Hyelzas - Le Rozier

Thissecond stage of the Tour du Causse Méjean crosses the lush south-western part of the Causse before descending to Le Rozier, at the confluence of the Tarn and the Jonte. Along the way, the beautiful church of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers, the Gallo-Roman village of Les Résiniers, and the Rocher de Capluc. The route described does not pass through the famous Vases de Chine and Sèvres above the Gorges de la Jonte; this more technical and better-known section can easily be found on other Visorando guides for those who are keen to see them.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Clockwise tour of the Causse Méjean starting from Meyrueis

Description of the walk

Start from the Maison Caussenarde in Hyelzas (car park nearby).

GR®6andGRP® Tour du Causse Méjean signposting

(S) With your back to the Maison Caussenarde, turn right heading west, and after 80 m, take thefirst path on the left. Ignore the two paths a little further on to the right, and after about 800 m, you will reach a fork in the path. Take the path on the right that turns northwards, and 150 m further on, look out for a gap in the fence on the left.

(1) Leave the path and go through the fence (wooden ladder system), then stay relatively close to the path for about fifty metres before it curves north-west. The path descends gently into the Ravin des Bastides, crosses the stream and then climbs back up to the D63 at a fork.

(2) Take the upper road and head up towards the hamlet of Les Bastides. Pass through it and continue westwards on the path that runs alongside the tarmac road. After a cantilevered section, the path turns north, then descends into the Vallon des Eyguières to join a track.

(3) Turn right towards Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers. After 600 m, the track forms a hairpin bend: look out for a path starting on the right amongst the rocks about 100 m after the bend.

(4) Turn right here, and after about 1.5 km, reach the road and then a crossroads south of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers.

(5) Walk to Saint-Pierre Church and back. Turn back and continue straight on until you reach a beautiful cross. Leave the road and take the path on the left. After about 600 m along a straight path, you’ll reach a crossroads marked by a stone cross.

(6) Take the path on the right and head towards the hamlet of La Viale. In the centre of the hamlet, you’ll come to a crossroads.

(7) Turn right. After 200 m, cross the road to take the track opposite, and after 350 m, at the fork, take the path on the left. The path then winds through picturesque countryside for about 1.2 km to reach the Grotte de l’Homme Mort.

(8) Continue due south, passing through the ancient Gallo-Roman village of Résiniers, then Les Arcs de Saint-Pierre. About 250 m after the latter, following a descent into the Ravin de Rounzenas, you’ll reach a track.

(9) Turn right, and after climbing out of the ravine on the other side, you’ll reach a crossroads.

(10) Continue straight on and join the road 50 m ahead. Turn left onto it, heading towards Cassagnes. Continue along the track due west until you reach the hamlet of Cassagnes; ignore the paths coming from the left or right for about 300 m, and you will reach a junction.

(11) Leave theGRP® Tour du Causse Méjean on your left (unless you wish to pass through the Vases de Chine and de Sèvres), and continue right on theGR®6. At the next fork, turn left. You will then begin the descent into the Gorges du Tarn. After 600 m, you will reach a crossroads (not marked on maps).

(12) Continue straight ahead for about 1 km until you reach a small pass. Turn left to head down the slope towards the Gorges de la Jonte (do not take the path opposite), and after about 200 m you will reach the junction with theGRP® Tour du Causse Méjean.

(13) Turn right, and after a straighter section following numerous hairpin bends, pass beneath the Rocher de Capluc and reach a track. Continue to the pylon above Le Rozier. Leave the road for a path on the right just after the pylon, and continue the descent along the path, thus avoiding the hairpin bends on the road, to Le Rozier. At the bottom of the descent, turn left towards the village centre, head towards the Pont district and the bridge providing access to Peyreleau on the opposite bank (E).

This was the stage we found most beautiful, the wow stage.
Between points 8 and 9, we took the time to enjoy all the natural curiosities such as the arches, caves, the large square...
The Tarn Gorges are very beautiful. At point 13, we took a short detour on the alternative route to the Vase de Sèvre. It was just magnificent, with vultures taking flight above our heads.
The stage ends at the hamlet of Capluc, a small, typical hilltop hamlet, but we didn't climb the rock, as it was a little too dizzying for us.
The descent to Le Rozier is quite steep, but there are no particular difficulties on this stage.

A lovely walk. The only change we made was that, after the hamlet of Cassagnes, we turned left towards the Mejean cliffs; the path is a bit more challenging around Vase de Sèvres and Vase de Chine, but it’s well worth the detour for the views over the Jonte Gorges and the chance to spot vultures.
