Massat walks

This signposted walk in the Massif de l’Arize is well worth exploring. The Roc de Peyre Caussile (1,339 m) and the Cap de Campets (1,504 m) are two peaks linked to the pastoral history of the Couserans and the ancient paths connecting the valleys. On this heavily wooded route, you’ll enjoy views of Massat, the Séronais, the Arize and, on a clear day, as far as the Toulouse plains, the Corbières and the Aude. At Cap de Campets, the 360° view is magnificent, stretching from Cap Carmil to Mont Valier and taking in the entire Couserans massif. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to all those who, year after year, maintain these paths with such passion – whether they are local authority staff, enthusiasts or hunters.

This short hike will allow you to see the Lafont Tower and enjoy a superb 360° view from the summit of Cap de Campets.

This circuit provides access to the dry stone hamlet of Les Orris. It is a magnificent pastoral village, used for summer grazing, set in lush green surroundings opposite the Pic des Trois Seigneurs. The hamlet of Les Goutets was used from the 1800s until around 1950.

This easy hike allows you to admire all the peaks of the Ariège, including Mont Valier. From the road (first third of the route) to the end, this majestic landscape unfolds throughout the walk. This route can also be done by mountain bike.

A beautiful hike with lovely views of the town of Foix and its castle, as well as the Pyrenees mountain range. A very quiet hike, with unspoilt nature, shaded sections in the forest and sections exposed to the sun.

A pleasant, easy hike from the Col de Port, in a magnificent setting combining forest, stream, picnic area and views of the Pyrenees. Not very busy except at the pass.

The Pic de la Journalade, visible from afar due to its jagged contours, is reserved for fit and experienced walkers. The first section is very accessible. The second section, between points (3) and (4), involves a lot of scrambling to cross three very steep rocky outcrops, requiring you to use your hands and stow away your walking sticks. The final ascent to the Journalade is very steep but not dangerous. The descent is tricky as there is no path and there are many hazards: a slippery slope and rocky outcrops to negotiate before reaching a proper path.

A lovely walk starting from the Col de Port, with stunning views of the Pyrenees range: Mont Fourcat, Saint-Barthélémy, Montcalm, Pic d’Estats, Trois Seigneurs, Mont Vallier and, on a clear day, sometimes the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. The walk can be halved by turning back at the Pic de Razels.

A short, easy Sunday hike (500 m elevation gain) leading to Pic de Razels (1,600 m) with a magnificent 360° view. After a winding climb, you reach the ridge, which you follow to the left through a pretty wood to the peak. Lovely views all along the way.

This is a beautiful hike accessible from the Col de Port, offering magnificent views of the Pyrenees mountain range, from Saint-Barthélémy in the east to Mont Valier and beyond in the west. After a fairly short climb to Pic d'Estibat, the hardest part is over, as the rest of the route continues in a circular fashion along a beautiful ridge before descending through woods and returning on the north side via a pretty valley past the Estibat hut. Please take note of the comments in the practical information section.

At the foot of Mont Béas, a lovely climb towards Col Dret offers stunning panoramic views of the Couserans peaks, the Pic des Trois Seigneurs massif and, if the weather is clear, the Roc Blanc in the background behind Port de Lers. The descent takes you through the Courtal de Cougneit, former shepherds’ huts, before continuing through a beautiful fir forest.

A snowshoe walk in the Col du Port area. This route provides easy access to the base of the Griets summit, making it suitable for children. More experienced hikers can continue on to the Pic d’Estibat.

A beautiful circular starting from Port de Lers, passing by Pic de Girantes (or Mont Ceint) with magnificent 360° views, then descending to Port de Saleix and climbing back up to Port de Bassiès with superb views of the refuge and the Bassiès lakes. Return via Pas de la Portère via a difficult climb.

Do not underestimate these two days, which pack in significant gradients over a relatively short distance.The first day is interesting for the discoveries it offers and a section with virtually no signposting. The arrival at the refuge is magnificent.Spending the night at the Refuge de Bassiès allows you to look forward to the return journey on the second day with greater peace of mind.A visit to the Étangs de Bassiès can be planned for the second day from the refuge, leaving some of your kit there. You can then collect all your kit for the challenging return walk to the Port de Lers car park.

The first day takes you to the Refuge de Bassiès, passing huts, a valley, mountain passes, an old mine, a pond, and various cols and mountain passes. Discover the Ajéou plateau with its chasm, sinkholes, summer pastures and numerous barns, some of which are bird-proof. In several places, you can enjoy views of the Ariège mountain range.

A lovely walk through the woods starting from Aulus-les-Bains, passing through the Plateau de Souliou.

Loop starting from Alus-Les-Bains with varied landscapes. Hike to be undertaken after the snow has completely disappeared (check in advance). Several passages through peat, in the middle of streams and avalanche corridors.Please note: look carefully for markings and signposts, which are not always very visible.

A lovely, shaded climb between Aulus and the foot of Mont Béas, culminating in a beautiful view of the neighbouring peaks.
