Riou Bourdoux Horizontal Path

A ridge walk with breathtaking views of the Grande Séolane and Chapeau de Gendarme massifs. A lovely reward after the effort.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Refuge de la Pare, located on the Riou Bourdoux track. To get there, follow signs for La Pare from the road that runs behind the aerodrome and climbs towards La Frâche. The track is 5 km long and suitable for vehicles. The car park can accommodate numerous vehicles and is situated just before the ONF barrier.

(S/E) Head north along the track until you reach a four-way junction. Here you will find theGR®6.

(1) Turn left onto it, stay on this wide track, cross the Aiguettes ravine and then the Église ravine to reach a path junction.

(2) Leave theGR® here and turn onto the path branching off to the right, marked in yellow. Continuing uphill, cross the Bois des Aiguettes. You will arrive at a large meadow at Clot Boye.

(3) Continue up the slope ahead and, after a few hairpin bends, reach the Cabane Neuve junction.

(4) Stay on the path on the left, turn right then at a 90° angle, and continue the climb. Cross several streams before reaching, after a wooded area, a new crossroads with a Yellow Cross on a larch tree.

(5) Keep left and continue to follow the yellow markings; finish the climb by reaching an almost level path, known as the Chemin Horizontal.

(6) Turn right onto it, still following the yellow markings. Pass in front of the Grande Source. You will then reach the junction with the Col des Orres path. Ignore this and continue along the Chemin Horizontal. On this long stretch, cross several streams in succession to rejoin theGR®6.

(7) Take it to the right and now follow the red and white markings downhill. Navigate a series of hairpin bends through the Riou Bourdoux National Forest. You will then reach the Refuge de la Pare.

(8) Continue the descent, still on theGR®, to quickly reach the initial junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Leave theGR® here and turn left onto the yellow-marked path through the undergrowth. Cross the Ravin des Aiguettes stream via a pretty wooden footbridge. You will then reach the hamlet of l’Église.

(9) Continue straight ahead along the Sentier de Découverte to reach the car park at the Refuge de la Pare (S/E).

Notes

A circular hike requiring good hiking equipment. The hike is only worthwhile in good weather, to enjoy the extraordinary views offered by the Chemin Horizontal.
(4) A shelter is available at the rear of the new hut if it is not occupied by the shepherd.
Between (6) and (7) there are two springs along the horizontal path.
(8) A spring at the Refuge de la Pare.
(8) Shelter also at the Refuge de la Pare.

Worth a visit

Between (6) and (7). Breathtaking views all along the Chemin Horizontal over the Barcelonnette valley and the surrounding mountains: Petite and Grande Séolane, Trois Evêchés, Estrop, Chapeau de gendarme and as far as the Alpes-Maritimes. The trail winds its way at around 2,300 m (maximum altitude 2,337 m).
(8) Refuge de la Pare is a lovely spot to stop for a drink and a sweet treat, with homemade syrups and soft drinks, tarts and cakes that are worth the hike alone. And as a bonus, you’ll receive a very warm welcome. For lunch or dinner, remember to book in advance.
(9) The Discovery Trail will take you past the ruins of the church hamlet and the ONF information boards.

Criticism is easy, but art is difficult. Now I would be happy to see one of Jjlaribal's walks posted on Visorando so that we can draw inspiration from it. Have a good walk anyway, because that's kind of the point.

Too many details in the directions "kill" the directions. In fact, the route is not well marked because it is not very well travelled. The only place where you might hesitate is when you come to a fenced-in field. You need to go through the fence and then simply follow the yellow markings (and not turn 90 degrees as indicated in the basic commentary). In general, there are too many details in the various descriptions of the walks.

Very pleasant, magnificent view
The Col des Orres is definitely worth a visit!
Time overestimated (5 hours 45 minutes of walking including the pass)
Poor welcome at the Pare refuge, a shame!

A very beautiful balcony hike with magnificent views, very flowery at this time of year. The Col des Orres option adds a little extra flavour. A warm welcome at the Pare refuge for a short break. Thank you for sharing.

Hello, this is a magnificent walk with exceptional views of the surrounding peaks. As for the time, everyone can estimate their walking speed by looking at the map. The time given here is an estimate generated by the app, and it’s always a bit over the top. This means you can spend more time at the Refuge de la Pare (in season, of course).
Best regards, Bernard

A truly beautiful walk. Don’t be put off by the forest tracks at the start of the walk up to Cabane Neuve (4), as it’s still a pleasant experience. And then – wow! In fine weather and with the autumn light, the view invites you to slow your pace. The Sentier Horizontal becomes a moment of contemplative wandering. Thank you for this walk.

A lovely route, but the estimated time was a bit overestimated, and it’s a real shame not to climb up to the Col des Orres, where there’s a 360-degree view. In total, I walked for 6 hours, not including breaks (lunch and a stop at the summit).
