The transhumance trail of the ancient Scala di Santa Regina

A magical hike along the Scala di Santa Regina, in the heart of Corsica, on the D84 linking Ponte Castirla to Calacuccia. This is a fairly well-preserved transhumance trail featuring stone walls and numerous stone steps to help you navigate the few challenging sections of the route. The view over the Scala Santa Regina valley, where the Golo river winds its way through, is spectacular.

Description of the walk

You can start at Funtana Vignente. Please note, there are only two parking spaces by the fountain. Alternatively, 200 metres from the start, there is a small area where you can park two vehicles (depending on the route chosen). Please ensure you do not park too far onto the road, as this could cause a hindrance to passing traffic.

(S/E) Follow the road to the right, up to the fountain: a sign indicates: 1h30 – Corscia via the old Scala.

(1) Take the path which runs more or less parallel to the D84. Make a few wide bends, going up and down, until you reach a sign pointing to the hamlet of Costa.

(2) Turn right onto the path that winds upwards, following the cairns. Continue along the rocky path above the distant roar of the Ruda with its fantastic pools and reach Ponte Sottano, a marvel with its natural pools.

(3) Take a break to cool off: a magnificent spot. Then begin the descent through a forest full of scents: yellow marker. You’ll reach a memorial dedicated to the tracker pilot who died fighting a forest fire.

(4) Continue the descent, heading south, and reach the junction with the return path.

(5) Turn right to visit the hamlet of Costa. On leaving, follow the road to Saint-Sauveur Church.

(6) Retrace your steps slightly and head down the winding tarmac road to reach the town hall. Turn left, walk past the building and continue straight on along a dirt track. When you reach the buildings, leave this track on the left to follow a path that joins it further on. Continue until you reach the junction you passed earlier.

(5) Turn right, open the gate, walk alongside the electricity pylon and head down the path on the right to rejoin the Scala di Santa Regina transhumance trail.

(7) Turn left and follow this picturesque path, with a series of ascents and descents and a magnificent view over the Golo valley. A few oddly shaped boulders line the path and the noise of passing lorries and coaches carries up to this level. Reach the two-arched Pont di l'Accia, which rests on an imposing boulder: a wonderful spot for a swim.

(8) Continue straight on to rejoin the path you took on the way there.

(2) Head straight on to the fountain and the D84.

(1) Turn left and follow the road to the car park (S/E).

The starting point at Corscia is hard to find. The vegetation hides the entrance to the gate that needs opening and the passage under the post beneath the high-voltage power line

A superb and easy hike, very well signposted, enjoyed in glorious sunshine on 18 November 2024. It’s impossible to get lost.
It was very moving to walk this trail, which was created through the
of titans to create it.
The views are superb and you can continue on to the village of LOZZI. The return route via the upper part of the village of CORSCIA offers a different kind of vegetation with much more shade.
Thank you for this discovery.

A superb hike. The signposting is excellent from start to finish. The path is clean and well-maintained. It’s impossible to get lost. The people who maintain this path have done an extraordinary job of rebuilding, in the traditional way, the low walls that support the path. The views of the Scala di Santa Regina are magnificent; it’s a real feast for the eyes all along the way. A very pretty little Genoese bridge in the scrubland.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful place with us.

Good evening, Mr Laval,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
You say that the route is “very difficult to follow for the first few kilometres”, which surprises me.
If you follow the trail carefully, you won’t get lost.
The volunteers are doing a remarkable job of restoring our old trails.
I hope you took the time to contemplate and appreciate this place for what it truly is.
Kind regards,
