Kenzingen walks

A family-friendly walk near Kenzingen.Today, variety is the order of the day. This tour takes us through vineyards and woods, past ‘wild’ animals, all the way to a climbing park. So every member of the family can find their own adventure!

A lovely walk above Seelbach, alternating between woodland and meadows with beautiful scenery and the chance to discover lovely wooden sculptures. Please note that the start of the descent is sometimes quite steep.

A route through the Taubergiessen National Nature Reserve, in the German part of Rhinau, along the Old Rhine with views of Rhinau Island and a short detour to Europa-Park (Rust). This is a thousand-hectare nature reserve owned by the French commune of Rhinau on German territory (650 ha of forest and 350 ha of meadows or fields). I was lucky enough to spot roe deer, swans and herons.

A lovely, easy walk through the Grand Ried in Rhinau, taking you through fields and woodland near the Rhine, amongst springs and streams with exceptionally clear water, and past blockhouses.May be suitable for children.

A short, moderate-difficulty walk that takes you round the main peaks of the Kaisertuhl. This small mountain range offers a wealth of walking routes. This circular route starts from the wine-growing village of Oberbergen. The first section is an ascent to the Totenkopf. The views over the Rhine plain and the Vosges are magnificent. The route then follows a ridge, passing via the Eichelspitze to St Catherine’s Chapel, which is the highlight of the walk. There are plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside. The final section takes you through the vineyards.

An hour from Strasbourg, in the heart of the Black Forest (Germany), discover the ruins of Géroldseck Castle. A route along small country lanes, which can be completed on foot or by bike (between 4 and 5 hours on foot). After an initial uphill section, you’ll discover a superb 360-degree panoramic view of the Black Forest at the top of the ruins.

A visit to my maternal grandparents’ village will take you deep into the Black Forest; as you climb a little higher, you’ll discover the village of Seelbach in the Schutter Valley.

This is a hike offering a wide variety of landscapes, taking in hills, vineyards, woodland and the banks of the Rhine. A hillyfirst section on the Limberg heights gives way to a flat stretch through the Sasbach-Am-Kaiserstuhl Forest.

Pram-friendly family walk around Winden

This is an easy hike, best avoided in hot weather. The route passes through the many orchards around Sasbach, then the vineyards near Leiselheim and the giant chair (Stuhl) that marks a vineyard cru. The path mostly follows the yellow diamond markers.

A lovely walk with a short section through the forest. Most of the route takes you through terraced vineyards and meadows, with magnificent views of the Kaiserstuhl. Bonus: two restaurants along the route, one at the start (Zur Lilie) and the other at km 8 (Rathaus Lenzenberg), which is well worth a visit: lovely terrace and views over the plain, the Black Forest and the Vosges.

This nice circular walk mostly goes through woodlands and vineyards. Along the way, enjoy many views, including one at the top of a nice little tower. During the spring season, it's a nice spot for wild garlic.

Through remarkable beech forests, climb to the summit of the Kaiserstuhl to enjoy a splendid view of the Vosges and the Black Forest. Descend towards Lenzenberg, then through the vineyard to reach the remarkable Liliental arboretum.

Loop on the southern slope of the Kaiserstuhl towards Liliental and its majestic trees.Can be extended to go around Liliental or climb Totenkopf, the highest point of the Kaiserstuhl.The circuit alternates between vineyards, viewpoints, forest and Liliental pastures.

In Simonswald and its tranquil side valleys, where crystal-clear mountain streams murmur, six old mills clatter away. The mill trail connects the mills in a beautiful hike.

Explore a site home to the Ried d’Herbsheim Nature Reserve. It comprises the richest meadows in the area. In early spring, you can see patches of crocuses, as well as Siberian irises which flower from May to June. Conservation measures (in this agricultural area) have helped to avert the worst; the area features remarkable peat bogs typical of the Rieds.

A lovely hike in the Black Forest near Waldkirch, 30 km north-east of Freiburg (Freiburg im Breisgau) and 40 km north of Titisee.You can admire the countryside and woodland scenery from the top of the Kandel at an altitude of 1,241 metres, a popular spot for motorcyclists and paragliders.You’ll pass by a rockfall, Kandel Rock, where 2,000 m³ of rock collapsed in 1981.

Walk around Burkheim, a pretty village typical of the Kayserstuhl region. The route takes you past the Baggersee gravel pit, Sponeck Castle, through the vineyards and around the village.

Walk in the heart of the Kaiserstuhl. Small car park at the starting point. Walk with a few climbs through the vineyards, then after passing a pass, follow the ridge along a small forest before crossing it to come across a vineyard and its remarkable Mediterranean garden. Tasting possible. Return to the car park passing under the palm trees!

A circular route with virtually no elevation gain, through the shaded forest on the German side of the Rhine. Part of the route follows a signposted path known as the “Schnakenpfad” (the snail trail), which is approximately 7.5 km long. It is located near Lac de Gravier to the west, between the villages of Ottenheim-Schwanau and Meißenheim. This path is aptly named, as the locals also call it “Schnoogepfad” (the Mosquito Trail), because in summer it is teeming with them. The route alternates between small lakes, streams, charming little wooden bridges, footpaths, tracks of varying widths, tarmac roads and a few pavements at the start and finish in the streets of the village of Ottenheim-Schwanau. The whole route is easily accessible. There are several shelters with tables and benches along the way. Suitable walking shoes are nevertheless recommended. Dogs must be kept on a lead! The area is rich in wildlife and you’ll also come across beautiful wild geese.

A pleasant walk through the terraced vineyards between Ihringen and Ackharren in the Kaiserstuhl, offering superb panoramic views of the Vosges and the Black Forest.

Your tour starts at Freiburg Cathedral. Freiburg im Breisgau is known for its old town, the impressive cathedral and its proximity to the Black Forest. A particular highlight is the Schlossberg, a wooded hill rising behind the old town. From there, you can enjoy a wonderful view over Freiburg and the Rhine Valley. The Schlossberg is a popular destination with various hiking trails and the historic remains of an old 17th-century fortress.

Freiburg im Breisgau, a university town in south-west Germany, is known for its mild climate and its historic old town. The town lies on the edge of the Black Forest and, with its narrow streets, the typical ‘Bächle’ water channels and the Gothic cathedral, offers a blend of tradition and modernity. A particular highlight is the nearby Schauinsland, which rises to a height of 1,284 metres.

This is a hike in the Ried region, consisting of two circular routes in one. The Lutter Route (Green Ring) and the Ill Route (Blue Ring). You can do both circular routes or just one of them. It is fairly easy as there are no steep slopes. The route starts at the Benfeld lake and then crosses forests and fields, following the Lutter, Muhlbach and Ill rivers along forest paths and trails (very little tarmac).

A walk around Sankt Peter to discover stunning scenery as you cross vast meadows and follow cliff-top paths offering remarkable views of the Feldberg massif.
