To reach the car park, take the road (signposted) at the hairpin bend on the outskirts of Termignon, which leads to the Bellecombe car park 12 km away. Beyond this point, traffic is restricted.
(S/E) Head south for about 50 metres.
Take the small footbridge on the left to climb a grassy path and reach theGR®5.
(1) Turn right onto thisGR® trail, which is a wide stone track leading to alpine chalets, with a moderate slope.
Ford the Piou stream and, shortly after this crossing, you will reach a crossroads.
(2) Leave theGR® here and take a narrow path on the left that climbs up into the mountain pasture. Note: there are no markings.
After a steady climb, you will reach the Col de Lanserlia.
(3) From the pass, you can make a round trip eastwards to see the largest of the lakes. Then set off again, climbing to the right along a well-marked path to reach an unnamed pass.
(4) From the pass, head left (south) to easily reach the summit at an altitude of 2,879 metres.
(5) Return to the pass.
(4) Continue straight ahead (northeast) to reach the summit of Pointe de Lanserlia (2909m).
(6) From the summit, take a good look at the landscape to anticipate the rest of the hike, which will continue without markings and on paths that disappear into the landscape.
There are three options for the descent:
- via the ascent path,
- via a path that heads east towards the lakes,
- via a path heading north to reach a pass at the foot of the ruiniform rocks of Lanserlia.
We will take the latter route.
Continue north to quickly reach a pass. Descend to the right on a faint path, pass upstream of a sinkhole, and try not to lose altitude too quickly by keeping an east-southeast direction. Eventually reach the bottom of the valley to cross a path and the Fontabert stream.
(7) At this point, there are also two options:
- take the path downhill to the left, follow the stream to reach the crossroads at point 11. This considerably shortens the hike, which can then be considered of medium difficulty.
- Continue the route by heading north-east up the foot of the Grand Roc Noir scree slope, keeping a stream on your right. This is the route we take, occasionally following a path that runs alongside the stream. This will take you to the Reculée plateau.
(8) Begin the descent, keeping the Vallonnet stream on your right. Soon you will see a lake at the foot of the imposing moraine of the Vallonnet Glacier.
Walk along the grassy slope overlooking the lake.
Note: to avoid walking halfway up the slope, climb back up to the ridge.
As you descend, move away from the stream to the left so that you do not descend into the canyon, but without veering towards the rocky outcrops further to the left. Join the track that runs through the Rocheure valley.
(9) Follow the track to the left, which is almost flat, and walk past the Chapelle Saint-Jacques chapel. You will reach a fork in the track marked by a sign.
(10) Go up the path on the left and cross the Fontabert stream via a small wooden footbridge. You will reach another intersection of paths.
(11) Continue straight ahead, heading west towards the Plan du Lac refuge (the refuge is 30 minutes away and the car park is 1 hour away). The route becomes almost horizontal and goes around the Trou du Chaudron on the left. You will reach the refuge.
(12) Here, rejoin theGR®5and head south-southwest to pass along the edge of Plan du Lac and return to the car park (S/E).
