On the heights of Jausiers

This hike offers beautiful views of Jausiers and the iconic peaks of the Ubaye Valley (Chapeau de Gendarme, Massif des Séolanes).
This hike is not particularly difficult, despite a few steep ascents and descents and some exposed sections. (see practical information section)
Much of the hike takes place in the forest. You will also cross former agricultural areas. You will pass in front of the Château des Magnans, an architectural curiosity in Jausiers.
Beware of rockfalls and a tricky passage between (4) and (:5). Read the reviews for an alternative route.

Description of the walk

The car park at the exit of Jausiers is located on the La Condamine-Chatelard road (D900), Col de Vars, Col de Larche. After the Arnaud garage, turn left just before a large building and park your vehicle.

S/E: Head towards Ubaye, cross the Pont des Chèvres bridge and turn left towards Pas de Grégoire, La Pisterne.

(1) La Pisterne. Take the path on the left towards La Pisterne. There is a signpost and yellow markings. Follow the marked path to the Cuguret fort trail.

(2) Cuguret trail. When you reach the Cuguret trail, turn right towards the military road indicated by a sign. Follow the trail up to an old kilometre marker.

(3) Mile marker. At the mile marker, leave the track by turning right onto the military road. Then begin the descent.

(4) Intersection. At the first intersection, leave the path marked in yellow.
Take the path on the left and follow it to the track. Cross the track; the path continues opposite. After crossing some old fields, the path runs alongside cliffs and overlooks the Abriès torrent.
Caution: there are some exposed sections, so take care.

(5) Signpost. When you reach the signpost marked "Pont des Mâts", turn right.
Caution: a cross bars the inscription "Pont des Mâts". We took the path anyway. It is not very well maintained but perfectly passable.
When you reach a house, take the path on the left and follow it to the bridge.

(6) Pont des Mâts. At the bridge, turn right and walk along the road to the next bridge. Take care.

(7) Pont Ubaye. Cross the bridge over the Ubaye and immediately turn right onto the path that runs alongside the stream and leads back to the starting point (S/E).

A very pleasant hike with beautiful views of the valley.
Quite a steep slope at the start of the route, then a few narrow and dizzying passages, but no particular difficulties if you are careful. The path between points 4 and 5 has been repaired and made safe.
I took a wrong turn at the end of the route, passing by the equestrian centre, which leads to the tarmac road after the bridge and not before, as described.

Very beautiful hike. It starts off a bit steeply, but it's manageable. Lovely views. Everything is doable, with no dangerous or blocked passages. It's a shame that the route ends with a good kilometre along the side of the road, which spoils the end a little.

A very pleasant route. Numerous panoramic views of Jausiers and the surrounding area.
Good training before heading into the mountains as there are quite a few hills.

Hello, a very beautiful hike that I would classify as moderately difficult, as there are quite a few exposed sections.
We had to turn back between points 4 and 5 because the passage was too dangerous.
We set off again from point No. 4, taking the parallel path lower down (towards the windsock), which brought us back to No. 5.
Upon arrival in Jausiers, return via the "Château de Magnans" and the leisure centre.

The hike was magnificent and we don't regret it!

However, BE CAREFUL, as one section had collapsed (near the rock called "de la rousse", or something like that). There is a metal stake to hold on to. I helped my family across as I am experienced and a geologist, but quite frankly, do not take this path until the situation has returned to normal.

Beautiful route, but you need to check your GPS frequently, or perhaps I'm just not very good at it.
