Rousson route starting from Bouzoulières

This lovely route offers superb views of the Ubaye Valley, the Pain de Sucre and the Chapeau de Gendarme. A mix of woodland and meadows, and a hidden wetland area off the path.
Moderator’s note : reviews of this hike suggest that a GPS device or the Visorando app may be useful

Warning! Changing vegetation and the lack of signposting make this walk unpredictable if you do not feel confident navigating terrain that is sometimes difficult and off-trail. Rely on your eyes (traces of previous passage, topography), a 1:25,000 map (which will give you a larger viewing area than a GPS screen) and your GPS (to know where you are and how to orient your map).

Description of the walk

Immediately after the hamlet of Bouzoulières, above Faucon de Barcelonnette, leave the car at the first hairpin bend on the right; the track is very wide here and allows you to park lengthways.

(S/E) Take the correct track heading eastwards, passing the sheepfold overlooking the path on the left. Continue to a fork in the forest tracks. Take the track and follow the hairpin bends uphill.

(1) You’ll come out onto another track; take this one to the left, heading west.

(2) Just past the first bend, leave the track and head up to the right into an area where the forest is more open.
Caution: there is no path and it is a bit steep and overgrown, but it is passable. You will emerge into a large clearing dominated by cliffs and scree, home to a small pond. Head up to the left, keeping parallel to the valley axis with the pond on your right.

(3) Reach this small ridge, with its magnificent views. Then continue on past the ruined Rousson farm, take the path that descends from there and rejoin the track. Follow it to the right. At the fork in the tracks, turn left. From Rousson, descend partly along the track and partly across the vast meadows bordering it

(4) Leave the track and look below, at the tree line, for a narrow and sometimes very steep path that descends to the starting point. Be careful, there are several paths; the GPS track is very unreliable here. In any case, the main thing is to head downhill.
- If you don’t fancy venturing down this steep, vegetation-clogged slope, simply stay on the track, which will take you back to the starting point safely anyway.
If you take the steep path, once you’re back on the track, turn left to get back to the car (S/E).

A lovely walk – we couldn’t manage route 2 or part of route 3, as the climb was too steep and full of branches and fallen trees. So we followed the forest track and rejoined the route halfway through section 3. Despite this, the views of the surrounding mountains, which were still snow-capped, were superb – a real treat for the eyes. We also followed the path on section 4 without cutting through the vegetation.

A lovely walk if you don’t have much time to spare, and plenty of sunshine, which is lovely in winter. The path up to the wetland is signposted just after the bend, which saves you from having to struggle through the undergrowth and boulders.

The app works well, but part of the path no longer exists. There are no signposts, and the upper section of the route is blocked by branches and trees.

We set off from Bouzoulières (car park near the barns) to do the Rousson route, but unfortunately we couldn’t find any signposts or signs pointing to Rousson. We only completed part of the route because there were two places where we couldn’t find the path; at one of these, when we reached the picnic tables (Fumet), we couldn’t find the route to the water point and the viewpoint, so we followed the forest track used by mountain bikers to get back to the car park. There are no signs pointing towards Rousson.
A bit disappointed not to have completed the whole route, but it’s a lovely spot that we’ll definitely be visiting again

A lovely little walk, alternating between wide paths, medium-width paths and narrow paths, some of which are partially overgrown.

From point 2 onwards, the route is a bit unpredictable, but you soon get the hang of which way to go. And you quickly realise why this detour is worth it when you reach the small plateau (point 3)

I liked:

- The length and distance;
- Beautiful, fairly varied scenery;
- Sections both in the shade and in the open.

What I liked less:
- A bit chaotic between points 2 and 3, not to say perilous.
- The basic route is very haphazard; I tried to follow it to the letter before realising that it simply crosses the actual path numerous times. So be careful not to rely too heavily on the creator’s route, as it is sometimes quite far from reality.

A brilliant walk! The clearing is stunning. The crossing point (4) is tricky (steep slope, bushes…), but it is possible to continue along the track; however, this does not detract from the charm of the walk.

A short, easy walk in a very pleasant setting with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The off-trail section does, however, require you to be able to read a map so you can leave the path at the right moment and head in the right direction. The vegetation tends to encroach on the path, but it’s a short stretch and not difficult. The arrival in the small valley is absolutely lovely.
