Circular via Port de Lers, Port de Bassiès and Pas de la Portère

A beautiful circular starting from Port de Lers, passing by Pic de Girantes (or Mont Ceint) with magnificent 360° views, then descending to Port de Saleix and climbing back up to Port de Bassiès with superb views of the refuge and the Bassiès lakes. Return via Pas de la Portère via a difficult climb.

Description of the walk

Park in the Port de Lers car park.

(S/E) Take the GRP® Tour du Pic des Trois Seigneurs, heading south-southwest, signposted Port de Saleix, and climb through the woods to the pass.

(1) Turn left towards the south-east, leaving the return path on your right. Continue to the next junction.

(2) Continue on the GRP® (red and yellow) which climbs to the left and reach the summit of Pic de Girantès.

(3) Descend south, following the markings to Port de Saleix.

(4) Continue straight ahead to climb up to Étang d'Alate.

(5) Walk along the left side of the lake and head to Port de Bassiès.

(6) Enjoy the view of the Bassiès lakes, then descend to Port de Saleix via the same path.

(4) Descend to the left towards the west via the quickest path. It is also possible to follow the GR®10, but this takes longer due to the hairpin bends. Join the GR®10.

(7) Follow it straight ahead, heading northwest, for about 600 m. You will reach a hairpin bend.

(8) Leave the GR®10 and take the small path westwards along the mountainside to reach the Pas de la Portère.

(9) Continue straight ahead to cross the Girantès Plateau and reach a crossroads.

(10) Turn right, heading north-east, and begin a very steep climb. Cross an unnamed pass near Tuc des Paloumères. Turn left and rejoin the uphill route.

(1) Descend via the same route you took to ascend until you reach the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(4) Exceptional 360° view, notably of Mont Vallier to the west, the Pique Rouge de Bassiès, the Pique d'Endron, the Tabe massif and the Tarbésou.

(6) Magnificent view of the refuge and, above all, the Bassiès lakes. A beautiful spot for a snack.

A lovely route that climbs and descends, often in a straight line over 1,100 metres of elevation gain (I did 100 more by mistake): that's why I think the walk is classified as "difficult". The paths are well marked. At 8, you have to leave the hairpin bend and head straight onto a narrow path trodden by cows: don't worry, it leads gently onto the Girantès plateau. There, thick grass hides the path: just follow the yellow markings, and if you can't find them, don't worry, you'll easily reach point 9 at the foot of the unnamed pass that you can see in the distance. From point 9, the (last) steep climb will not be popular with your calves!
There are beautiful views almost everywhere!
