The dairy farms of La Condamine-Châtelard

A lovely walk above La Condamine-Châtelard.
It’s fairly easy and offers a wide variety of scenery, both in the immediate surroundings and as you discover the wider area as you gain height and view it from different angles.
The vegetation varies considerably depending on the section, and for a walk of around 4–4½ hours, this is a real bonus;

Description of the walk

For convenience, park in the village, though there may be a few spaces along the D900.
Much of the walk is well signposted with numerous routes; the one we’re interested in is called “Les Metairies”.
The walk starts on the left, about 300m before you reach the village of La Condamine-Chatelard.

(S/E) To reach the start of the trail on the D900, take the path that follows the Ruisseau de Parpaillon, then return towards the D900 via a road on the right at the footbridge.

(1) Once you reach the D900, the path is 50m to the left opposite.
The path climbs above the road with a cliff looming ever closer overhead.

(2) When you reach “Le Châtelard”, cross the hamlet and continue left along the track.
Continue along this path, which climbs gently and winds its way up, passing under the power line.

(3) Continue straight ahead and pass under the power line again.

(4) At the "Le Clausal" junction, turn right.
The track continues without any difficulty, becoming a forest road on the right after the few houses in Mareilles.

(5) Just before a barrier, in the bend, leave the forest road and head straight ahead. The path quickly opens out and climbs slightly.

(6) At this highest point of the walk, leave the path and take a narrower path on the right that leads downhill.
Wade across the Riou du Prat. Continue along the path; don’t worry if it feels like you’re walking through someone’s property. The path becomes a track again. Do not cross the Riou again.

(7) Turn right towards Le Grach Haut and continue in the direction of Le Grach-Bas.

(8) At this hamlet, follow the route back via La Chapelle.
For your information: the road is not far for those who would like to head straight back to La Condamine.

(3) Turn left, go back via Le Châtelard, then take the D900 to return to the start (S/E).

Notes

We did this hike in August 2019.

Nothing in particular to report.
Crossing the Riou stream posed no problems for us; there was perhaps a bit more water at times, but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.
The fountain at Châtelard is a good place to cool off if needed.

Worth a visit

We particularly enjoyed the variety of landscapes, as well as the view towards Larche and the Barcelonette valley, which changes as you climb.

The forest before the (5) enchanted us.
The stretch between (5) and (7) offers stunning panoramic views.
The houses and the ruined dairy farm near the (8) are truly beautiful spots.

Didn’t see a soul (apart from two mountain bikers and a 4x4 that overtook us)! A lovely walk with scenery that varied depending on altitude and aspect (larch and pine forests, pastures), picturesque isolated hamlets and farms, some beautifully restored and others in ruins or abandoned. Lots of different panoramic views looking down (Ubaye valley) or up (Col de Larche, Meyronnes, Fort de Tournoux). Interesting geology too (cliffs, folds, etc.).
We parked in front of the cemetery, almost right at the start of the trail, thus avoiding the section on the road, and it took us barely 4 hours to complete the route.
The only minor issue with the route description: there is no (or no longer any) barrier at the bend at point 5. So this needs updating.

A very pleasant route, easily accessible, and shaded for more than half the route (whilst still offering plenty of views of the landscape). It really allows you to ‘immerse’ yourself in the atmosphere of life in these mountains as it was some time ago, with the succession of dairy farms (even if some have become holiday homes, or the one between points 7 and 8 has collapsed…).
One comment: the fork to the right at point 6 is very tricky to spot (unless you follow the route on your GPS). We missed it when we passed by and had to go back to find it when we realised we were climbing too high. (Luckily, I know how to use a map and altimeter accurately.....).

Crossing the Riou du Prat can be more difficult in spring when the snow melts or after heavy rain.
If you take your shoes off, it’s doable.

A lovely route.
You can shorten it a bit.
A little-used footpath, but interesting for its insight into the old way of life on dairy farms.
