Views of Lake Serre-Ponçon from the Col de Pontis

A charming little loop hike combining wooded passages, stony paths and panoramic ridges. Some sections may be daunting for those prone to vertigo, but the route is well worth the effort: breathtaking views of Lake Serre-Ponçon, the Ubaye, the Durance, the bay of Saint-Michel, Morgon and Morgonnet, as well as the entire surrounding mountain range, from Les Chabrières to Mont Guillaume. And to round off the walk in style, a stop at the small chapel, carefully restored by the Rimachays association, is a must. A true moment of serenity in the heart of nature.

Description of the walk

Park a little north of the Col de Pontis, at the intersection of the D7 (Route du Col de Pontis) and a small parallel road, or in one of the few spaces available between 10 and 200 metres before the starting point.
Please note: this is an unmarked trail

(S/E) Take the road parallel to the D7 to reach the start of the forest path (Chemin des Hugues) and follow it for about 50 metres, then turn left and you will soon come to an intersection.

(1) Take the dirt track on the left. The path on the right will be used for the return journey. The main path is currently impassable due to a landslide. You must therefore follow the track across the field to reach the path that enters the undergrowth. You will arrive at a clearing with a beautiful view of the lake on the Durance side.

(2) Take the forest path on the far right, which climbs towards Morgonnet. You will arrive at a cliff. An unofficial marker (green and/or red) indicates the route to climb this rocky slope and reach a place called La Coquille, with a carved Virgin Mary statue. Magnificent panoramic view of the entire lake, on the Ubaye and Durance sides.

(3) Continue along the cliff ridges towards Morgonet and Morgon, with a continuous view of the lake. Caution: slippery and exposed route, not recommended for people prone to vertigo. An alternative path, a few metres lower down, can be taken.

(4) At the crossroads, turn right.

(5) At the next junction, turn right onto the DFCI track.

(6) When the track turns left, leave it and take a path on the right towards the Saint-Pierre Chapel.

(7) After about 100 metres, turn right onto a path that quickly leads to the chapel, which has been restored by the Rimachays association. Retrace your steps.

(7) Continue west along the main path. When you reach the edge of a field, stay on the path to the left which runs alongside the field and enters the forest. Descend and return to the crossroads you took at the start of the walk.

(1) Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

A beautiful hike with superb views. You can see practically the entire lake. From point 2 to point 5, you need to pay close attention to the route on the app, as the trail is barely marked in places. The climb up to the statue of the Virgin Mary and the cross is more challenging, but well worth the effort. The descent is very easy.
