Castiglione walks

A challenging hike in the magnificent setting of the Popolasca Needles. It is, more or less, the only route that takes you into the heart of Popolasca.

A magical hike along the Scala di Santa Regina, in the heart of Corsica, on the D84 linking Ponte Castirla to Calacuccia. This is a fairly well-preserved transhumance trail featuring stone walls and numerous stone steps to help you navigate the few challenging sections of the route. The view over the Scala Santa Regina valley, where the Golo river winds its way through, is spectacular.

This walk follows the ancient transhumance trail that linked Aléria to Galéria. This path, which winds its way above the Fiume Golu (Golo), takes us in the footsteps of the goatherds who, moving from the mountain pastures to the coast, led their herds to graze far from the harsh winters of the peaks or the scorching heat of the plains. There are several ‘scala’ sections along the route, including the legendary climb from the pretty Accia Bridge, which spans the Ruda stream, before reaching Corscia.

Setting off from Corte, embark on a challenging adventure that will take you to the iconic and majestic Arcu di U Scandulaghju. This demanding hike, with its 1,060 metres of elevation gain, combines physical exertion with the discovery of an exceptional natural site.

The first part of this walk follows the Mare a Mare route, starting from Corte, near the Citadel. The path then, opened by the organisers of the “Périple de l’Arche” (Trail), climbs towards a small arch carved into a granite rock. This circular route ends by passing by the “Casetta” (little house). 

Starting from Corte, very close to the citadel, this legendary trail winds its way through the Tavignanu Valley. This hike, which is not particularly difficult but is best suited to experienced walkers, follows the old mule track that runs alongside the river and offers spectacular views of the wild gorges. It also forms part of the Mare a Mare Nord, one of the routes offered by the Corsican Regional Nature Park. Here you’ll discover unspoilt nature where the maquis is in full bloom and fragrant in spring, and where beautiful sculpted granite rocks delight climbing enthusiasts. At the footbridge, the river offers a peaceful spot, perfect for swimming in summer and ideal for a well-deserved picnic.

This circular route starts on the Mare a Mare Nord trail and allows you to return near the Tavignanu River. You will discover wonderful swimming spots, including Lake Antia, which offers a 40-metre swim, just a few metres off the trail.

First stage of the hike from Corte to the sea, at Marine de Porto. This first day is a steady climb up to the Refuge de A Sega.

This hike is a variation (in terms of the route and starting point) of the Mare à Mare Nord. We set off from Corte, a very pretty town, and arrived at the Gulf of Porto. We stopped at the Refuge de Sega, the Gite d'Albertacce, the Col de Vergio (where we stayed for two days to explore Lake Nino) and Evisa before arriving in Porto.

The Arche de Corte or Arche de Padule (referring to the sheepfolds located higher up) or Arcu di Scandulaghiu (in Corsican) is a granite sculpture located at an altitude of 1,500 metres, overlooking the Tavignano valley. The Arche is located between the citadel of Corte and the Calacuccia dam.

This circular will take you to the highest point in Corsica. It is a difficult hike, but it offers unrivalled views of the surrounding area.

The Tavignano Valley is one of Corsica's most beautiful mountain valleys. It offers a deep, rocky gorge with numerous pools, and above all, the valley is a hiker's kingdom. From Corte, only a well-preserved old mule track leads into the wild Tavignano Gorge. At the Passerelle di u Russulinu, you'll find pools in the torrent, guaranteed to cool you down in hot weather like this year (2017).

U chjassu di ZurmuluThis walk, which is shaded for the first part, takes you to Punta di Zurmulu from Corte.This small peak offers a panoramic view of the town, overlooking the citadel and the two valleys. On a clear day, you can even see the sea in the distance!The second section takes you to the Chjarasgiolu footbridge in the Restonica Valley.From this point, if you wish, you can then take the San Teofalu route (+ 2½ hours’ walk) to complete a circular route to the Chapel of Saint Anthony in Corte.

U chjassu di u fiume (The River Path) A trail in the lower Restonica Valley. This trail is ideal for a family walk. In summer, where the trail runs close to the river, you can combine the pleasure of the walk with a refreshing dip.

