The Cologne Trail

The long-distance hiking trail opens up the Königsforst, the southern Bergisches Land, leads through the Westerwald to the monasteries of Marienthal and Marienstatt and into the Kroppacher Schweiz, one of the most charming areas of the Westerwald. We hike through Hachenburg and the Hoher Westerwald and reach the highest point of the Cologne Trail at 567 metres on the Marienberger Höhe. An impressive basalt park near Bad Marienberg and the Stöffel Tertiary Industry Adventure Park near Stockum-Püschen explain the importance of basalt mining. We will be transported to the unique cultural landscape of the Westerwald Lake District near Dreifelden and pass through Metteshahner Schweiz to Neustadt (Wied). On the last section, we will hike to the Drachenfels and Königswinter.

   Kölner Weg - Stage 1 - Rath-Heumar through the Königsforst to Rösrath-Sülze

   15.38 km 180 m 147 m

   Königsforst is the name of the stop where tram line 9 ends in Cologne-Rath-Heumar, and this is where the Cologne Trail begins. The markings for the Cologne Trail, a white K on a black mirror, which we see for the first time at this point, will guide us safely through the southern Bergisches Land and the Westerwald for 253 kilometres to Königswinter. We first stroll through a park-like landscape, then through unspoilt forest. On wide, gently ascending paths, we pass a water treading pool, the Kaisereiche oak tree and cross the former Bensberg-Rösrath railway line, hiking through the quiet Wahlbach valley until we reach Lehmbach and Sülze via the Tütberg.

   Kölner Weg - Stage 2 - From the Sülztal valley via the Lüderich to Kreuznaaf

   We hike along beautiful paths over the Lüderich, which has an eventful mining history, pass the winding tower of the Franziska shaft and skirt Hoffnungsthal. Later, we pass a grain distillery in Hofferhof, hike through the valley of the Kupfersiefer Bach and reach a viewpoint behind Oberschönrath with a view of the Cologne Bay and the Siebengebirge mountains. Via the Gammersbacher Mühle mill and the picturesque half-timbered village of Muchensiefen, we reach Kreuznaaf on the Naafbach stream.

   Kölner Weg - Stage 3 - From the Agger through the Naafbach Valley to Winterscheid

   This route first takes us into the dreamy Naafbach Valley. On ascending paths, we cross Deesem, enter a large forest area, hike to the Wahnbach and reach Neunkirchen. There, the Church of St. Margareta is worth a visit. Via Ingersau, we reach the Bröltal valley. Behind Winterscheiderbröl, we tackle another strenuous climb before arriving at St. Servatius Church in Winterscheid.

   Kölner Weg – Stage 4 – Via Nutscheid to Herchen/Sieg

   17.30 km 244 m 365 m

   This section of the Cologne Trail differs significantly from the previous sections. In Winterscheid, we reach the heights of the Nutscheid and only have one climb to tackle before reaching Altenherfen. We walk along wide forest paths and enjoy magnificent views of the mountains beyond the Siegtal valley, the Westerwald and the Siebengebirge mountains. Only after Altenherfen does the Cologne Trail descend into the valley, before we have to climb steeply again behind Rieferath. Our varied hike ends in Herchen, a climatic health resort in one of the most beautiful spots in the Siegtal valley.

   Kölner Weg - Stage 5 - From the Siegtal valley to the Leuscheid ridge

   10.11 km 383 m 174 m

   On this hike, we leave Herchen on the Höhenweg trail above Siegtalstraße. On narrow paths and through deep gorges, over narrow bridges and through numerous hairpin bends, we hike high above the Sieg to Herchen railway station. Here we cross the Sieg and climb uphill again. Soon we find ourselves high above the river again. We have to tackle another steep climb before we reach Schneppe. On the way to Kuchhausen, we can make a detour to an impressive basalt crater. The hike ends in Leuscheid.

   Kölner Weg – Stage 6 – Leuscheid, the Beulskopf and Marienthal Monastery

   14.02 km 291 m 343 m

   The section between Leuscheid and Marienthal Monastery offers many highlights. We hike through a hilly landscape on a wide, tree-lined path. Again and again, new and surprising views open up before us. Behind Ehrentalsmühle, we have a slightly longer climb through the forest to Ückertseifen, but we are rewarded for our efforts with a view of the Hammer Ländchen. Passing the Wunderbuche (miracle beech) near Birkenbeul, we finally climb the Beulskopf with the Raiffeisen Tower. Along the edge of the forest, we pass Hilgenroth, reach another beautiful forest and finally Marienthal with its former monastery.

   Kölner Weg – Stage 7 – Nister, Kroppacher Schweiz to Heimborn

   12.98 km 318 m 341 m

   This exceptionally varied hike first takes us through meadows, pastures and forests to the Nister, a small tributary of the Sieg. At Alhausen, a village with beautiful half-timbered houses, we cross the Nister and continue above the river on wonderful narrow paths to Heimborn. This is one of the most picturesque sections of the entire Cologne Trail.

