The Awirs Valley and its streams

This walk takes you through a semi-natural forest and follows the Ruisseau des Awirs, an interesting habitat where kingfishers, a few pairs of white wagtails and trout can still be found. You’ll discover the Brouçou Valley, a wet valley with tall moisture-loving grasses, and walk along a sunken path lined with centuries-old trees linking the Alloue district to the hamlet of Saint-Georges. A sweeping panorama then unfolds, with Haultepenne Castle as a backdrop.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Rue Louis Mestrez, Saint-Lambert Church (La Gleixhe). The church is open to the public at weekends. We invite you to explore it.
Follow the blue signposts marked with the number 1.

(S/E) To begin, take the path to the left of the church. As you follow this path, look out for the south face of the tower and its sundial made of tufeau (a type of chalky limestone) on your right. On your left, you can take a path that offers a view of Nyst Mill. Then return to the main path and walk alongside the leat. Further on, you will see Saint-Guy Chapel on your right

(1). Continue along the path. On your left is Bouhet Mill. Cross the Ruisseau des Awirs and you’ll come out onto the street of the same name. Turn right, walk on until you reach the stream, then cross it and take the uphill path that starts on the left just before you reach it. It leads to some fields which you cross before returning to a wooded path running alongside a meadow and a field. At the end of this path, you’ll reach Rue Loneux . You can enjoy a magnificent view and catch a glimpse of Hautepenne Castle in the distance.

(2) Turn left and head towards the castle. At the next junction, carry on straight ahead and then turn left to head downhill. At the end of the descent, follow the narrow path back up to Rue de Warfusée.

(3) Cross the street to take Rue Broussoux, which is almost directly opposite you. Carry on. Then take the path on your left, just before Rue des Peupliers.

(4) At the bottom of the path, turn left. Follow this old country lane until you reach Rue de Warfusée.

(5) Turn right to go down this street. A few metres before Rue des Awirs, cross the road to take the path between the houses on your left. At the end of the path, turn right towards Rue des Awirs.

(6) Cross the street, then turn left and then right towards Saint-Lambert’s Church. On your right, behind the hedge, you can see the ponds of the Haultepenne estate and the small island on which the original church of La Gleixhe was built. Carry on straight ahead to return to the starting point (S/E).

This walk has a bit of everything – fields, woods and villages – but it’s certainly very slippery if it rains

An easy, varied walk, but the big disappointment is the rubbish littering the sides of the paths

A lovely walk. Best done in dry weather, as the paths through the woods can be muddy and slippery.

It’s a really lovely walk that we enjoyed, and it’s suitable for those who aren’t keen walkers or for children. There’s a bit of walking along the roads, but it’s nothing too strenuous; we spent most of the time in the woods. The start and finish point is a chapel that’s open on Sundays and public holidays. It’s a very pleasant circular walk, but some sections can be slippery or waterlogged after or during rain.