An accessible and refreshing hike in the heart of the Restonica Gorges. The trail, almost entirely shaded, immerses you in a magnificent setting: cliffs, forests and spectacular panoramas follow one another along the way. And to top off the experience, natural pools ideal for a refreshing swim await you.

A beautiful little circular walk from the outskirts of Castineta (well worth a visit!). Discover old hamlets and paths between Castineta and Morosaglia. These paths were widely used before the road to Castineta was built.

This third stage takes us to the Col de Vergio, the highest point of the day, which marks the start of the descent to Porto. We will pass by the beautiful Radule waterfall and its pools, which are perfect for swimming.

One can only admire the tremendous work of man carving a beautifully paved path along these narrow valleys to connect the villages or access the mills. Stone is everywhere, both on the trail and in the village of Mausoléo. The Tartagine invites you to swim or cool off. As for the bridges, what harmonious curves! An unmissable hike.

This walk is suitable for families. It is not particularly difficult and offers a bucolic stroll after visiting the villages. Much of the walk is shaded.

Ascending Monte Grosso via the Melaja Forest. A breathtaking view from the summit over the whole of Balagne, the Agriates and Cap Corse in the distance. A fairly difficult hike, but shorter than if you start from Calenzana.

U chjassu di u Finellu (The Finello Trail) A challenging hike that takes you along the ridges, following the watershed between the Restonica and the Tavignanu rivers, via Punta di u Finellu, to the summit overlooking the town of Corte known as Zurmulu. The route starts in the Restonica valley, at Tuani, and finishes in Corte.

The second stage of the “Circular Tour of Two Vallées” takes you into one of Corsica’s wildest and best-preserved valleys: the Tavignanu Valley. From the A Sega mountain hut, situated on the banks of the Tavignanu, the path follows the river and descends gradually through a dense forest where Laricifolius pines and holm oaks grow side by side. Along the way, you’ll enjoy numerous viewpoints over the steep-sided gorges and pools of crystal-clear water that dot the river. Halfway along the route, you can stop for a break at the Rossulinu Footbridge before continuing on the less steep but equally spectacular section of the trail, which will gently lead you towards Corte.

Second day of the hike between Corte and Porto. The trail begins by climbing up to Bocca Arinella, where we discover our destination: after Lake Calacuccia, the village of Albertacce.

Loop starting from the Genoese bridge at Albertacce, first following the Viru, a tributary of the Golo, to the Moulin de Muricciolu, then a pretty balcony path above the Golo to the footbridge over the Golo.

These sheepfolds, which are in very good condition, mark the end of a forest area. The group of sheepfolds forms a small hamlet of several well-restored huts. The surroundings are magnificent, with large rock formations and the Riviseccu stream. Shaded throughout, the route follows an old forest track that climbs gradually through a forest where beech trees are omnipresent, in contrast to the Laricio pine trees along the stream.

An interesting hike at the foot of San Parteo, offering superb views of the Giussani villages.

A unique hike in the Niolu region, featuring a little-known summit offering a sublime view of the Paglia Orba. Afterwards, you’ll have just one desire: to climb to the summit of this Corsican gem.

A beautiful mid-mountain route which, from the Col de Bigorno at an altitude of 885 m, takes walkers to the summit of Sant’Anghjulu at 1,389 m. On a clear day, the 360° panorama offers views of some of the highest peaks in Southern Corsica. Nearby, the Lento Refuge is situated on the western side of the I Compuli rocks. It is made available by the local council; the key is hung near the window to the right of the entrance. The only refuge in the Tenda range, this peaceful spot overlooks the Manghjatoghju valley, where animals gather around ‘pozzine’* fed by the numerous springs. A magnificent view opens up over the peaks of Asco and Cortenais. The return journey follows the same route, with the Nebbiu plain, the Gulf of Saint-Florent and Cap Corse to the north. This short hike is interesting for its various monuments: fountains, wash house, ruined castle, houses, church and even a beehive house. The path is shaded. The gentle slope makes for an easy heritage walk at the foot of the village of Speloncato, which is ideal for families.
