjoy the views of the harbour and Hartlepool Headland.

(3) Continue around the footpath until you reach the pier. If you wish for views of the harbour entrance, walk along the pier. There are several sets of steps should you wish to see the view south towards Seaton Carew, Teesside and the Cleveland Hills. Cross the roundabout and turn right (North-West) along Maritime Avenue. Cross the next roundabout continuing on Maritime Avenue.

(4) On reaching the Old Dock Offices with its clock tower and the adjacent Customs House, pause to look towards the museum where you will see the HMS Trincomalee, a tall masted ship, and the PS Wingfield Castle. Turn left and walk past the Old Dock Offices and the Customs House along Victoria Terrace. Cross the railway lines with care and turn right into Church Street.
