Ponthoile walks

This short walk of just under 6 km in and around Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is full of charm with its fishermen's streets lined with decorated and flower-filled houses, its sailors' calvary with views of the entire bay and the town, its quays along the Somme and its Saint-Valery Chapel, known as the Sailors' Chapel, not to mention its history with the Porte Jeanne d'Arc and numerous views of the Bay of Somme

From Port du Hourdel, there is a coastal route that returns along the ponds and passes by the Maison des Oiseaux. Important note from one of our friends: please note that parking at Le Hourdel is subject to a charge, even in low season. However, the car park located between (3) and (4) was free when we went on our walk. It was therefore possible to start the walk from this new starting point.

This 20 km circuit between Abbeville and Saint-Riquier takes you to the Monflières Chapel, then the Scardon Valley, seen from above, before returning via the Traverse du Ponthieu.

If you want to go for a walk with the option of a dip in the sea halfway along the route, this is just what you need!

Walk in the heart of Le Hâble d'Ault, where it is advisable to bring a pair of binoculars to observe the birds.

This hike, which is not particularly difficult, allows you to discover the cliffs of Ault and Onival beach to the north from the panoramic view of the Bois de Cise. Moderator's warning: Report of restricted access (January 2021) following a landslide on the cliff.

A feeling of the beginning of the world on this immense beach on the Opal Coast.Get there by bus, then on foot via the GR®120. A real treat.

This walk allows you to discover the Authie valley on the east side. We pass by the old Auxi-le-Château railway station, which is a fine example of the restoration and conversion of existing heritage. Also worth noting is the small military cemetery, which reminds us of the horrors of war. Finally, enjoy the superb views of the valley and the charming town of Auxi.

This hike through hills and valleys allows you to discover the three "Heritage Villages" surrounding Auxi-le-Château. It offers a variety of landscapes that testify to the inhabitants' attachment to their heritage and respect for diversity.

This loop allows you to discover the banks of the Authie and its marshes before leaving the valley and climbing up to the plateau. It finally skirts around the Pâture Mille Trous nature reserve. There is a beautiful view of Auxi-le-Château and its 15th-century listed church.

A bucolic hike along the pure, fish-filled waters of the Canche, starting at La Citadelle, whose Royal Castle dates back to the 13th century. You'll start by walking along the ramparts. You'll pass through the marshes and stroll along the banks of La Canche. You may come across fishermen or sportsmen training at the Canoe-Kayak club.

A lovely walk to discover the beautiful villas of Mers-les-Bains. Pass through the marshes before discovering Eu and its castle. A beautiful climb to the Chapelle Saint-Laurent to discover the Bois de Cise. Please note that the return route along the cliffs following thePR® trail, which offers beautiful views of the coast, is closed by municipal decree following recent cliff collapses. By keeping well to the left of the path, it is still possible to enjoy the views.

A short walk when you don't have time to go too far.

Come and discover the rich flora, fauna and history surrounding the Chartreuse de Neuville, one of the largest Carthusian monasteries in France. Come and take a stroll in the Stella dunes, a very fragile Natura 2000 listed natural environment, to be explored with respect. Most of this trail is covered in sand. You'll discover three types of dunes (embryo, white and grey), with lovely panoramic views from the top. You'll walk alongside the sea and discover Bois Joly. A very fine hike, albeit a little physically demanding.

This nearly roadless route takes in the wild Ravin des Cavernes and the astonishing moorland of Nœux-lès-Auxi (le Rietz). Le Rietz de Nœux is a protected nature reserve. In spring, it's home to the most beautiful orchids. Goes without saying, don't pick them! This circuit takes up a large part of the "Sentier de l'Étoile" (Path of the Star), of which there are a few routes, but no description. What's more, there are very few markings. The gates are near the fence on the right. Before tackling this route, I advise you to watch the 2 videos linked in Denis' commentary.

A very hilly route over the Artois heights. A great sporting outing with beautiful scenery.

Easy hike in two loops, discovering the Baie de la Canche and its nature reserve, through dune woods with lovely views over the bay and Le Touquet in the first part, then through marshes and the bay, with access to the beach. Return through a wild cherry wood.

A very pretty tour around the villages of Beussent, Montcavrel and Enquin-sur-Baillon. Very varied landscapes with small roads and farm tracks. An easy but challenging hike. You will have the chance to see different aspects of the Course valley, with its cress farms still in operation. Pleasant picnic stop in Enquin sur Baillon (shaded table) or Beussent, near the river. The departure point is Enquinehaut because the descent to the Course is splendid. You will see pretty lost valleys.

A short but fairly strenuous route with a steep hill and some very grassy paths. On 12/08/2025: the start of the trail is once again very overgrown (brambles and nettles). It's passable but it's best to wear trousers or good gaiters and, of course, bring a walking stick or even a pair of secateurs.

It's a route that will delight altitude enthusiasts (Carto exploreur and the Visorando app suggest it's as high as 500m). What's more, the views are stunning. Route slightly modified in November 2019. All trails are very good as of May 14, 2020 (even if some are very grassy).
