Ceresole Reale walks
The walk around Lake Serru
An easy walk around the artificial lake of Serru.
Rifugio Savoia - Eaux-Rousses
A balcony trail. Stage4 of the circular route in the Gran Paradiso National Park. Return to the Valsavarenche valley.
The Victor Emmanuel Refuge at the foot of Gran Paradiso
A visit to the Victor Emmanuel Refuge, which, like its neighbour the Chabod Refuge, can be considered the base camp for the summit of Gran Paradiso, located in the province of Aosta in northern Italy. A steep but short climb that ends between the refuge and Lake Moncorvé.
Borgnoz and Meyes circular mountain pasture loop
Facing the Grand Paradis, these two mountain pastures, now abandoned, offer a beautiful view of the glacier and the summit of this particularly popular mountain.
Carro Mountain Hut – L’Écot via Lac du Pys
Unmarked alternative route to descend from the Refuge du Carro via Lac du Pys.
Tour of Cima della Roley in the Aosta Valley
A truly magnificent mountain route. Ascent, crossing the Col du Grand Small Pass, then descent. A fairly classic circuit where you are likely to see animals such as chamois and marmots. This circuit can be done in either direction, but the direction indicated allows you to enjoy impressive views on arrival at the Col du Grand Small Pass.
Colle del Carro
The Refuge du Carro is already a lovely destination, but when you reach this first goal at the end of the morning and after seeing the panorama, there are various possibilities for a little extra treat. Why not the Col du Carro or Colle del Carro, as you can read on site?
The hundreds of cairns that dot the terrain are sure to catch your eye, as will the view of the Italian side.
Cirque des Évettes circular loop from L’Écot
A magnificent hike to the heart of the Cirque des Évettes. Starting from the hamlet of L’Écot, the route climbs alongside the Gorges de la Reculaz to reach the Cirque des Évettes.
Highlights: Reculaz Waterfall, Roman bridge, glacial lake, Évettes Glacier, Évettes Refuge and Col des Évettes.
The descent follows an easy path.
Grand Méan glacial lake
A hike in the Cirque des Évettes, with the Grand Méan glacial lake at the foot of the glacier of the same name in your sights. At an altitude of 2,876 metres, the lake and glacier offer a fantastic view of a well-hidden glacial cirque. A real treat!
Refuge des Evettes
A beautiful hike that leads to the foot of the Evettes glacier. The climb through the Gorges de la Reculaz allows you to make a loop and discover the Roman bridge.
Sources de l'Arc - Col des Pariottes - Refuge du Carro
Departure from L'Écot, a hamlet in Bonneval that is definitely worth visiting on your return from the hike. There is a magnificent chapel and many houses that have been renovated in recent years. It is the highest inhabited village in France, except in winter.
From Thumel to mountain hut Benevolo and back, Gran Paradiso National Park
A beautiful walk to the lovely Benevolo mountain hut on the edge of the Gran Paradiso National Park. Along flowing mountain streams and grazing cows and lots of flowers, even Edelweiss!!! Park your car in Thumel and take a relaxed walk back and forth.
From Thumel to Lago di Golettaz
This is a long and tiring hike ending at a fantastic lake with nothing but eternal snow and even a glacier surrounding it! I skipped the Rifugio Benevolo because I had already done it a few days earlier. This Rifugio is well worth the effort and can easily be integrated into this trek.
Roc de Bassagne
The Roc de Bassagne is a double peak on the border ridge, at the junction of the Vanoise and Grand Paradis National Parks. There are many ibex here, as the valley leading to the peak is very quiet compared to the nearby Prariond trail.
Refuge de la Marmotte - Eaux Rousses
A short day as the next day takes you into the Gran Paradiso National Park, where camping is prohibited; I had to cut the stage short, otherwise it would have had to be extended unreasonably. The Hostellerie du Gran Paradis is the only place to stay overnight. The food is great, but be warned: at weekends there are often Italians, French people, etc. out mountain biking.
Eaux Rousse - Cognes
A long day lies ahead with the climb to the Col de Lauzon (3,299m). This is the highest point of the TDG. The descent from the pass is pure delight. It is possible to run downhill for 3–4 km to the Vittorio Sella Refuge. It is a large refuge with plenty of people. The descent to Valnontey is also long, but there are plenty of cafés to rest in.
Eaux Rousses - Refuge Vittorio Sella
From Valsavaranche to Val de Cogne in the middle of a herd of chamois.
The Alpine Pasture and Lake Djouan
A walk through the hunting grounds of King Victor Emmanuel, who owned a very large building in Orvieille that is currently being refurbished. Passing through the mountain pastures that follow, the very pretty Lac de Djouan then comes into view.
The Ouille Noire from the Pont de l'Oulietta
Exceptional panorama at the summit of this 3,000 m peak. This route from the Pont de l'Oulietta adds 300 m of elevation gain compared to the start from the Col de l'Iseran but allows you to be alone in the world on 80% of the route.
Carro Refuge - Lacs Blanc and Noir
A balcony route with beautiful views of the glaciers, passing by the small Lac du Pys and then the Refuge du Carro. Don't miss the Lacs Noir and Blanc, where you can recharge your batteries before descending to the traditional hamlet of L'Écot and then Bonneval-sur-Arc.
A circular walk around the village of L’Écot via the left and right banks of the River Arc
A circular route that takes you to the village of L’Écot via the Sentier des Oiseaux (left bank) and back via the Sentier des Agneaux (right bank). The walk allows you to discover the abundant flora and offers magnificent views of the village of Bonneval-sur-Arc and the surrounding peaks. A visit to the village of L’Écot, with its traditional stone houses and small chapel, is an unmissable stop. This is probably one of the most beautiful walks in the area, and what’s more, it’s accessible to everyone.
