Description of the walk

Park along the road after the hamlet of Lans.

(S/E) Continue on foot along the path to a junction where two routes to the lake are signposted.

(1) Turn sharply left. The path, which initially heads north, curves to the right and heads east. Keep heading in this direction, ignoring the paths on either side, until you reach a DFCI track.

(2) Cross this track to take the signposted path on the other side. Head back up towards the forest.

(3) At the Ravin du Combalas, ignore the path on the right, which runs more or less parallel to the one you should continue to follow, and go straight on.

(4) Pass the Ravin du Sapet and continue along the marked path.

(5) When you see a hut in the distance, do not continue in that direction but follow a track that descends to the left. Be careful, the tracks are barely visible but are definitely there. You will soon reach Lac des Sagnes, which is a peatland.

(6) Set off again along the only road leading to the lake, which runs alongside the Torrent d'Abriès. You will reach a fork (elevation 1892m).

(7) Take the DFCI path which climbs up to your left. Cross the Ravin du Combalas and reach the junction with the ascending path.

(2) Ignore this and continue along the main path to complete a circular route.

(8) When you reach the junction with a pretty shepherd’s hut on your right, continue straight ahead. You’ll reach the crossroads with the two signs for Lac de Sagnes, which is a peatland.

(1) Keep left and head down to the car park (S/E).

There aren’t many signposts, but the route description is clear; it would be hard to go wrong. The outward route is varied (forest, mountain pasture), and the finish offers a lovely view of the lake from above; the return path is long but easy, with no significant elevation gain.

I went on this walk with my dog. We came across a flock of sheep being herded by a Pyrenean Shepherd who was rather unfriendly; I had to carry my dog – even though he’s usually well-behaved – until the shepherdess called him back and asked me how my dog was doing... watch out! There are also hunters with hounds...
The lake is very pretty; I walked all the way round it easily. The flora and fauna are interesting. The return journey is along forest tracks that are easy to walk but too busy with cars and motorbikes...

An easy hike through the woods and along a forest track. Only the upper section (in the mountain pastures) before heading back down towards the lake was enjoyable, thanks to the views and meeting the shepherd and his very friendly mountain dogs. Once you reach the lake’s shores, civilisation returns in the form of cars and motorbikes in large numbers – it’s really not pleasant. Fortunately, the return journey along the forest track is easy, but there are cars and motorbikes there too.

A walk through varied landscapes. The colours of the lake and its shores are beautiful and make you want to come back in autumn to admire the scenery in different hues.
We had no trouble finding the route. The only potential difficulty is the length of the route.

Snowshoe hike on Monday 24 January. No particular difficulties. The hike took 7 hours, including stops for photos and a picnic in the sunshine. The scenery was spectacular and magnificent – there are simply no stronger words to describe it. As it’s not very busy at this time of year, we didn’t meet a single soul.

The signs had been removed. The only indication of the way back was an arrow on the ground marked by three pieces of wood, which we overlooked. As a result, the journey took three hours longer.
