The Fort aux Fresques

Maginot Line Fort A24, known as the “Fort aux Fresques”, consists of an entrance block and three combat blocks. Its uniqueness lies in the various humorous murals depicting the life of a fortress crew, as well as the mottos and names of the different underground galleries.
There is a single departure time for tours: please arrive 10 minutes before departure.

Description of the walk

Park in Rue de l'Ombre in Hestroff.

(S/E) Start at No. 3 Rue de l'Ombre and follow the numbers in descending order. At the junction, turn sharply right into Rue Principale. Then take the first street on the left. At the fork, take the path on the right (leaving the house at No. 13 on your left). You will reach a crossroads with a wayside shrine.

(1) Continue straight on, passing the water tank on the left and following the path. Enter the forest, continue due west, then turn due south and further on reach a new crossroads at a place called Red Cross.

(2) Then turn left (north-east). Continue through the forest along a path running parallel to the previous one. You will come to a wide track, pass some blockhouses and return to the crossroads with the wayside cross.

(1) Continue straight on, go down the Chemin du Château d'eau, pass the cemetery and the church; at the junction of the Chemin du Château d'eau and Rue des Noyers, turn right and then immediately left.

(3) Follow the yellowPR® markings. Join Rue de la Forêt. A pleasant walk through the woods and past the blockhouses. Observing the fortifications along the path will help you understand the explanations during your visit to the fort.

(4) Complete the circular tour of the fortifications to reach Fort aux Fresques. The tour is superb. There is a sheltered area with tables and benches where you can eat; ask the volunteers at the fort for permission – they are very friendly and also sell beer.

(5) Take the track to reach Rue de la Forêt. Turn left and return to the junction of the path you took earlier.

Follow the same route back to the junction with Rue des Noyers.

(3) Turn right, walk past the school before returning to the car park where you started (S/E).

Hello
I agree with the other hikers. The path from 4 to the road, heading towards 5, does not exist. Thank you for correcting the map so quickly.
For the second section at point (1), it might be worth amending it to: continue straight ahead, go down the path to the water tower, turn right into Rue des Noyers. After 30 metres, turn left into Rue de France. Join Rue de la Forêt.
A pleasant walk through the woods and past the bunkers after the picnic area until you return to the road;

I agree with another hiker from 25 May. The path from 4 to the road, heading towards 5, doesn’t exist. It’s a maize field.
If you want to do the reverse, from 5 to 4, starting from the road, there is no longer an entrance to the forest.

I couldn’t find the path from 4 to 5. Perhaps it’s been blocked off by fields and/or a horse paddock. We carried on along the road until we joined the route on the right towards point 5
It’s quiet due to Covid-19 and the closure of the Fort aux Fresques. Otherwise, I’m not sure.
There is, however, a marked path around the Fort aux Fresques which might be used (from 5 to 6).
Thank you for this website

Thank you.
It’s a shame you didn’t visit the fort – it’s really interesting and the tour guides are brilliant. Maybe next time. Have a good hike.

A lovely little walk (we only did the circular loop as the weather was turning...).
No difficulty, just follow the main path through the forest (except for the right-hand bend at "2").
Note: to reach “1” when leaving the main road (D55), you must immediately take a small path to the right of a house, which is hard to spot at first glance...
Thanks Patleloup!!

A walk through the woods... best done in summer if you’re visiting the fort

Hello, thank you for your valid point; I have therefore amended the first part in line with your comments.
As for the second part, I don’t turn; I carry on straight ahead until I reach the wayside shrine.
Have you visited the Fort?
Yours, a fellow hiker.

Hello,

Having completed this walk this morning, we encountered a few difficulties at the start of the route.

It might be worth amending:

S/E) Start at No. 3 Rue de l'Ombre. Head towards the
, walk up it, turn left at the first junction and then
take the small vineyard path to reach the junction
marked by a wayside cross.

to:

S/E) Start at No. 3 Rue de l'Ombre. Head towards the
main street, follow it up, turn left at the first junction, then
take the first street on the left to reach the crossroads
marked by a wayside cross.

And I think there’s a typo at the start of part 1:
(1) Continue straight ahead, pass the water tank on the left and follow the
path...

whereas it should read

(1) Turn right, pass the water tank on the left and follow the
path...

In any case, thank you for this route.

Best regards.
