Description of the walk

Start: Spiller's Car Park (Ouseburn South), Hadrian’s Wall Path, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 1BU

(S/E) From the car park, turn left along Hadrian's Wall Path and cross the road to The Tyne Bar. Bear left around the pub (Maling Street) then take the path to your left under the bridge alongside Ouseburn. Look to your right to see the Ouseburn Graffiti Wall. Continue to follow the footpath (Riverside Walk) passing under the bridge at Byker Bank.

(1) On reaching Panhaggerty Bridge, you can choose to cross the bridge to visit the Ouseburn City Farm. After the visit follow the path on the west bank of Ouseburn under Byker Bridge. Alternatively, continue along the path on the east bank until you join Foundary Lane, turn right and follow the road underneath Byker Bridge. Walk underneath the railway bridge (Byker Viaduct) then take the left-hand path and walk underneath the second railway bridge (Ouseburn Viaduct).

(2) For a shorter walk, turn left to Stepney Road, otherwise to continue the walk turn right follow this path keeping to the left (unless you wish to explore City Park with its running track). Continue northwestwards along the edge of the park until you reach a path junction. Take the second path (westwards) exiting the park on Stoddard Street. Turn left. To your right you will see the NewBridge Project (an art space worth exploring if it is open). Continue down Stoddard Street until you reach Shieldfield Lane.

(3) Turn left into Shieldfield Lane. The Biscuit Factory, another art gallery, is to your right. At the end of the road, turn right into Stepney Road (2). Continue under the railway lines along Stepney Road. Northern Print, yet another art gallery worth a visit, is in front of you. Turn left along Stepney Bank and follow the road around bearing right at the Ship Inn into Lime Street passing Jim Edwards Studio Gallery and Stepney Bank Stables. Across the road is Seven Stories with book related events and exhibitions.

(4) Continue southwards down Lime Street until you reach Byker Bank Bridge, cross the road with care and continue into Ouse Street where you will find the Victoria Tunnels. Continue to the end of Ouse Street. Cross Walker Road and walk towards the William Coulson Monument.

(5) Walk down Horatio Street noting the building to your right, the Sailors Bethel. At the end of Horatio Street cross the road and walk between the apartment buildings to the River Tyne. Turn left and walk along the Hadrian's Wall Path until the path turns left. Follow this to Quayside then turn right crossing Ouseburn and returning to the car park (S/E).
