Varize (Moselle) walks

On1 May 1988, the “Marie Dubois” walk was inaugurated. This walk “for freedom and tolerance” aims to revive the route taken by Protestants from the Metz region between 1685 and 1789 to attend services in Ludweiler (Saarland). We cover only a short section of these paths through the forests of Landonvillers and Courcelles-Chaussy.

The walk starts in Glatigny, a village "cursed" for Jews following a false accusation of murder of a Jewish merchant on a 3-year-old child in 1669. The latter was rehabilitated in 2009 with the installation of a commemorative plaque: it took 340 years for the village to restore dialogue and respect between the different faithsThis route then passes through the Lorraine villages of Cheuby, Sainte-Barbe, Gras and Retonfey, where you can admire farms, castles, calvaries and wash houses.

A very pleasant walk along the route of an old railway line that was used to supply the Maginot Line fortifications further east.

A short, gentle walk on flat terrain on the Metz-Courcelles-Chaussy plateau.

All along the Saint-Hubert Canyon, which climbs towards the forest, you can admire beech trees clinging to the rock faces. One of these beech trees received the jury prize in the 2022 remarkable trees competition.

A circuit in the heart of nature where, according to legend, Charlemagne made a spring gush forth from under his horse's hoof and then built a chapel on the site of the current Rabas chapel.

An ideal family walk for beginners to hiking in the deep Villers Bettnach State Forest, following in the footsteps of the Cistercian monks.

A short walk in a site not to be missed. You will walk in the footsteps of the Queulots who, in the Middle Ages, frightened the inhabitants with their sticks coated in manure.

After a stroll along the banks of the "Ruisseau de Quarante" and through a small valley of wild beauty, this short route invites you to discover a typical Lorraine linear village, Servigny-lès-Sainte-Barbe, which has successfully preserved its exceptional built heritage.

Circular route through fields that passes close to the old railway line (partly destroyed and partly underground – disused tunnel near Nouilly) and can be completed with a visit to the site of the old station in Nouilly, now converted for private use.

Short walk around Vantoux, Mey and Vallières. This short, easy route does not go through any forests, making it pleasant to do in winter when you are looking for some sunshine. It will take you to Mey Church and the Vallières wash house.

A magnificent hike in the La Houve forest, accessible to the whole family. Passing through Merten, La Ferme aux Cloches, the Miners' Trail, the Oak of the Cats, the fountain, the statue of Saint Christopher, Falck, the water tower and arrival at the car park.

Short hike suitable for children to discover the Petit Étang and Grand Étang lakes. You can observe the flora and fauna... birds of prey, herons, muskrats, frogs, ducks, Egyptian geese, swans, cuckoos, deer... depending on the time of day and the season... there's something for everyone.

This short, easy walk starts in Saint-Julien-lès-Metz and takes you through the green spaces on the western edge of Metz. Following the Ruisseau de Vallières stream, you will pass through the Vallières and Corchade neighbourhoods before arriving at the bucolic village of Vantoux. After visiting the 12th-century church in Mey and its traditional village, you will return to Saint-Julien-lès-Metz through fields with beautiful views of the Metz metropolitan area.

Circular passing along the Saint-Rémy ponds, the La Maxe greenhouses and the EDF thermal power plant.

Starting from the beautiful central station, you will pass through Gallo-Roman Metz, Medieval Metz, Royal Metz, Imperial Metz and 21st-century Metz. You will discover Saint-Étienne Cathedral and its 6,000 m² of stained glass windows. The Musée de la Cour d'Or with its Gallo-Roman baths in situ. You will discover Metz as you have never seen it before and as I love it.

Between the canal and the Moselle, today's route is a short 3 km circular. There is a car park right next to the starting point, which is convenient. You can always extend the hike by continuing along the canal, either north or south. This towpath offers many kilometres of safe walking.

This hike takes you along the iron mine canal. It is marked in red and is not difficult. The 1-kilometre variant is between points 2 and 3, around the Mancourt pond, where there are two signposts.

Route along the Moselle canals.This easy, popular walk will take you along the canal and the Moselle, passing by the Argancy dam, then back via Ennery and Ay-sur-Moselle, along the Moselle.

Walk on the limestone plateau of the Côte de Delme, between the north (Juville) and south (Puzieux) orientation tables, passing by the Juville quarry. You will discover many views of the Seille valley.

This route mainly follows paths through fields and, as you walk, reveals magnificent panoramic views of the Saulnois region. Its highlight is the discovery of Mont des Saints, a site undergoing transformation where a series of monumental statues is gradually being erected. Launched in 2023, this ambitious project is led by sculptor Michel Dardaine, whose expertise is bringing the first Lorraine figures to life. The project is a long-term undertaking that will span several decades, offering visitors the pleasure of seeing the site evolve over the years. When you reach the summit, where the route passes, take the time to enjoy an exceptional 360° view, opening onto vast, luminous and particularly photogenic landscapes.
