Description of the walk

Car park opposite No. 2 Rue de la Vieille Cense in Fumal.

(S/E) From the car park, head due east along Rue de la Vieille Cense.

(1) Walk past the church and visit the castle, then return to Rue de la Vieille Cense and continue to the left. At the end of the street, turn right to join the main road. Cross the road and take a left/right turn so that, after the stream, you can join the grassy path running alongside it.

(2) Immediately after a small bridge over a stream, turn left to reach Rue Sous Chaumont after 100 metres, then head up to the right. At the crossroads, take the Thier Moson, which starts to the right of the small chapel. At the end of the street, in the middle of the fields, follow the road to the right towards the Mozon farm.

(3) It is no longer possible to pass between the farm buildings, so continue by taking the bypass on the left and head straight into the woods (at this point, in spring, there are large patches of wild garlic). The path narrows and winds its way down through the woods. On leaving the woods, continue along a stony track.

(4) At the lowest point, walk alongside the ponds before heading back up to join a circular section of tarmac road. Head straight down to reach the village of Huccorgne via the A-road.

(5) Head towards the church and go round it to the right via Rue des Petites Trixhes. After a steep slope, this leads into Rue Chénia, which you follow to the right. The street descends gradually (central gutter) and continues as a somewhat rutted path which you follow.

(6) Just before reaching the bottom of the slope, take the path on the left overlooking the Burdinale and follow it to the next bridge (Rue du Sart). Cross the stream and join the main road. Follow this to the left for about twenty metres.

(7) Turn right onto the tarmac path just after No. 93 and head up towards the village of Marneffe. At the top, continue straight on along Rue du Cimetière, then Rue Lambert Daxhelet.

(8) Immediately after the school, turn left into Ruelle Collon. This leads onto a footpath which, shortly afterwards, bends to the right. At the end of the path, turn left to reach Rue du Buck.
Once on the street, first turn right then left and start the climb. The street bends to the right and, 200 m further on, joins another street. Turn left here towards the new cemetery and the fields.

(9) After the cemetery, continue straight on along the farm track and turn right at the first junction, about 500 m further on. The dirt track leads to a tarmac road. Turn right for a very short round trip to the Petite Chapelle Sainte-Barbe.

(10) From the chapel, return to the crossroads and continue to the right. Go straight on at the first junction (about 500 m after the tarmac).

(11) 700 m further on, the farm track bends sharply to the right. Ignore the track on the left in the bend; shortly afterwards, you’ll come to a road. Cross over and follow the small tarmac road straight ahead.

(12) After about a hundred metres, this road turns sharply left. Take the grassy path slightly to the left (the middle branch at the crossroads). The dirt track gradually winds its way between two wooded ditches, then becomes roughly paved.

(13) At the four-way junction, turn right and head towards the village of Fumal (beautiful view of the castle and the church). The farm track continues as a street past the first houses and then joins a road; keep left. At the three-way junction ahead, go straight down the one-way street and, at the end of the street, turn left into Rue de Marneffe towards the car park on Rue de la Vieille Cense (S/E).

Note: Notification from the Burdinne municipal administration regarding the path between WP 6 and 7:
"In October 2022, the Municipal Council noted the creation, through public use, of a public right of way on the so-called 'vicinal' path along the Burdinale (cadastral parcels 5th division, section A, numbers 816/2, 752 B and 816 C), connecting Rue du Sart (Marneffe) to Route de l’Etat (Huccorgne).
On appeal, the Justice of the Peace upheld the municipality’s decision and the judgement is now final. In conclusion, the right of way is therefore fully recognised and the owner cannot refuse access to this route."

A very pleasant walk through varied countryside. The path is quite muddy in places (which is to be expected given the recent heavy rainfall), so make sure you wear suitable footwear. I recommend using the Visorando app, which helps you get back on track if you stray a little from the route. The app proved very useful in this instance.

A lovely walk from the start to point 9, and a lovely walk from point 9 to the finish.
I wasn’t expecting such a lovely walk in this area.

A lovely, varied route, alternating between paths, fields and narrow village roads.
