Description of the walk

(S/E) Starting from Chassigny-sous-Dun, walk through the village and admire the flowers. Keep left at every junction.

(1) At the cemetery, head up the hill opposite towards the hamlet of Le Bey, turn right, go straight on and cross the D985 towards Le Vieux Bourg.

(2) At Vieux Bourg, off the route, head straight ahead and enter the chapel, which has been beautifully restored by a voluntary association.

(3) Then return to the crossroads.

(2) Turn right.

(4) At the bend, head up to the left and cross the Bois de Dreuillien. At the crossroads, turn right towards the hamlet. Pass through the hamlet and, at the end, take the path up to the left then keep to the right.

(5) Continue to the right through the woods, then, at the exit, head down to the right via l’Aye. At the first junction, go down to the right, then turn left at the next fork.

(6) Then pass by the Madone, pause at its feet to admire the view, and head down to the village of Mussy-sous-Dun. Once on the road, turn left, then take the first road on the right to reach the village centre.

(7) In the village, head to the church, dedicated to Saint Austrégésile; only the apse dates from the Romanesque period. Take a quick first turn right then left.

(8) Head downhill and pass under the arches of the Mussy-sous-Dun Viaduct, which is 561 metres long and has a slightly curved alignment.

(9) Turn right towards Carrefour de la Fabrique.

(10) Turn left, cross the Mussy and then head up to the right to the hamlet of Les Murs. At the hamlet, turn right and then immediately left. Continue along the path to the right of the houses before keeping left at the next two forks. Cross the Bois de Mussey, heading straight on to En Forenne.

(11) At En Forenne, you can turn left for a stop in Chauffailles or turn right to continue the route.

(12) Turn left and cross the D985 towards Montrange. At the Y-junction, turn right. At the next T-junction, turn left then immediately right. Continue to Les Chizelles.

(13) Cross the road to the opposite side.

(14) Turn left and cross the river (Class I) called the Mussy. At the junction, turn left then right and head up to the road cross.

(15) Turn left, then at the next crossroads, veer sharply left and enter the village of Chassigny-sous-Dun, turning right to finish your route (S/E).

Worth a visit

  • Mussy-sous-Dun Viaduct:the highest arches rise to 63 metres and the piers are sunk into the ground to a depth of between 8 and 12 metres. Materials were transported from La Chapelle-sous-Dun station by ox-drawn carts to the locality known as ‘La Roche Coupée’, where a Decauville railway line was specially built to carry them to the construction site.
  • Romanesque chapel at Chassigny.
  • Madone, for a breathtaking view.
