Roc de Bassagne

The Roc de Bassagne is a double peak on the border ridge, at the junction of the Vanoise and Grand Paradis National Parks. There are many ibex here, as the valley leading to the peak is very quiet compared to the nearby Prariond trail.

Description of the walk

Access via Val d'Isère, car park at Pont Saint-Charles, on the road to Col de l'Iseran.

(S/E) Head east on the good Prariond trail that climbs up the grassy slopes. When it levels out before entering the Gorges du Malpasset, a trail branches off to the left.

(1) Take this path which climbs up the grassy slope, then winds along the right bank of the torrent before climbing a grassy ridge, still on the right bank. It then returns to the centre of the slope and climbs up to a pass at 2661 m.

This climb up the Pentes des Cavales, clearly visible from the start, is steep, particularly in the last section, but effectively covers 600 m of elevation gain.

(2) From this point, the summit is visible, as is the gently sloping valley leading to it.
Take the well-marked path into the Tenn de Rhêmes. Avoid the chaotic areas that have fallen from the Pointe de Bazel by climbing slightly to the right before crossing a glacial umbilicus (an old filled lake).

The terrain then becomes gentler and purely rocky at the foot of the Pointes de Bazel and Calabre cliffs. The path disappears but cairns provide easy guidance to the glacial lake.

(3) Climb up the thalweg upstream of the lake as best you can, keeping your eyes peeled (the cairns become fewer and fewer) between a few sheep-backed rock bars (white on the left, dark on the right). You may have to cross a few feet of snow.

As you approach the final slopes, go around a rock barrier that is more continuous than the others on the left and cross upwards to the right on a platform above until you reach the foot of the centre of the summit ridge, passing the rocky outcrops visible above.

(4) Climb back up towards the ridge in an area of large scree where the slope appears least steep. To climb the south peak first, bear slightly to the right to reach the ridge, then follow it among large boulders to the summit, keeping to the west flank, which is not very exposed.

(5) From the southern summit, descend to the central part of the ridge and continue to the northern summit, first along the ridge line, then down the western slope.

(6) The descent is made by returning to the ridge and then diagonally across the western face (a few visible tracks).

(4) From the foot of the slope, return via the same route, first to the glacial lake, then to the Tenn de Rhêmes where you will find a path, and finally via the Pentes des Cavales, whose steepness makes for a challenging descent.

(1) Continue straight ahead to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The summit is double, with two peaks at the same altitude.

The climb up the Pentes des Cavales is tough, but the rest is more moderate until the final slope, which is steep and chaotic. Half of the route is off-trail.

At the start of the season, there may be significant snowfields, requiring ice axes and crampons if the snow is hard.

There is an alternative descent to Prariond from the lake, on the very steep slopes to the south-east: the route passes through several grassy terraces and is difficult to find, and the trail is not continuous. Good visibility is required.

Worth a visit

There are usually lots of ibexes along the way. Edelweiss on the Pentes des Cavales.

The view from the two summits is extensive, over the French, Swiss and especially Italian Alps, particularly the Grand Paradis, the Vanoise and the Grées Alps.
Grande Sassière, Tsanteleina, Pointe de la Galise and Grande Aiguille Rousse are all nearby

Personally, I find the end very dangerous for hiking, even though I have 30 years of mountain hiking experience. Now, I agree, there are always more dangerous things, but more than the difficulty, the last few metres with no apparent path and very unstable rocks were not my best memories. On the other hand, I must admit that the view from the top is fabulous.

Dangerous? It's like anywhere in areas with large boulders, you have to test the ground a little before landing on it, but I think it's more tedious than dangerous. There are no exposed passages.
Of course, the concept of danger is largely subjective.

A magnificent but very dangerous hike. There is no accessible path to the rock and the various rocks are very unstable. We did not take the path suggested by Visiorando for the last 100 metres of elevation gain and chose a slightly more accessible route. At the summit, the view is sublime but access is really very dangerous. There are many ibexes on the path.

I did this route today. I managed it thanks to your detailed description and especially the photo of the rocks to go around on the left. The view from the summit is extraordinary: a high mountain atmosphere with numerous glaciers and a distant view of the Grand Paradiso and the Italian-Swiss peaks (Monte Rosa). It's worth doing both summits (Bassagne south then north), as from the northern peak you get an extraordinary view of Tsanteleina and its glaciers. But it's still a bit of a slog to get there from the small lake at 2,900 metres: a long traverse of rocky chaos where you have to guess the best way through. There are a few cairns, but I lost the trail several times, especially on the way down.
I'm glad I was able to do this circuit, but at 65, I don't intend to do it again...
I didn't see a single chamois or ibex. Have they gone on holiday like the inhabitants of Val d'Isère?

beautiful hike but tough.
the slope of Les Cavales is not only steep but difficult. Don't bring anyone who isn't comfortable with loose rocks, steep slopes with no footholds and where you sometimes have to use your hands. I was fine, but my wife wasn't, and I shouldn't have brought her
We were rewarded with some friendly chamois that stayed close by for several hours despite my wife's presence while I climbed the rock.
there, it was me who was not too comfortable climbing the rocky chaos, some of which was unstable.
i limited myself to the southern tip
the ridge is impressive and the view beautiful, and I had never seen chamois so close before
so thank you for the route and the directions, without which I would not have made it

I did this hike after climbing the Col de la Lose the day before. I don't know if it was the combination of the two or the altitude, but the last few metres of the Roc de Bassagne were pretty tough. Once you've made the first big climb, the valley is fairly easy, but relatively long, with poorly marked paths. At the top, you need to be careful, as it's not always easy to find your bearings and avoid the large boulders. However, on the first climb, there are still edelweiss flowers and I also saw some delicate gentians. Chamois and ibex are also present. Once in the valley, you are alone with the mountain :-) . I met a couple on the way down, but otherwise there was not a soul in sight.
