Circular route between Pont à Cailloux and Madelon de l’Authie

A nature walk in the Baie d’Authie. You’ll pass a few hunting blinds. The path is easy to follow and is often lined with a hedge full of birdsong. You’ll frequently come close to the Authie and its meandering course.

Description of the walk

Park at the side of the small road leading down from the D940.

(S/E) About thirty metres from the bridge over the Authie, you will find the starting point: the wide path that heads north-west along the Authie. Follow it, ignoring all the paths coming in from the right.

GR®120 marked in white and red

(1) On arrival at La Madelon de l’Authie, a small, quiet marina, take the small road on the right. It is very quiet. Follow it for 400 m until you reach a T-junction

(2) Ignore the road branching off to the left and take the wide path to the right. GR® markings appear from time to time, but are not always easy to spot. Never mind, the path is clear and easy to follow.

(3) At the Y-junction, continue to the right and follow it for 350 m until you reach a T-junction

(4) Leave the path on the left and follow the wide path on the right.

(5) Continue to the right and go round a pond, one of the many hunting ponds in the area.

(6) Ignore the small path branching off to the left and continue along the GR® which, after a section shaded by the canopy, leads onto the D940.

(7) Turn right onto it for a few dozen metres, keeping to the right-hand side. Shortly afterwards, take a small road branching off to the right towards the bridge and head back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Important note: The path is submerged during spring tides (high tidal range). It is therefore advisable to check this before setting off.

The path is often uneven, so sturdy footwear will help prevent twisted ankles. There are no water sources, except perhaps at Port Madelon, if the restaurant is open.

Worth a visit

The numerous Affut ponds along the route offer the chance to see many wild birds: swans, geese and ducks.