From Rhêmes-Notre-Dame to Refigio de la Marmotte
A beautiful and fairly easy walk to a very nice Refigio. A large part is through the forest, so there is plenty of shade. After the Refigio, you can walk a little further to sit and relax at a small current (2). If you fancy a very short walk (due to bad weather, for example), turn left at (3) instead of going up. You walk along a very old irrigation canal (Rû).
Towards the Lower Vallonnet Glacier
One of my most beautiful snowshoe hikes in 20 years! At least, as far as the final destination is concerned. This route takes you into a majestic landscape where the Lower Vallonnet Glacier at an altitude of 2,400 m (with its cave and tunnel) and, higher up, the Upper Glacier and the Albaron massif (alt. 3,637 m), which seems to oversee it all, immerse you in a world where time stands still. But for this glacier, time is sadly running out! This route presents no difficulties, apart from the slope to climb from the Balme ski lift. There are no hazardous slopes. However, you must remain cautious at the entrance to the glacier’s vault, where stalactites or blocks of ice could break loose during a thaw.
Bruil - Eaux Rousses
Another valley trek, the aim of today is Valsavarenche.
Along the Gran Rû canal from Bruil, Rhêmes-Notre-Dame
A short, pleasant walk for when the weather is a bit unpredictable. A walk along an irrigation canal, also known as the Rû. We start in the quiet village of Bruil and make a loop back via Pessey and Rhêmes-Notre-Dame. We start with a decent climb, but after that, it is relaxed.
Rhêmes-Notre-Dame – Rifugio Benevolo
The Waterfalls Trail: thesecond stage of a circular route in the Gran Paradiso National Park.
Starting from Rhêmes-Notre-Dame, you reach Rifugio Benevolo, passing numerous impressive waterfalls along the way.
Circular route around the Pointes des Fours and Leyssières
A magnificent ridge traverse and a spectacular landscape throughout the crossing, with the Grande Casse and the Grande Motte on one side and the Charbonnel and the Albaron on the other. The icing on the cake is that you’ll be walking across no fewer than five peaks over 3,000 metres.
Please read the description carefully before setting out on this hike.
Pointe de la Met Col de Bézin Col et Pointe des Fours
A wild hike in the Vanoise, taking place entirely above 2,500m. As signposting is minimal
(two signs along the entire route, one of which is at the start), it is best to be well-prepared and equipped (map, compass, GPS, etc.).
Admittedly, there are cairns dotted along the route, but the only reliable indication they provide is that someone has been there before you.
Snowfields can persist quite late in the season, with some residual traces remaining in late September.
The Pointe des Fours from the Pont de la Neige
This is a pleasant hike where you can encounter chamois and marmots and enjoy breathtaking views of the main peaks of the Vanoise from the summit. On one side: Grande Motte, Grande Casse, Dôme de Chasseforêt, Dent Parachée, Méan Martin. On the other: Charbonnel, Albaron, Grande Chiamarella. In the background, Mont Blanc, of course.
Grand Ru from Rhemes-Notre-Dame
An easy walk at the bottom of the Rhêmes Valley, through larch and spruce forests and along the Grand Ru irrigation canal.
A short, slightly steeper detour takes you to the beautiful Vallon d’Entrelor and the Refuge Delle Marmotte.
On the way back, don’t miss the chance to admire the stunning Entrelor Waterfall and the lovely little Lake Pellaud.
From Bonneval to the Carro refuge
This first stage, starting from one of the most beautiful villages in France, is a gentle warm-up that culminates (for the more adventurous) at the Col du Carro (3,149 m), the border between France and Italy and a magnificent viewpoint in fine weather, offering views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
Tour of Les Rochettes and the Lenta valley from Bonneval-sur-Arc
Climb above the village of Bonneval-sur-Arc and the magnificent Haute Maurienne valley via high but never difficult trails, then descend along the Lenta river. This is the itinerary for a hike during which we will always have before our eyes the imprint of vanished glaciers and the dazzling whiteness of those that remain.
Refuge Vittorio Sella - Valnontey
Spectacular view over Gran Paradiso.
Refuge de l'Epée - Bruil
Fourth stage between Valgisenche and Val de Rheme.
Return trip to the Vittorio Sella Refuge from Valnontey
A fairly popular hike that takes you close to the foothills of Gran Paradiso. You might spot some ibex if you’re lucky!
Lac du Vuert
A two part hike. First up the Doire de Valgrisenche, a steady slope offering a leafy, green landscape. From the refuge, the landscape becomes essentially mineral and the slope steeper all the way to Vuert's small perched lake. Stunning high mountain surroundings.
Saint-Grat Lake and Refuge Adami
Nestled at the foot of Tête du Ruitor and its glaciers, within a beautiful setting, Saint-Grat Lake is the highlight of any hike in its own right. Through the final twists and turns before the lake, the slope is smooth and the route straightforward. The next climb much steeper, leading to Refuge Adami gives you a stunning view point.
Short circular nature loop in Bessans
Starting from La Goulaz in Bessans, just above the cross-country ski trails and at the foot of “Tièrce”, you can take a short circular route partly along the Chemin du Petit Bonheur. It follows the botanical trail, dotted with small signs giving the names of the flowers and their uses.
Avérole refuge - Cabane des Bergers via the Pas de la Mule
Loop via the Avérole refuge above the hamlet of the same name, then an excursion in the fairly wild Lombarde valley to the Pas de la Mule. From the Cabane des Bergers, the return via the balcony offers a beautiful view of the valley and the refuge.
