Oreye walks

A walk passing through the villages of Oreye, Otrange and Lauw (in Flanders). Half of the walk follows the River Geer through a lush, relaxing green setting. The other half winds through the villages and takes you up a slight incline.

Starting from Sint-Pieters-Heurne, the walk takes you through the rather hilly countryside of Limburg Hesbaye, passing by a castle here, a chapel there, a limestone cave, an orchard, or a large square-shaped Hesbaye farmhouse.Although the region is criss-crossed by land consolidation tracks and concrete cycle paths, traffic is usually limited to a few farm vehicles, bicycles and occasionally a group or two of Vespa enthusiasts.That said, the route also follows numerous country lanes and forest tracks where you mainly come across only walkers or joggers.The numerous orchards (pear and apple trees) add a pleasant touch to the route when in bloom.

A short, peaceful walk in Borgloon, through the countryside and past fruit orchards. The walk follows land consolidation and country lanes used by a few farm vehicles and cyclists, with a brief detour past the Transparent Chapel and the Roman Villa landmark.

The route winds its way from village to village along narrow country lanes; large Hesbaye farms dot the landscape here and there, drawing the eye and inviting you to pause for a moment’s contemplation. And when the sun is shining, how can one resist the scenery that unfolds before our eyes? And for those who find inspiration in small villages, with their old houses sitting alongside newer homes – sometimes more harmoniously than others – this thirtieth stage has everything to make them happy.

A pleasant walk in the north-western part of the town of Tongeren, following old tree-lined railway tracks, crossing the Herkwinning Nature Reserve and taking in a few castles and fortified farms in a varied environment of copses, low-stem orchards, meadows and fields. Route proposed by the walking club "Les Pantouflards de Wihogne" (FFBMP, LG041).

Pear, apple and cherry trees, as well as vines, strawberry plants and currant bushes, ensure the wealth and reputation of this part of Limburg's Hesbaye region for its fruit production. There are orchards galore to admire in spring when they are in bloom and later in the season when they are producing fruit.

This walk takes you through a semi-natural forest and follows the Ruisseau des Awirs, an interesting habitat where kingfishers, a few pairs of white wagtails and trout can still be found. You’ll discover the Brouçou Valley, a wet valley with tall moisture-loving grasses, and walk along a sunken path lined with centuries-old trees linking the Alloue district to the hamlet of Saint-Georges. A sweeping panorama then unfolds, with Haultepenne Castle as a backdrop.

Pear, apple and cherry trees, a few vines and strawberry plants ensure the richness and reputation for fruit-growing of this part of the Limburg Hesbaye. Orchards galore to admire in spring during the blossom and later in the season for their fruit production.

A pleasant and easy walk through fields where traditional crops such as beetroot, wheat and winter barley alternate, sometimes interspersed with fields of potatoes, corn and even flax. The walk passes in front of the famous Lantin prison and Fort Lantin (one of the twelve forts built to defend Liège at the end of the 19th century) and returns to its starting point via the RAVeL (Réseau Autonome des Voies Lentes), built on the former Liers-Ans railway line.

This walk on the edge of Hesbaye takes us to the Geer Valley, passing through expanses of farmland, low-stem orchards and wooded strips, whilst offering fine views of the valley.

A walk that takes you along the Geer and into the Haut Geer nature reserve. Walkers will enjoy the scents of the earth, the sound of flowing water, the colourful palette of freshly blooming flowers, the ballet of pollinating insects, the melodious song of birds and the rustling of leaves swaying in the gentle breeze as they pass through the nature reserve.

On the edge of Hesbaye, vast fields still make up the bulk of the landscape. This walk, however, takes you along a few tree-lined paths and through wooded valleys, and also allows you to discover a typical (and listed) limestone meadow that has developed following the reclamation of a former quarry. A walk combining town and more natural areas.

Starting from the hamlet of Chokier, on the banks of the Meuse, this route – although close to the heavy industrial estates of the Meuse region – offers a pleasant walk through refreshing, peaceful countryside. It passes through the ‘Sous les Roches’ nature reserve and runs alongside the castles of Aigremont and Chokier.

The upper reaches of the Geer, between Lens-Saint-Servais and Hollogne-sur-Geer, are largely set in woodland along much of its course. This route also offers the chance to linger in the Haut-Geer nature reserve (the settling ponds of the former sugar factory) and discover its birdlife.

This walking route circles Sainte-Walburge, passing through several slag heaps. Starting at the Sainte-Barbe and Tonne slag heap, the route goes through Jean Lejeune Park and then past the Old and New Batterie slag heaps.

In the mysterious area of the numerous springs of the Geer, encounter the ghosts of the Lord of Herzée in the Chevées, the nuns in the former Carmelite convent, the prior of the convent in his farmhouse, and let yourself be seduced by the quiet charm of the two Lens.

