Meyrueis walks

From the arid plateau of the Causses to the foothills of Puech Pounchut, this walk takes you on a journey of discovery through the upper Jonte valley and its contrasts. A very scenic trail; climb towards Pauparelle to discover the interlocking roofs of Meyrueis, nestled at the foot of the rock, leading to the Jonte gorges bordered by the Causse Méjean and the Aigoual massif: a journey between the Causses and the Cévennes.

Exclusively on marked trails, this tour offers a comprehensive overview of the Causse: wooded or barren sections, ascents and descents through the Gorges de la Jonte, a walk along the Gorges du Tarn, beautiful villages, a famous karstic cave (Aven Armand), ancient remains (dolmens, menhirs), vultures – nothing is missing. The stages are generally easy, allowing you to focus on the beauty of the landscapes you pass through. Planned as a six-day tour, it can be completed in five days by combining the last two stages.

Thisfirst stage of the Tour du Causse Méjean takes the hiker up onto the Causse from Meyrueis on the banks of the Jonte. A gentle climb to get you going, featuring a picturesque stretch before reaching the Causse, the Aven Armand, and a renowned cheese dairy at the entrance to the pretty hamlet of Hyelzas. If you arrive early enough, you may be able to visit the Ferme Caussenarde in Hyelzas.

A short walk of a good two hours starting from the swimming pool car park. Pass by Roquedols Castle then the Col de Tribe before returning to Meyrueis.

This walk is located on the north side of the Aigoual massif in the Cevennes. At the summit of the hike you will have a beautiful view of the Causse Mejean and the Valley of Jonte. On a clear day looking west you can see the Millau viaduct.

This trail was created by the Cévennes Gorges du Tarn Causses Tourist Office and is traditionally started from the Dargilan cave car park, through the forest leading to Sérigas and back via the D47C road. This is a variation that takes theGR® 62A westwards from the D47C before the hamlet of Luc and returns to the Croix des 3 évêques crossroads. This adds a 2km circular to the original route and avoids walking on the tarmac of the D47C.

Despite its uninviting name, this is a superb hike under the forest canopy. The name comes from the fact that there was once no cemetery in Camprieu, forcing the inhabitants to carry their dead to the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur.

Starting from the charming hamlet of Drigas, this short hike offers a condensed version of the Causse Méjean with the discovery of a dolmen, a lavogne, a karstic cave, a beautiful stone cross and two typical hamlets with remarkable architecture. All this in an open landscape, with wide open spaces interspersed with wooded areas where pine trees reign supreme. An ideal half-day break to recharge your batteries in the great silence of the causse.

This6th and final stage of the Tour du Causse Méjean crosses the desert-like expanses of the Causse before descending into the Gorges de la Jonte to Meyrueis. This short, easy stage can be combined with the5th stage from Mas-Saint-Chely to Drigas for those wishing to shorten the Tour to five days.

An easy hike on the Causse Méjean, passing through three hamlets. You can visit a protohistoric enclosure at the highest point of the hike and see the karstic cave near the hamlet of Hure.

Starting from the hamlet of L'Hom, this hike first takes you to discover the endless spaces of the southern part of the Causse Méjean. Endless grassy and rocky hills, interspersed with cultivated plots and coniferous woods, allow you to take in the immensity of the landscape. It concludes with a visit to the discovery trail of the chaos of Nîmes le Vieux, bristling with hundreds of strangely shaped rocks sculpted by erosion. Informative panels are strategically placed along the trail to complement the experience. A beautiful day, punctuated by visits to the Causse hamlets of L'Hom, Le Veygalier and Villeuneuve, with their remarkable architecture.

Thissecond stage of the Tour du Causse Méjean crosses the lush south-western part of the Causse before descending to Le Rozier, at the confluence of the Tarn and the Jonte. Along the way, the beautiful church of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers, the Gallo-Roman village of Les Résiniers, and the Rocher de Capluc. The route described does not pass through the famous Vases de Chine and Sèvres above the Gorges de la Jonte; this more technical and better-known section can easily be found on other Visorando guides for those who are keen to see them.

An easy hike on the Causse Méjan starting from Nivoliers via La Bégude Blanche and La Fretma, a remarkably restored hamlet on the Causse. TheGR®60passes through the wide open spaces reserved for Przewalski's horses... but you'll need a bit of luck to spot them!

When it's very hot in the plains, there's nothing like coming to cool off on a short route in the Aigoual forest on its northern slope.

A complete hike to discover Mont Aigoual, its panoramic views and forests, passing through the Hort de Dieu arboretum. Partially shaded route alternating between large and small paths in the forest and open trails.A few kilometres on a DFCI track that quickly joins a more shaded area.

A hike in the heart of the Cévennes in the Mont Aigoual massif, where a variety of landscapes awaits you, depending on the slope—whether facing the Atlantic or the Mediterranean. You will pass through deciduous and coniferous forests and peat bogs, with the highlight, in fine weather, being a view stretching all the way to the sea as you cross the bridge over the Cascades d’Orgon. The hike follows sections of thePR® trail marked in yellow andthe GR® trail in red and white. You will also be well guided by the signposts marking this circular route.

The hike begins in the Cévennes National Park. This first stage takes place in the Aigoual State Forest, which forms part of the “Les Causses et les Cévennes” site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We follow the drovers' road linking Languedoc to Aubrac, still used today by sheep to reach the summer pastures of the Aigoual.
