Varennes-sous-Dun walks

A beautiful, easy walk in the Brionnais-Pays Clayettois region, surrounded by peace and greenery. The route allows you to discover some of the ponds and old grain mills.

Large circular figure-of-eight on Mont Saint-Cyr (771m) located near Montmelard, Aigueperse and Matour starting from En Crozan (769m). Discover beautiful panoramic views of the Morvan, Mont Blanc, Mont Saint-Rigaud and Puy de Dôme. Wander through meadows, Douglas firs, holly, beech and oak trees.

On the GR®7 trail, between the Col des Vaux in the commune of Verosvres and Mont Rigaud, passing through the village of Saint-Bonnet-des-Bruyères. There are many shaded sections in the forest and beautiful landscapes. The trail is sometimes unmarked, so bring an IGN map, but it is preferable to have a GPS device.

On the GR®7 trail between the Col des Vaux, in the commune of Verosvres, and Chevagny-sur-Guye, passing by the Butte de Suin This is a very quiet section of the GR®7. There are no signposts at some junctions and no footprints in the tall grass to mark the route, so you must take an IGN map with you, although a GPS device is preferable. This section of the GR® needs to be more popular, as it is not difficult and offers beautiful scenery. The view from the Butte de Suin is magnificent.

Circuit around Mont Saint-Rigaud (1,009 m), the highest point in the Rhône department. At the summit, there is a beautiful view from the belvedere, followed by a walk through the forest. The path follows the old railway line and crosses the Châtelard viaduct.

A short hike with no significant elevation gain or difficulty. Varied landscapes of the Beaujolais Vert, often in the woods but also in open areas with views of the surrounding countryside. Note: a large part of the route, from Mont Pinay to Les Petites Fayes, is on tarmac, but these are small roads with very little traffic.

A hike of less than 3 hours, without any major difficulties. Around Mont Pinay, the ascent and descent are a little steeper. Mostly in the woods, with more open passages and views of the surrounding landscapes of the Beaujolais Vert. This is a longer version of the "Circular in the Foupeysson forest, at the foot of Mont Pinay" route. Note: part of the route, from the hamlet of Les Rousselles to Mont Pinay and Les Petites Fayes, is on tarmac, but these are small roads with very little traffic.

During this hike, you will pass: - Above a 4,153-metre-long railway tunnel and near a 96-metre-deep ventilation shaft. - The Col des Écharmeaux, which has been a transit point for goods between the Saône and Loire valleys since the 14th century. Napoleon is said to have passed through here on his return from Elba. - At La Roche d'Ajoux (970 m), the highest point in the upper Azergues valley.

The village of Saint-André-le-Désert is located between Clunisois and Charolais. I suggest this short walk in the heart of the Charolais cattle breeding region. The paths run through a landscape of rolling hills and hedgerows. You will pass through small hamlets with stone houses and places steeped in history. Suitable for families.

A peaceful walk through the forest and meadows around Meaux-la-Montagne.

This loop starts in the village of Meaux-la-Montagne and follows roads and paths that take you to the peaks of La Nuizière via the Col de la Cambuse, the Croix du Villard and the Croix de la Nuizière, through fields and pine forests.

The three châteaux in Quincié-en-Beaujolais are well worth a visit. What's more, you'll pass through a highly varied landscape of vineyards, forests and meadows. The three châteaux trail is very well signposted and offers 4 variants of varying lengths.

This is a lovely walk through woods and vineyards with some beautiful views. What's more, if you do this walk at the right time of day and in the right season, you may encounter a number of wild animals.

Magnificent landscape without too much elevation gain. Very pleasant hike as there is little traffic, even on the roads. Please note: there are no water sources for 35 km. You will need to bring supplies for this long, pleasant route along the water's edge in the forest and along the RCEA. You can stop at a bakery about halfway along the route in Paray-le-Monial.

This hike will take you to the heights of the Beaujolais region, where you can admire the vineyards, the Saône valley and, in the distance, the Alps, weather permitting. It alternates between vineyards and forests, following the GR®76 for a while. The signposting is varied, so it is not described here.

Climb up to the plateau of the Sainte-Marie farm, starting from the centre of the village of Saint-Étienne-la-Varenne and passing through the Trou du Loup. The hike returns to the starting point through the vineyards.