A stone's throw from the heart of the city, this route takes walkers through meadows and woods, avoiding crowded neighbourhoods and streets, while offering breathtaking views of the city and the Meuse valley. It is not uncommon to come across a herd of sheep or cattle. The region's mining past is also evident. At the lowest point of the route, you will pass through the old quarter of Liège with its dead-end streets and stairways.

For many people, Seraing is an industrial city, but what they don't know is that one-third of the area is covered by forests. This hike takes you on a journey of discovery through these forests and the many streams that run through them (the Neuville, Vecquée, Chéra and Ville en Court streams), passing by some iconic sites such as the Mare aux Joncs, the Arboretum, the Trou d'Ausny and the Source du Père Antoine.

From the village of Fallais, the walk leads to the hamlet of Pitet, passing the small ‘Réserve de la Quiétude’ nature reserve and through the fields. The route continues through Les Falihottes, past its old mill and the former forge of the Pitet manor farm, and runs alongside its arbour. It then reaches the hamlet of Hosdent, known as the Village du Saule, before returning to Fallais via the RAVeL L127.

The walk follows the country lanes of the Liège Hesbaye region, passing through the villages of Fallais and Braives.Set against a generally gently undulating landscape, the circular path offers lovely views of the crops – which are sometimes a rich golden colour depending on the time of year – as well as solitary trees, rows of poplars, bushes and other grasses swaying in the wind along the paths.Egrets and herons are usually to be seen against a backdrop of wind turbines.

Circular provided by the SI. Walk alternating between ascents and descents, without any major difficulties. The last section of the Chemin des Crêtes is a steep descent.

The route has been designed to enable walkers of all ages to discover Thier-à-Liège in a fun way. The first part focuses on the Cité du Tribouillet, which was the subject of numerous architectural experiments in the 1920s and 1930s. The second part is also of architectural interest but offers a better glimpse of the more bucolic side of Thier-à-Liège.

This circular route starting from Fumal winds through the Burdinale-Mehaigne Nature Park, passing successively through the villages of Huccorgne and Marneffe, before returning to Fumal via the countryside around Fallais.

This route, slightly modified to allow for a start and finish at a station, was part of an organised walk that attracted several dozen walkers, all of whom left delighted. The route offers the chance to admire the beauty of the Condroz forests and landscapes, as well as that of the Fond d’Oxhe stream valley.

This is a somewhat challenging hike through the woods on either side of the Fond d'Ohxe valley in the Saint-Lambert National Forest.Starting from the ruins of the Church of Notre-Dame in Ombret, the circuit skirts the hamlet of Les Communes before climbing into the woods, then descending shortly afterwards into the Fond d'Ohxe and climbing back up the other side through the Bois des Dames and Bourgogne woods. The return journey is again through the woods, on the opposite side, offering some beautiful views of the Meuse valley at the end of the walk.

The Sint-Truiden region is renowned for its cherry (to a lesser extent), apple and pear orchards. The walk offers the chance to see them up close (very close). We particularly recommend it during the flowering season, usually in April. 

Between the gravel pit and the puddingstone, you’ll find the Meuse, the fishway, the lock and the new Ampsin footbridge, the Tihange power station, Neuville Castle, and the state-owned forests of Neuville-sous-Huy and Saint-Lambert.Take the time to walk around the gravel pit and enjoy its aquatic wildlife!It’s a lovely walk, even if the N90 on the other bank of the Meuse is a bit noisy.The extension of the N684 between Tihange and Strée has been under construction for over ten years. Make the most of the remaining months (before the end of 2026) for a quieter experience!

This beautiful hike takes you to the superb village of Villers-le-Temple, which was the seat of an important commandery of the Order of the Temple from the 13th century onwards (hence its name). It is a varied route, with no difficulty other than its length, combining small roads and little-used forest paths, passing through small villages and very quiet hamlets, offering some magnificent landscapes.

A varied walk from the heights of the commune of Ombret, leading to the banks of the Meuse, which you can cross via the new cycle and footbridge at the Ampsin-Neuville lock and its facilities, including the original fish ladder. The return journey takes you through the Neuville-sous-Huy and Saint-Lambert national forest.

A very beautiful walk on the outskirts of Liège, mainly through woods. It passes through the Streupas moor, joins the Ourthe and runs parallel to it as far as Colonster Castle, before returning through the Sart Tilman woods.

This long, almost entirely woodland circular route takes you on a journey to discover the natural beauty—often unexpected—located just south of the ‘fiery city’, not far from the industrial activity of the Meuse Valley. Whilst the aim of the walk is, as its title suggests, the viewpoint at La Roche aux Faucons overlooking the Ourthe Valley and the town of Esneux, the route also takes you through some beautiful woodlands such as the Bois de Plainevaux, the Bois de Nomont-Famelette, the undivided state-owned forest of La Vecquée and its arboretum, where the sequoia alone is worth the detour.The curious Source du Père Antoine will surprise many on the way back.Do stop off along the way to admire the Château de Plainevaux.

