From Bonneval to the Carro refuge

This first stage, starting from one of the most beautiful villages in France, is a gentle warm-up that culminates (for the more adventurous) at the Col du Carro (3,149 m), the border between France and Italy and a magnificent viewpoint in fine weather, offering views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

Description of the walk

(S) From the shuttle bus stop, walk up the main street of Bonneval towards Tralenta. Pass the Tourist Office and continue until you have gone past the last chalet. Take the path that runs along the right bank of the Arc to reach the hamlet of L’Écot.
Cross L’Écot to the Sainte-Marguerite Chapel and head down to the large car park below.

(1) At the car park, keep left to join theGR® Tour de Pays de la Haute-Maurienne on the track that climbs up the Arc (signpost towards the Refuge du Carro).

(2) At the first junction, stay on theGR® and take the path on the left which climbs up through the mountain pastures (signpost to the Refuge du Carro). The path climbs quite steeply to a very beautiful waterfall.

(3) Continue up a fairly steep climb until you cross the Plan Sec stream, where the slope levels out. You’ll reach a crossroads at a place called Plan Sec.

(4) Turn right onto the balcony path to quickly reach the Carro refuge.

For the more adventurous, leave your rucksacks at the refuge to make the round trip to the Col du Carro.

(E) From the refuge, a sign indicates the start of the path, warning of the dangers of a high-mountain route. Don’t worry! Although unmarked (and not shown on the IGN base map but clearly marked on OSM), the climb to the Col du Carro remains a ‘classic’ hike; the high mountains lie beyond. Follow the cairns and the very well-marked path, passing first two small lakes, then a series of boulders and small slabs before reaching the pass.
Reach the Col du Carro and its superb collection of cairns.

(5) Follow the same route back to the refuge (E).

Scheduled for June 50 years ago, that was my garden – I dread to think what state the surrounding glaciers are in!!

A long but scenic route with a good path leading to the refuge, which is set in beautiful surroundings alongside Lac Blanc and Lac Noir. We decided to return via the Col des Pariotes, but it proved tricky to find the path leading to the pass as there were several tracks, some of which were false trails; the descent was much the same. Not recommended for those with knee problems. The final stretch of the route is good but very long.

A lovely walk in stunning surroundings
A ‘challenging’ hike, but not difficult for us
The location of the Caro refuge and its breathtaking lakes
We went at the end of June and met very few other hikers

Hello,
The circular hike does exist. To complete it, you need to make the ascent over two days and set off early in the morning from the Carro refuge, cross the Col des Pariotes and descend along a path that is often barely visible on the right bank of the Arc. You’ll rejoin the ascent route at La Tuilière.
If you’re heading up early in the season, make sure you bring crampons.

A magnificent hike where you pass through alpine pastures and rocky terrain, keeping your eyes fixed on the glaciers that create stunning waterfalls all along the route. No technical difficulties; I just found it a bit long towards the end – the break at the refuge was very welcome 😉. The only downside is the return journey along the same route... it feels very long, even though the marmots keep us company all the way 🐾😍.
We’ve heard about a circular route; that would be well worth exploring.
