Jausiers walks
On the heights of Jausiers
This hike offers beautiful views of Jausiers and the iconic peaks of the Ubaye Valley (Chapeau de Gendarme, Massif des Séolanes).
This hike is not particularly difficult, despite a few steep ascents and descents and some exposed sections. (see practical information section)
Much of the hike takes place in the forest. You will also cross former agricultural areas. You will pass in front of the Château des Magnans, an architectural curiosity in Jausiers.
Beware of rockfalls and a tricky passage between (4) and (:5). Read the reviews for an alternative route.
Lac des peatlands starting from Lans
This walk takes you to Lac de Sagnes on foot from the hamlet of Lans. A lovely path through the forest leads to Lac de Sagnes. Return via a DFCI track to complete a circular route.
Portes de l'Enfer and Pissoun Waterfall
The Pissoun waterfall is a pretty waterfall that is easy to access. This circuit around the valley via the Portes de l'Enfer and their cliffs offers beautiful forest and pastoral landscapes and the trail is relatively easy.
The dairy farms of La Condamine-Châtelard
A lovely walk above La Condamine-Châtelard.
It’s fairly easy and offers a wide variety of scenery, both in the immediate surroundings and as you discover the wider area as you gain height and view it from different angles.
The vegetation varies considerably depending on the section, and for a walk of around 4–4½ hours, this is a real bonus;
Rousson route starting from Bouzoulières
This lovely route offers superb views of the Ubaye Valley, the Pain de Sucre and the Chapeau de Gendarme. A mix of woodland and meadows, and a hidden wetland area off the path.
Moderator’s note : reviews of this hike suggest that a GPS device or the Visorando app may be useful
Warning! Changing vegetation and the lack of signposting make this walk unpredictable if you do not feel confident navigating terrain that is sometimes difficult and off-trail. Rely on your eyes (traces of previous passage, topography), a 1:25,000 map (which will give you a larger viewing area than a GPS screen) and your GPS (to know where you are and how to orient your map).
Faucon-de-Barcelonnette - Bouzoulières
A walk in the hills above Faucon-de-Barcelonnette offering views of the valley’s peaks: Grande Séolane, Chapeau de Gendarme, Croix de l’Alpe...
The walk is mainly along a small tarmac road. A footpath allows you to shorten the road sections. We walked after snowfall and chose to be cautious, i.e. we took the road. The snow made the landscape even more beautiful.
Chapelle Saint-Anne la Condamine
Discover the Parpaillon valley and the Chapelle Saint-Anne la Condamine chapel.
Lac de Terres Plaines from the Col de Restefond road
A round trip to this high-altitude lake located in a cirque at the foot of the Chevalier (2,886 m). The trail overlooks the Terres Plaines valley and its endless shades of green.

The Croix de L'Alpe from La Rente
A round trip to this promontory offers a unique view of the entire Ubaye Valley, from the bell tower of Méolans-Revel to the Pas de la Reyssole.
Please note: at (5), the markings become difficult to read and the passage itself is technical.
Chapeau Gendarme Ouest from the Super-Sauze resort
A circular hike to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Ubaye Valley, ascending via the magnificent western path and descending via the eastern path.
⚠️ Please read the practical information carefully before undertaking this hike.

A lovely circular alpine hike starting from the Super-Sauze ski resort, with an ascent of the Chapeau de Gendarme.
Towards Lac de Pelouse from Lac des Peatlands
This hike starts at the beautiful Lac des Sagnes and ends at Lac de Pelouse, passing through woods (full of raspberries when we were there) and mountain pastures (with flocks of sheep and their canine guardians), where you may be lucky enough to spot lots of chamois.
La Tête de Viraysse and the military fortifications at Saint-Ours

Circular Tête Dure starting from Larche
If you’re heading to Col de Larche to see the classic lakes of Lauzanier and Oronaye, stop off at Larche; this quiet village offers numerous opportunities for circular walks, including this one which will take you up to the heights of Tête Dure, aptly named, after a moderately challenging walk through the varied landscapes of the Rouchouse valley.
Lac Verdet near the Col de la Bonette
A short and easy family walk when passing through the Col de la Bonette by car.
Circular from Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye to Fouillouse
An easy circular loop that takes you from Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye to the hamlet of Fouillouse, alternating between river and forest in absolute tranquillity.
Lac des Sagnes and Lac de Pelouse
This is a wild hike with no directional signs, as is often the case in the Alpes de Haute Provence. No major orientation difficulties. It begins with a long descent towards Lac des Sagnes in an area of summer grazing where sheep are present from the end of June. The presence of guard dogs requires vigilance, even if they are not all naturally aggressive. The climb back up to Lac de Pelouse is first through larch trees, then through alpine meadows. Beyond that, you need to join the rocky trail below the Crête de la Tour with a few exposed and somewhat degraded sections until you reach the Col de Pelouse. The final section is not difficult.
From Restefond to Sestrière via Cime de la Plate and Col de la Braïssa
A very beautiful high-mountain hike at the foot of Cime de la Bonette between the Alpes Maritimes and Alpes de Haute Provence. Very little traffic. Magnificent, rocky landscape. The upper Braissette lake is a very beautiful spot for bivouacking.
The Parpaillon Tunnel from the Grand Vallon via the Col de Girabeau
Starting from the Grand Vallon, the route climbs to the Col de Girabeau before reaching the legendary Parpaillon Tunnel (currently sealed off). The route offers sweeping panoramic views and is a lovely, nature-filled alternative to the Piste de Crévoux, which is very busy with motor vehicles in summer.
