The Goutets irises

This circuit provides access to the dry stone hamlet of Les Orris. It is a magnificent pastoral village, used for summer grazing, set in lush green surroundings opposite the Pic des Trois Seigneurs. The hamlet of Les Goutets was used from the 1800s until around 1950.

Description of the walk

Park in the hamlet of La Foulie, just at the entrance, on the left.

(S/E) Starting from the hamlet, with the car park behind you, go up to the left along the path (route no. 16 marked in yellow) which leads to the hamlet of Carol. Turn right and continue to the bend.

(1) Go up the stairs. At the Goutets sign, leave the path and go up to the left. Cross the Ruisseau des Agoulis and join a track on the left until you reach a fork.

(2) Take a path on the left that leads to the hamlet of ruined barns. Continue to the mountain pastures until you reach the Orris barns.

(3) Go around the barns on the right, enjoying a magnificent view of the Valier. Keep right, then right again towards Goutets.

(4) Continue downhill on the same track until you reach the stream.

(5) Cross and continue to the crossroads on the way out.

(2) Take the track that heads west, to the left, and descends towards La Foulie. At the hairpin bend, continue straight ahead, pass La Plagne, and arrive at a ford.

(6) Continue down the track, then follow it to the hamlet of La Foulie (S/E).

I decided to go on this low-altitude hike because the weather forecast predicted low clouds, but it turned out to be sunny with a few cumulus clouds in the middle of the afternoon, allowing me to admire the surrounding peaks and rivers. It was a lovely hike that gave me a view of the village of Orris, now more or less in ruins, at the foot of the Pic des Trois Seigneurs.
The steepest climb is at the start, but it's in the shade of the forest, which you leave after about 2 km. There are lots of streams along the way. There are some muddy patches between 2 and 3 km, but you can get around them. Still between 2 and 3, when you come to the first ruins, look for the path above these barns (do not go between them, except to take photos...). The real difficulty (if you can call it that) is on the way back, at point 2, where you have to turn south to leave the main path you took on the way there: you have to go through the electric fence, which has been set up (with four insulated handles) to be opened (and closed again after you pass through). Once in the forest, go downhill, following the Fontfrède stream through the undergrowth.
Once you reach the track, after crossing the electric fence again, the rest of the walk is less exciting, but you will come across a few donkeys that have been hired by hikers who want to give their backs a rest!
Recommended (a GPS is useful)

A beautiful hike marked with yellow signs, starting with a steep climb that's great for your calves. The shaded forest trail is very peaceful. Once you reach the mountain pastures with their springs and bogs, you'll be glad you brought your hiking boots and gaiters. When you reach the sign, the path is poorly marked. In clear weather, it's easy to find your way back down to the hamlet, where the table (and dry toilets) are clearly visible, but in foggy weather it could be much more complicated. On the other hand, the return via the track is of little interest, especially as the brand new enclosure no longer offers the possibility of cutting across. This is a hike to do when the peaks are covered, taking the time to linger among the ruins.
