La Tête de Viraysse and the military fortifications at Saint-Ours

At an altitude of 2,772 metres, the Tête de Viraysse and its high military fortifications offer a magnificent panorama of Italy, the Mercantour and the Ubaye in a rugged mountain landscape between the Meyna and the rocks of Saint-Ours.

Description of the walk

Two parking options depending on the season: either opposite the chapel, near the fountain (reserved for buses during term time), or on the right after passing through the small hamlet of Saint-Ours.

(S/E) From the car park, leave the chapel on your left and head east towards the Col du Vallonnet via theGRP® marked in yellow and red.

(1) At the junction, continue straight ahead, ignoring the path on the left leading to Fort de Saint-Ours-le-Haut. Cross the first bridge and continue until you see a second bridge spanning the Riou du Pinet.

(2) About a hundred metres before the bridge, head up to the left along a wide path that is quite steep at the start.
Continue climbing gradually along this winding path.

(3) You’ll come to a track climbing up to the right. Ignore it and carry straight on ahead, heading up the valley.

(4) At the next junction, leave theGRP® path heading up to the Col du Vallonnet, and follow a widePR® path marked in yellow to the right. Cross the Riou du Pinet stream and continue the fairly steady climb.

(5) At the next junction joining theGR®5/56, follow the red and white-markedGR® to the right. You will then catch sight of the Viraysse huts.

(6) Reach the Viraysse huts and a junction with aPR®. Continue straight ahead and go round the huts to the right. Reach the Col de Mallemort.

(7) Leave theGR® and head straight ahead (south-east) along the yellow-markedPR®. This is a wide track that winds its way up to the Col de Viraysse. (The small shortcuts that cut across the bends are not recommended: erosion).

(8) Continue along the track, passing the Viraysse battery.

(9) Continue along the track.

(10) At the Tête de Viraysse, return via the same route to the Col de Malmort.

(7) From the pass, head down to the left (west then south-west) along the fairly steepGR®5/56 trailstowards Larche. Never leave theGR® trails, and ignore all paths crossing them (shortcuts cutting across the bends are not recommended: it is important to preserve the stability of the ground).

(11) At the next junction, leave theGR®5/56and follow the yellow-markedGRP® to the right (Fortified Border). This is a very pretty balcony path, crossing the Mallemort Plateau and offering a lovely view of the Larche valley and the forts of Roche-la-Croix. Follow the marker posts carefully. A little further on, you’ll pass a sheepfold and Mallemort Fort. Further down, the path gives way to a small road leading to the second bridge on the ascent route. Cross the Riou du Pinet.

(2) Join the ascent route and follow it downhill to the left, passing beneath the Fort de Saint-Ours-le-Haut (Maginot fortification) and reaching the car park (S/E).

A beautiful walk to the military buildings located below La Tête de Viraysse.
Then a quick climb to the battery at the summit of La Tête de Viraysse.
An impressive building! A thought for all the soldiers who built these buildings without mechanical means.
The descent offers a beautiful view of the Larche valley and a pleasant walk through the meadows.

A magnificent hike. No real difficulty, just the length of the route. Very varied scenery and the forts are of historical interest. We did this route on a splendid day. First snow at the top.
At the summit, a magnificent panorama. We were right opposite the Tête Dure, which we’d climbed the previous week, giving a fairly accurate view of the surrounding peaks from a different perspective.
Definitely worth doing again!

A beautiful view at the finish; please be aware that the area is popular with mountain bikers and even motorcyclists, as it lies on the edge of the Mercantour National Park. A few marmots and plenty of alpine flowers, particularly along the balcony path on the return journey to Saint-Ours in early June (tulips, daffodils, anemones and forget-me-nots).

A very interesting route through this mountainous landscape, offering a chance to reflect on the history and (military) events of this region. The number of forts and installations is impressive, starting with the large fort at the foot of the Col de Maller, and of course the Viraysse battery: both blend seamlessly into the landscape, having been built using local stone.
Many thanks for the clear description of the route between points 2 and 4, along the well-marked path which allowed us to avoid much of the climb on the stony road (contrary to the GR markings).
Very few people about: just half a dozen couples all day.
