Park in the Tourist Office car park and car-share, at 35 Rue du Rhin in Rhinau, heading towards the French-German border.
(S/E) Leave the car park and walk along Rue du Rhin in Rhinau heading east, then turn immediately left at the Tourist Office. You’ll find yourself in a square, facing a ‘gold’-coloured statue.
Go to the left of the statue onto the small path that crosses the educational farm (marked with a Red Ring).
Follow the path to the road at the entrance to the farm, located on Rue du Sergent Viala in Rhinau.
(1) At the junction, cross the road and turn right heading east. After about a hundred metres, turn onto the path on the left (Red Ring). Then follow this path to the next junction.
(2) At the crossroads, on your left, you’ll see the Étang Saint-Julien. Opposite is a path leading up onto a dyke, and to the right is the path leading to the Rhinau fitness trail. You can walk down to the pond and admire its magnificent colours, then retrace your steps back to the crossroads. Take the path opposite, which leads up onto the dyke heading north-east.
(3) You’ll reach a junction. Head down the path on the left and take the path below it heading north-east. You’ll pass the ‘Syrop Quelle’ spring. Continue along this path heading north-east until you reach the next junction. At the junction, turn left into the fields heading north-west until you reach a road.
(4) When you reach the crossroads, carry on straight ahead through the fields – even though this path isn’t marked on IGN maps – heading north-west until you reach the next crossroads. Turn left, cross the bridge, then immediately take the path on the right heading north-east until you reach the hunters’ lodge and the forest.
(5) At the hunting lodge, turn left into the fields and follow the edge of the forest for about a hundred metres (there is no path or signposting at this point) until you reach the ‘Neufeld’ spring (where the Red Ring markings resume) and the path. Take the path on the left heading east, then turn right after a few metres heading north until you reach the next junction. Turn left heading east. After a few metres, you’ll see a small track on the right leading into the forest.
(6) Take the small path leading to a secluded, unspoilt pond, hidden from view. Walk round the pond (you can dip your feet in during the summer – there’s a small beach), then retrace your steps back onto the path. Continue along the path heading west until you reach the next junction, then turn right heading north until you reach the entrance to the village of Daubensand.
(7) Follow the path and, after two houses, turn right (Red Ring) heading east towards the Daubensand Forest. Continue through the forest (there’s a blockhouse on your right), then cross the bridge over the ‘Brunnwasser’ stream. Carry on to the junction.
(8) At the crossroads, take the path that climbs up onto the embankment and carry on straight ahead without changing path, heading south for 2.5 km until you reach the junction. There are numerous blockhouses on the embankment.
(9) At the junction, turn left towards the south-east until you reach the bridge over the ‘Breitsand’ stream. Cross the bridge and rejoin the Rhinau fitness trail (Red Ring) until you reach the junction.
(2) Then rejoin the path you took at the start, heading south-west until you reach the junction with the road
(10) Cross the road and follow it south-west on your right until you reach the Plobsheim reservoir feed canal. On your left, you’ll see a flight of steps leading up to the Rhine embankment.
(11) Climb the steps and walk along the Rhine towards the south-west. (You should be able to see the Rhinau ferry, which carries vehicles across to Germany.) Walk to the ferry, then cross the road to your right at the junction. You are just a few steps away from the Tourist Office car park on Rue du Rhin in Rhinau (S/E).
