From La Planquette to Bois de Fressin

A succession of small roads and paths for a day in the great outdoors.
The icing on the cake: a good elevation gain with a superb climb in the Bois de Fressin.

For very experienced hikers, I highly recommend the alternative route described in the practical information section.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Fressin, car park at the edge of La Planquette, at the junction of Grand Rue and Rue du Mont Hulain.

(S/E) Take the small staircase leading to Rue du Mont Hulain, turn left, then immediately right onto the D154 (Rue de Planques). 200 m further on, turn right towards the footbridge over the Planquette (witch statue). The grassy path leads to a small road which you follow to the right. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead into Rue du Marais.

(1) At the T-junction, turn left (Rue de l'Enfer). When the road turns right, leave it and take the path that climbs opposite. It joins a good path, which you follow to the right.

(2) Turn onto thesecond path on the right (be careful, this path is not very visible; here, the map is inaccurate at 1:25,000 but is accurate when zoomed in further). It turns left and heads towards the edge of the woods. Join a small road and follow it straight ahead. Ignore the small road coming from the right and take thefirst road on the left to follow the edge of the woods.

(3) At the crossroads after the woods, turn left and climb for a good kilometre to Les Argillettes (elevation 103).

(4) Take the hairpin bend on the right to finish the ascent of Mont Miracle. Then descend. Ignore the path on the right and reach a crossroads.

(5) Turn right (it is signposted) to descend a beautiful vaulted path. Reach a crossroads. Follow the small road on the left. Pass a crossroads (Chapel) and reach the D 106. Follow it to the right and reach a crossroads. Take the D154 on the left. 200 m further on, turn right and head for La Planquette.

(6) Cross it and then walk along it on the left. Atthe first crossroads, continue straight ahead. Towards the end, I recommend leaving the wide path (shortly after a footbridge) to follow the path that runs alongside the river. You will then arrive near an old mill. A footbridge will take you back to the wide path.

(7) At thesecond crossroads, turn right onto Rue du Presbytère (you are now in Cavron-Saint-Martin). Keep going in the same direction (north) and climb for about 1.5 km until you reach a T-junction. Turn right and you will reach the D108.

(8) Follow it to the right for 250 m. Take a good path on the left (Vallée aux Crapauds) and, after 150 m, turn right (see practical information) to reach the church of Wambercourt. Keep going in the same direction to reach the D154 (chapel).

(9) Follow it for 100 m on the left, then turn left onto a small road (Rue de Lebiez) and climb for about 2 km. You will arrive near a reservoir (horrible, but what a landmark!). Make a sharp right turn.

(10) After a few metres, turn right onto a pretty path (the first few metres are a little steep). Stay on this generally well-maintained path, marked with yellow and mountain bike signs, for about 1 km (nice hollow path on the left). Reach a path and follow it straight ahead (towards the woods) to reach a T-junction at the edge of the Bois de Fressin (signposted and explanatory sign).

(11) Turn left, then immediately right to enter the woods (metal barrier). You will come to a wide uphill path. You now have a choice:

- The easiest option is to take this path: the slope is steady and not too difficult. At the top, turn right to continue along the edge of the forest (PR® and mountain bike markings).

- For the more adventurous (and daring), look for mountain bike markings on a tree at the foot of the hill, inviting you to turn right (August 2024: I have cleared the area, the entrance is clear). Follow them to reach a narrow, clearly marked path along the edge of the forest (this is the old marked trail). This path is quickly blocked by two fallen trees that are easy to pass, then a third that you go around on the right to find the path again. After about 300 metres of flat ground, you will come to a steep slope. It is blocked by two tree trunks (one in the middle and one at the top). The first is easy to get past, but the second is a little more difficult. At the top, turn right to stay on the edge of the forest.

From there, follow the excellent yellow markings. The path is uneven but in good condition and well marked. You will reach a crossroads of Promenade and Randonnée paths (barrier and signpost).

