Totenkopf, Eichelspitze and St Catherine’s Chapel from Oberbergen

Park in the car park on Heinrich-Klingstraße.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the path on the left before turning right at the junction. Then continue straight on until the first crossroads, just past the ‘radar kontrolle’ sign.

Turn left onto the path that climbs through the vineyards. Ignore a path on the right. Then take a left-hand bend and you’ll come to a junction.

(1) Keep to the right. At the junction with a track on the left, continue uphill to the right, still on a small road. You’ll then reach the end of this road.

(2) Carry on along the path on the left until you reach a Y-junction.

(3) Ignore a path branching off to the left and carry on straight ahead along the dirt track. Keep going straight until you reach the next Fork in the road.

(4) Stay on the path straight ahead, which gradually enters the forest, and ignore two paths on the right. You’ll come to a building.

(5) Walk past the building and take the path on the left, which offers views of the Totenkopf and its mast. Ignore a path on the right, then another junction, and head into the woods. You’ll reach a large crossroads.

(6) Head almost straight ahead, then, at the next Fork in the road, continue uphill, keeping slightly to the left. Climb up to the path.

(7) Take this path to the left. Follow a few hairpin bends until you reach a junction on a ridge. Turn right. Walk up a small road for a few metres before taking the first path on the left. Continue to the next junction, situated near the summit of the Kaiserstuhlh. Then keep left towards the Neulindenturm.

(8) Continue along the path leading downhill, opposite. At the junction with a path on the right, keep left; then, at the next Fork in the road, keep right before reaching another junction.

(9) Keep to the left until you reach a large crossroads, with a bench and a piece of art.

(10) First turn right then left. Walk alongside the vineyards, passing a gate on the left, then a grassy path on the right and another path coming from that direction. You will then reach a gazebo.

(11) Head towards the road and cross it. Immediately afterwards, turn left and walk along the road. Ignore the two paths on the right and carry on straight ahead. At the junction with a footpath, continue uphill opposite. Pass a junction on the right and reach a second one.

(12) Take the path which climbs steeply up to the Eichelspitze.

(13) Turn sharply right onto a path leading downhill. After a few metres, keep to the left and continue through the woodland. At the junction, head down to the right, then keep to the right again before turning left until you reach the edge of the woodland.

(14) Turn right towards the Sainte-Catherine Chapel. The path is open, offering views of the surrounding area. Then ignore a path branching off to the left and enter the forest. Do the same at the next junction before ignoring a path leading down to the right. Join the road at Bahlinger Eck

(15) Continue straight ahead, leaving the car park on your right.

At the next fork in the road, carry on straight ahead, then keep left at the crossroads. You will then reach a large junction.

(16) Keep to the left, descend slightly, then continue to the right until you reach a fork.

(17) Head up to the right towards the chapel. Ignore a path on the right and then another on the left. At the junction, carry on straight ahead to reach the Chapel of Saint Catherine.

(18) Turn left, then right. At the cross, keep straight ahead along the edge of the forest and ignore a path coming from the right. After a stretch in the open, re-enter the forest and pass close to a cross to reach a fork in the path by a bench.

(19) Turn right before staying on the path on the left. As you approach the Staffelberg, turn left, then, at an abandoned track, turn right. Round the bend and leave the path on your right to reach a large crossroads.

(20) Head straight ahead and ignore the next track on the left, continuing to climb to the top of the hill. Keep to the right on two occasions. At the car park with a bench, head towards the road.

(21) Cross the road and take the path opposite. At the cross with a bench, turn left.

(22) At the junction in the forest, turn left twice, then do the same at the next junction. When you reach the road, keep to the right towards the Babgeigenhütte.

(23) Continue along the path to the right of the building before keeping left and arriving at the Mondhalde Geibensee.

(24) Head down the path on the left through the vineyards. Take the bend, then keep to the right twice. Then take another left-hand bend and you’ll reach a Fork in the road with another farm track.

(25) Keep left, then go straight on four times until you reach the end of the path.

(26) When you can no longer go straight ahead, keep to the left and then to the right. At the next junction, keep left until you reach a Fork in the road.

(27) Continue to the right before heading down the first path on the left towards Oberberbgen. At the junction, turn left onto Hirschtrabe. At the end, take the path straight ahead, ignore a road on the right and take the next one. At the junction, go up the path on the left. When you reach ‘Auf der Bühne’, turn right and then immediately left. Continue right onto Furtmatten. Follow the road to the end to reach the car park (S/E).
