The Créquy Woods

A long route with virtually no roads, based on three short hiking trails: the Maury, the Têtards and the Fréniaux.
It is best to walk this route during a dry period, as the paths can be quite rough in wet weather.
Three-quarters of the walk takes place on the edge of or within the woods.

Description of the walk

Parking opposite Créquy church.

(S/E) Take Rue de l'Église to the D130 and turn left onto the D155 (Rue des Maratiaux) towards Coupelle-Vieille. Ignore Rue de Rulfort on the left and continue to the town exit sign.

(1) Turn left onto an uphill path (barred by large stones). At the three-way junction, turn left onto a wide path (herds on the left) which turns right to reach a T-junction.

(2) Turn left and continue in the same direction (between the wind turbines) to reach the northern tip of the Bois de Créquy. Enter the woods and arrive near the D149.

(3) Just before, at the sign with hiking arrows, turn left into the undergrowth. The path is sometimes wet and joins a small tarmac road (crossing the embankment).

(4) Cross it and take the path through the woods slightly to the left (south-west). Wide at the start, this path becomes a little more difficult towards the end. Keep going in the same direction, pass a hiking signpost and you will reach a wide path.

(5) Turn left, then immediately right (sign prohibiting motor vehicles and hiking post). The trees on the right were felled in 2017 (it is now heathland with some reforestation). Follow the grassy path and stay on the edge. Ignore the wide path coming from the left and continue to the Quatre Sapins crossroads.

(6) Continue straight ahead, between the two woods. Ignore a path coming from the left and, still following the edge of the forest, you will arrive near a wide path.

(7) Continue to the right through the undergrowth and you will soon reach a crossroads (hiking post without arrows at the end of July 2017). Enter the woods via the path on the right, between the hiking post and a path with a barrier. Join a wide path.

(8) Cross this wide path to take the track opposite, which descends northwards. After a left turn, you will reach a wide path.

(9) Follow it to the left (it's now a motorway!) for about 1.5 km. Towards the end, a plot on the left has been cleared and reforested. The deer seem to like it very much!

(10) At the end, turn left and follow the path that leads to the Surgeon springs. At one point, the path disappears under the stream.

  • If there is not too much water, follow the stream on the right (there is a wild path). After a few metres, it descends towards the stream (orange mark on a branch, early May 2025). Ford the stream and continue downhill on the left bank. You will soon find a gap on the left that leads to a relatively good path in early May 2025. Stay on this path and continue to a ford. Cross (hiking stake) and turn left onto a good path.
  • If the stream is very full, head to the field on the right (you will easily find a way through the hedge. Watch out for the barbed wire close to the ground! ) and follow it on the left. At the end of the field, you will find a hiking marker. Continue straight ahead along the stream.

Ignore the wide path that branches off to the right and reach the edge of the field after a passage that may be (very) wet (sign with hiking arrows).

(11) Continue straight ahead downhill towards Royon until you reach a crossroads.

(12) Turn left, pass in front of the church, turn right then left and reach the D 130.

(13) Follow it to the left along the Créquoise and, 200 metres further on, you will find a footbridge on the right.

(14) Cross the Créquoise and follow it on the left. 200 metres further on, a second footbridge takes you back to the D 130. Follow it on the right, and 100 metres further on, you will reach the start of the Têtards trail.

(15) Turn left onto this beautiful uphill path that will take you back to the heights. Turn left, then right and, after passing through the undergrowth, you will reach a T-junction.

(16) Turn left towards the woods. At the edge of the woods, turn right and you will reach a crossroads you passed on the way there.

(7) Leave the main path on the left and retrace your steps to reach another crossroads you passed on the way there.

(6) Then turn right onto a main road. At the three-way junction, turn right and a few metres further on, look for a signpost on the left.

(17) Take the beautiful path on the left that takes you through the Bois des Trois Treillages and back to Créquy. At the first three-way junction, go straight ahead, then whenever there is a choice between two paths, take the left (if in doubt, look for the yellow rectangles).
The ground is grassy at first, then stony: watch your ankles, especially at the end of the walk.
Ignore a path on the left that joins Rue de Rulfort and, after a right turn, you will reach a T-junction.

(18) Turn left, then left again to reach the car park (S/E). (18)

Notes

Describing the routes through the woods is not easy, so any suggestions are welcome.

Do not set off without a map (or better still, the Visorando app; do not forget to cache the route before you leave).
Also make sure you wear suitable clothing and footwear and bring walking sticks.

From (S/E) to (6), follow the Sentier des Fréniaux in the opposite direction.
From (6) to (8), follow the Sentier des Têtards in the opposite direction.
(7) On the way back, you can also go around "les Choux" on the right. See map. It's a little longer, easier to walk, but less wild.
From (8) to (11), follow the Sentier du Maury in the opposite direction.
From (18) to (S/E), follow the Sentier des Têtards in the opposite direction.

Worth a visit

Abundant wildlife (deer, pheasants, birds of prey, etc.) to watch out for.

Superb hike, done in sunny weather. I recommend it for a change of scenery and guaranteed tranquillity. I did it in 6 hours and 5 minutes. To be done again before the end of September.

Almost the entire hike takes place through woods on forest paths, which are very rough and not recommended in wet weather or during winter when the forest is not at its most beautiful. Nevertheless, the walk through the woods is superb and we encountered up to 20 deer.
There are also a few pleasant little climbs, and following the river is also enjoyable.
The route without the Visorando app is not recommended as the markings are not always clear.

Hike completed on 24 May 2020.
I have changed the description slightly.

I recommend the short version (see practical information), which is wilder. It corresponds to the hunting variant, the route of which has been slightly changed without being "re-marked". The old route has completely disappeared under the vegetation. I followed it two years ago, through brambles and nettles, happy to find yellow markings from time to time. But it ended in an impassable bramble patch.

On the way back, following Michel's advice, after the (15), I joined the (8) to take the wide path on the right.
It is a very wide, straight path with dips and bumps, which I found a little monotonous. So I took the path on the right (before the place called "le Grand Champ") to get back to the normal route.

It should be noted that the app allows you to take many paths through the woods, but it is not clear whether all of them are authorised.

That's a good idea, but I'm not sure if all the paths in the woods are authorised.

And then we lose the passage from 7 to 9, which I really like.

I'll give it a try next time I'm in the area.

Superb hike with less than a kilometre of tarmac: almost 100% trail.
To avoid going back and forth between points 6 and 7, you can take the path marked with a yellow cross just before point 6, which leads perpendicularly into the forest. At the second crossroads, take the large carriageway on the left to reach point 10.

At the end of July, I walked along the Surgeon's bed: it was completely dry! But it's a beautiful path, a little crowded at times, but very pleasant.

I went to Créquy Woods on 30 July.
I took the opportunity to add some details to the description.

Apart from the hunting detour, the paths are very good, a little muddy in places after the rain on the 28th.

An interesting hike on Sunday, 2 September 2018. 22 km without paved roads, which is rare in this region. Some parts are quite wild. The hike took 4 hours and 40 minutes without breaks. Be sure to wear good shoes. Some areas are cluttered with tree stumps.

Great route, 22 km in total, about 1.5 km of tarmac. A bit tricky at point 7, but as they were cutting down trees, there were quite a few branches getting in the way. But I quickly found my way again.
I think the route must be difficult in rainy weather.
I didn't see any deer (only their tracks), but I did see buzzards, goldfinches and finches.
I'd love to go back to see a bit more of the coppice.
Thank you for this hike.

A very pleasant walk, my congratulations to its creator.
I look forward to seeing others of the same length in this area of "Frugeois".