(12) Leave the Planquette trail (which continues opposite towards a barrier and the D108) and turn left onto the Chevrette trail. Staying on the edge of the forest, pass above the ruins of Fressin Castle before crossing a metal barrier and then a junction (note that the PR® route on the IGN map is incorrect in this section).

(13) Turn left towards the house. Then take the path (to the right of the two-headed dog) that seems to lead into the garden (it is still marked in yellow). Stay on the edge of the forest. After about 1 km, you will reach a small road which you follow to the left until you reach a crossroads.

(14) Turn right, then immediately right into Petite Rue Haute, which quickly turns into a good path. At the crossroads, turn right into Rue Noire, which quickly turns into a grassy path. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead towards the church and the D 154. Follow it to the left (passing in front of a large bottle) to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Needless to say, good equipment is essential.

Very pleasant in dry weather, much more difficult otherwise.

I relied on the Argilettes GRP® (from (3) to (5), and especially from (9) to (12)), which is very well marked and maintained, and on the Chevrettes GRP® from (12) to (14), which now seems to be well maintained (it has even been re-marked).

Possible shortcut at (4) to make it only about fifteen kilometres: take the opposite direction, turn right onto the D154 and 100 metres further on, turn right onto the path. Cross the footbridge over the Planquette (table) and head for the church. Then turn right to reach (7).

At the end of April 2025, the entrance to the hollow was blocked by large boulders, so I decided not to go in... For more adventure: you can follow the Vallée des Crapauds to the edge of the woods, where you will find a hollow path on the right that is not too deep (there is a burnt-out car at the start! Stupidity is everywhere. It descends over flint rocks to the church of Wambercourt. Difficult, but very grassy in places and tricky for your ankles. August 2024, very dry ravine, but with quite a few branches and tree trunks. A large pile of trees in the middle, which can be easily bypassed on the right. It's passable, but you need to take your time and be very careful.
The exit path is fairly clean, but a little damp.

Worth a visit

Fressin "castle".
Beautiful route on the edge of the woods.

A very beautiful and varied hike. The undergrowth is magnificent with its tunnels of vegetation. The route is very well detailed and the map is accurate, although in a few places I had to read the stage details to find the right path. A must-do!

In the last century, there was a path connecting the church in Wambercourt to Rue de Lebiez (still visible on IGN maps).
I took it a few years ago, but it is very congested and there was a pile of rubbish right in the middle: I got through, but it was borderline dangerous.

Attila, my old walking stick, and my magic saw had cleared the Ravin aux Crapauds (Toad Ravine) a little in August. Effective!

I also got a hug from a revered pheasant, but on the Bois de Fressin variant. The massacre of the innocents can begin!

There is a second, slightly longer route in Fressin that I also like.

Hello Joorange,

I did this route on 9 September 2020, almost exactly four years ago, and I still don't understand why I didn't leave a review at the time! Maybe I didn't want too many people to come and hike there? 🤭

It's thanks to Denis that I wanted to come back, and I can only thank him for that! Of all the routes I've done in Pas-de-Calais, this is the most enjoyable. No paths overgrown with brambles, just a few nettles and a few puddles at the exit of the Vallée aux Crapauds (Toad Valley), it's simply exceptional!

Speaking of the Vallée aux Crapauds, I didn't find any obstacles there. There are some fallen trees in the last third of the valley, but they are so high that you don't even need to bend down. Only the entrance is a little cluttered, but you can easily access it by following the edge of the field for a few metres.

In the Bois de Fressin, I didn't take the alternative route you described in August 2024. My attention was caught by a pheasant, which accompanied me for a good hundred metres! 😅

The only part I don't particularly enjoy is the long climb from Wambercourt because it's on tarmac, but otherwise it's one of the most beautiful walks in the region that I know. Anyone who's interested can also find more details on my blog https://nomdunrandonneur.com/2020/09/09-... As Denis mentions, the only change is that the view of the castle is blocked by vegetation.

