Description of the walk

Start in front of the Meyrueis Tourist Office, Rue de l'Horloge, on the banks of the Jonte.

GR®6andGRP® Tour du Causse Méjean signposting

(S) With your back to the Tourist Office, head right towards the east along the Jonte and, after about thirty metres, take the bridge on the left to cross the river. Continue along the road beyond the bridge, and after 200 m, at the bend to the right, you’ll come to a cross.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin du Cagnard, then after about 100 metres, at the junction, turn right, and after a further 25 metres, at the fork, turn left. The path, which is in fairly poor condition in places, winds its way up to the D986; cross it carefully, continue straight ahead and after about 60 metres, you’ll reach a wide track.

(2) Turn left. After about 700 m, you’ll reach the small access road to Pauparelle. Follow this road to the left for about 100 metres, then leave it for a good track slanting off to the right. After about 2 km of steady climb, a few hairpin bends and some picturesque rocks, you’ll reach the Croix de la Croisette and a three-way junction.

(3) Turn left, then after 150 m, at the fork, left again. The path follows a more or less straight course for over a kilometre, then joins the D18. Cross over to take the small road opposite (heading north-west) towards Mas de la Font. 200 m further on, the road joins the access road to the hamlet, clearly visible on the right.

(4) Cross the road (menhir) to reach the field, and look for a faint path a little further to the left. This path continues north-westwards to a well-marked track, and after about 1.2 km, reaches the D986. Cross it, and continue in the same direction. About 400 m after the road, look out for the markings at a crossroads.

(5) Turn right, almost directly opposite, and after 200 m, reach the access road to the hamlet of Nabrigas. Cross the road and continue straight ahead. Join the D63, turn left, and head towards a small pass at the Tombe du Géant.

(6) Continue along the road for about 150 m, and at the fork, turn left onto the access path to Aven Armand (buildings clearly visible below). Arrive at Aven Armand.

(7) Cross the car park heading west, pass the historic entrance to the karstic cave, and reach the D63. Turn left and continue along the road to the junction at the hamlet of Les Herans.

(8) Leave the D63, cross the hamlet heading due south. At the end of the hamlet, the road turns sharply right and becomes a track. After 600 m, pass the hamlet of Les Horts on your left, and after a further 1.8 km, arrive at the junction at the entrance to Hyelzas (Le Fedou cheese dairy on the right).

(9) Turn left towards the village, continue straight on, ignoring any paths or roads branching off to the right or left, until you reach the western exit of Hyelzas and arrive at the Ferme Caussenarde (E).

A fairly short stage with no difficulties, but perhaps the most monotonous.
Right from the start, we are diverted (due to the collapse of a retaining wall), which allows us to pass through the hamlet and the chaos of Pauparelle, which was my favourite part of this stage.
Passing in front of the historic entrance to the karstic cave of Aven Armand.
Refreshments available on arrival at the Hyelzas cheese dairy

Following the collapse of a low retaining wall, the route has been diverted (under a local by-law dated March 2024) and now passes through the beautiful hamlet of Pauparelle. This adds 1.5 km to the walk. There is an excellent cheese shop in Hielzas.