   Kölner Weg – Stage 8 – Nistertal to Marienstatt Monastery and Hachenburg

   13.27 km 278 m 163 m

   There is hardly a more unspoilt and picturesque section along the Nister than the stretch between Heimborn and Hachenburg. At Heimborn, the Kleine Nister flows into the Nister. This is one of the most charming spots in the Westerwald. The Nister, which has carved its way deep into the north-eastern part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, has formed steep and unusual rock formations, such as the Hohe Ley, together with mountain folds. Since the Middle Ages, the Nister Valley with the Marienstatt monastery has been a Christian centre and boasts a special gem: the oldest Gothic church on the right bank of the Rhine in Germany.

   Kölner Weg - Stage 9 - Old town of Hachenburg and city forest to Unnau-Korb

   13.53 km 184 m 239 m

   The medieval long-distance roads from Cologne to Leipzig and Cologne to Frankfurt, as well as the iron road from the Siegerland region, already met in Hachenburg during the Carolingian period. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa advised Count Henry II of Sayn to build a defensive structure with a fortification wall to secure the trade routes. In 1314, Emperor Louis the Bavarian granted Hachenburg town rights. Hachenburg's Old Market Square is considered the most beautiful market square in the Westerwald. After a long walk through the historic old town and a visit to the Landscape Museum, we hike through the Hachenburg Forest to the Nister and on to Unnau-Korb.

    Kölner Weg – Stage 10 – Großer Wolfstein, Basaltpark to Bad Marienberg

    We walk past former mines and collieries and reach the Hoher Westerwald. At the Großer Wolfstein, we come across a legendary rock formation and then reach the highest point of the entire Cologne Trail at 567 metres on the Marienberger Höhe. Later, we come to the Marienberg Wildlife Park and the Hedwigsturm tower with its magnificent view. Shortly afterwards, we reach a stone nature trail and, a little later, the impressive Basalt Park.

    Kölner Weg - Stage 11 - Stöffel Park, Rotenhain and Dreifelden

    We walk through Bad Marienberg, cross the Schwarze Nister and later, at Langenbach, cross the Nister for the last time, pass the Götzenberg and arrive at Stöffel Park in Stockum-Püschen. Just outside Rotenhain, it is worth visiting the excavation site of the Alte Burg (old castle). We then walk past the Vierherrenstein (Four Lords' Stone) through extensive woodland to Dreifelden.

    Kölner Weg – Stage 12 – Westerwald Lake District to Maxsain and Selters

    The Westerwald Lake District is an undulating plateau between the mountains of the Hachenburg and Höchstenbach forests in the north and the Saynbach valley in the south. The Cologne Trail runs almost all the way around the Dreifelder Weiher and leads through a densely wooded landscape to the Haiden, Brinken and Postweiher lakes. We continue our hike to Maxsain, pass a beautiful half-timbered house and finally head for Selters.

    Kölner Weg – Stage 13 – From Selters via Sessenhausen to Dierdorf

    The stage takes us behind Selters to the "Hahn" hill and the "Wacht" viewpoint, where we come across a Stone Age site. Later, we reach the old Jewish cemetery of Selters and learn why many inhabitants of Sessenhausen were "Landgänger" (people who left the land), pass a biotope at the Holzbach stream and reach Dierdorf through a magnificent beech forest.

    Kölner Weg - Stage 14 - Märkerwald, Grenzbachtal and Grenzbach-Mühle

    The hike goes through the Märkerwald forest, past the Max and Moritz oak trees to Dernbach, then through meadows and fields to Urbach, a village with a church reminiscent of the Palatine Chapel in Aachen. Behind Urbach, a beautiful beech forest welcomes us. We reach Linkenbach, whose main street is named after the path that runs through the village: the Kölner Weg. Through the Linkenbach Valley, we reach the Grenzbachtal and the Grenzbach Mill.

    Kölner Weg – Stage 15 – Grenzbach, Ehrenstein Monastery, Neustadt/Wied

    This route is also one of the highlights of the Cologne Trail. From the Grenzbachtal valley, we climb up to Horhausen and reach two former mines, the Otto-Stollen and the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Grube, near Niedersteinebach. Later, above Niedersteinebach, we reach a wonderful vantage point and hike through forests past a "legendary" oak tree to Peterslahr. We visit Ehrenstein Monastery, cross the Wied, pass through the Metteshahner Schweiz, reach the Bertenauer Kopf and finally arrive in Neustadt.

    Kölner Weg - Stage 16 - Along the Wied and Pfaffenbach Valley to Rottbitze

    The penultimate section of the Cologne Trail initially runs along a wildly romantic section high above the Wied, then along the former Linz-Neustadt railway line. We climb uphill through a deciduous forest to Rüddel, where we can enjoy a beautiful view. Later, we hike steeply down to Hammerhof and continue through the Pfaffenbach valley. Following the Windhagenerbach stream, we reach Windhagen with its beautiful St. Bartholomäus church. The hike ends in Rottbitze.

    Kölner Weg - Stage 17 - Rottbitze, Siebengebirge, Drachenfels, Königswinter

    The last stage of the Cologne Trail will remain unforgettable for many hikers. On its long journey from Cologne through the Bergisches Land and the Westerwald, the Cologne Trail leads to Himmerich, which offers wonderful views. After that, the trail approaches its last and perhaps most beautiful sections. We wander along beautiful forest paths through the Siebengebirge and can make a detour to the Löwenburg. Finally, we visit the Drachenfels and hike through the famous Nachtigallental valley to Königswinter.