Thanks again for this wonderful suggestion, Joorange!

It's one of my favourite walks, although I must admit you have to be a bit crazy to take the Vallée des Crapauds and the edge of the Bois de Fressin.

As for the castle, there's not much left of it!

Hello Joorange,

Took the route yesterday (Sunday, 15/09/2024) in ideal weather conditions.
A beautiful route, very varied with superb views.
I really enjoyed myself and didn't notice the time or the kilometres passing by, it was so pleasant.
Walking along La Planquette was a moment of pure happiness and well-being...
Of course, I went through the Vallée aux Crapauds, which requires a lot of caution for your ankles and reminded me of the atmosphere of a certain Ravin des Cavernes that I discovered a year ago, also thanks to you
The Sente on the edge of the Bois de Fressin is superb and gives you a good cardio workout thanks to the nice climb after the barrier
I thought I would have a view of the back of the castle, but the vegetation is so dense that you can't see anything at all...

The icing on the cake is that I recorded an elevation gain of around 450 metres, which is always nice!

In any case, it's a great route, so a big thank you to Joorange for sharing it.

A beautiful region, a varied hike and, despite its length, fairly straightforward.

Yes, sublime, you're right, it looks like a landscape in the Gard region.
My wife spent some time taking several photos of all these beautiful things.

It's a path that reminds me of certain trails in the Gard and Ardèche regions. It's a real change of scenery.

I still wonder how they managed to get a car to this place. It just goes to show how inventive people can be!

I have added a small clarification to the description for point 3.

Did you take the Toad Valley route?

The climb just after the picnic must have been a bit hard to digest?

As for the tarmac section, I've already tried several alternatives, but none of them are comfortable.

There used to be a nice path starting from the church in Wambercourt (it's still on the IGN map) that allowed you to cut across the tarmac a little. I took it recently. It's still visible (especially with the app), but you come across a pile of rubble that I had trouble climbing over (but I'm stubborn), then a barrier that's easy to get over. I will try again when I get the chance (and when it's dry) because it may be possible to turn left before the rubble to find a good path.

Yes, go through the valley of the toads. A sublime passage (except for the car wreck).

A very beautiful route, recommended in dry weather.
Perhaps a little less easy to follow than on an IGN map, but with the explanations it's fine. (We made a mistake at point 3, where we turned onto the path towards the woods, when it was actually the next path).
It's probably difficult to avoid, but the 2 km of tarmac on Rue De Lebiez between points 9 and 10 seem very long... You quickly forget about it because the rest of the route is pleasant, with small paths and woods, ideal for the afternoon, especially when it's hot!
I had a picnic near point 11, after the metal barrier, which was after four hours of walking for me.
Tip: you can fill up with water at the churches in Wambercourt and Fressin towards the end.
Total: 6 hours in all, or about 5 hours of walking. A recommended route, ideal in good weather. Thanks to Joorange for this route.

For those who wish to picnic along the way, at point No. 7, cross the bridge on the left and immediately turn right onto a beautiful little path along the Planquette. At the road, turn left then right to reach the café "Le Diplomate" (03 21 86 07 88) where you will be warmly welcomed by MARIE Sylvie. This adds barely a kilometre to the hike.

A very beautiful route with stunning scenery.
I particularly enjoyed the sections near La Planquette.
Some really nice hills, especially the one at point 16 (entering the woods), which really surprised me.

Thank you, Joorange, for this route. I'll try it in the autumn to see how difficult it is.

A very beautiful route taken on 23 April 2018 in dry weather. We really enjoyed this route and chose the "valley of the toads" option. The path had been washed out by previous rains, so we walked on flint! But with the right equipment, it's no problem and it's great. There is indeed an XXL climb (a wall) in the Fressin woods.
The route alternates between small tarmac roads, stony paths, grassy paths and trails. It is hilly, with a nice variety of terrain!
The elevation gain must actually be greater than that stated on the website! (approximately 560m)