The feudal castle of Moha is one of the region's jewels. It is located at the top of a rocky spur on the heights of the Mehaigne, on the edge of the limestone quarries (both old and still in operation), and was apparently built in several phases between the 11th and 14th centuries. Archaeological excavations have revealed a much older presence.

A very pleasant walk entirely through the forest. The numerous circular loops on this route make it easy to shorten the walk. The descent to the car park follows a lovely little stream that flows into the Ruisseau d'Oxhe

This lovely circular walk starts from the Adeps centre in Sart Tilman and passes by Colonster Castle. This hike takes place mainly in the woods on small paths that are impassable with a pushchair.

Country walk starting from the provincial estate "Het Vinne".Ponds, rivers, orchards, pastures and crops for the hiker's enjoyment!There are a few observation points at the edge of the pond. 

Loop through the woods of Sart-Timan, starting in Boncelles. It crosses the Sart-Tilman Golf Course and the university grounds.

From Moha Castle to Fallais Castle, there is a beautiful route to cycle (hybrid bike) via the Ravel 127 and the Balade de la Pierre, which winds along the Mehaigne.

Farmland and manorial estates – that’s what’s on offer. Numerous castles and manor houses await you – sometimes clearly visible, sometimes nearby, sometimes well hidden, sometimes slightly off the route – each with its own story!In order: Lamalle, Laminne, Blanc, Envoz, Temple and Moha, whilst Potesta and Fosseroule lie just off the route.

This is a lovely route starting from Rotheux, very pleasant and without any notable difficulties, which will take you along the woods and meadows of Bonsgnée, up to Berleur and back to the starting point through pleasant countryside with some lovely views of both sides of the valley. You may even spot some of the local wildlife, including Highland cattle, geese, horses and other inhabitants of the region.

There is a legend written by Mr Daniel Van Alken, published in the 100th issue of Cahiers de Jadis and edited by the non-profit organisation Mémoire de Neupré, which tells the story of a lone wolf. This legend is set in Plainevaux. On this walk, you will discover the places where the wolf is said to have passed. Look for its footprints or tracks! If you don’t find the wolf’s, you’ll discover plenty of others… wild boars, roe deer, badgers. Don’t forget to look up to discover some magnificent scenery!

This hike follows part of an old Vita trail in the Bois de Tihange, which is fairly quiet. You will walk alongside two streams: the Rau de Chéra and the Rau de Bonne Espérance. The road to the car park is very quiet.

90% of the walk is on forest paths, partly following the Bois de Tihange walk.

Winding its way from one bend in the Ourthe to the next, this walk takes in four viewpoints over the valley and the towpath, passing through the village of Méry, Brialmont Abbey and the elegant two-level bridge at Tilff.

Starting from the well-known long-distance hiking trail (signposted route to Santiago de Compostela), this route revisits the wonderful site of the circular Ourthe, passing by the old water pump towards the village of Ham. The idea behind this route is to limit the "concrete" sections to what is strictly necessary.

Entirely on the right bank of the Ourthe, this hike will take you to the hamlets of Méry, Hautgné, Hayen and Cortil on the heights of Tilff, as well as the vast Bois des Manants forest, both on the way there and on the way back.

A leisurely walk towards the Mehaigne valley, starting from the village of Longpré. The route leads to the village of Huccorgne through the fields, before following the Mehaigne river to Moha and its feudal castle. Along this route, the landscape is shaped by limestone quarries, parts of which have been converted into nature reserves.

A gentle walk starting from the Ferrières mill. It crosses the Bois de Ferrières, passes by the Château le Temple farm and returns via Le Sokeu to the Bois de Ferrières and the mill.

Land of the Meuse, land of farms, land of stone, land of (rail)ways, land of castles. The hike takes you through countryside and forests, starting from the Château à l'Horloge in Bas-Oha (SNCB station nearby).

A magnificent walk with superb views. I recommend it in late autumn or early spring when there are no leaves on the trees so you can fully enjoy the scenery. Do not attempt this walk when it is raining, when there is snow, or when the Ourthe is in flood.

Not far from Huy, discover a steep-sided valley with lush vegetation, caves and rock shelters, as well as the Lovegnée-Bosquet nature reserve.

A lovely walk for those who enjoy nature and peace and quiet. Starting from the Esneux bridge, this route begins with an uphill walk through a small wood, then continues downhill towards the pretty little hamlets of Ham and Lhonneux. You then follow the circular route of the Ourthe via the Ravel, with views of La Roche-aux-Faucons. Return via the Athénée area to the Esneux bridge.

This walk allows you to discover one of the most beautiful circular loops of the Ourthe, starting from the small town of Esneux. The highlight is the panoramic view that greets walkers from the Roche aux Faucons.

A very strenuous walk along the heights on either side of the Ourthe Valley, starting from Esneux. The route heads to the small village of Fontin via a steep path, before descending to the hamlet of Méry. It then climbs towards the village of Frêchereux, cutting across the circular bend in the river, before finally following the river and returning to the starting point via the hills.
