Refuge de l'Arpont - Refuge de la Fournache

Stage7 of this journey takes you from the Refuge de l’Arpont to the very welcoming Refuge de la Fournache. This stage skirts around the Dent Parrachée. This is the last time you will see the Vanoise glaciers. This trail, which is at times technical and challenging due to its elevation gain, overlooks the Maurienne Valley, Val Cénis and, on the other side, Italy. You will also catch a glimpse of the Thabor, before arriving at the bottom of Aussois, with its two lakes and the Aussois dam.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise starting from Modane

Description of the walk

(S) Set off from the Refuge de l’Arpont via theGR®5. The path runs past the foot of a splendid waterfall from a torrent flowing directly down from the Arpont Glacier.
The path passes through old summer pasture villages, including the Chapelle Saint-Laurent ::1;; then reaches the Chalets du Mont, where it joins the path leading up to the Pont du Châtelard.

(2) Keep to the right on theGR®5. Begin the ascent to reach the ridge overlooking the Juliette. Continue downhill to a new junction, where the path from Montafia joins.

(3) Keep to the right on the GR®. Resume the climb to reach another high point.

(4) Descend slightly; theGR® veers left and joins a new path coming from the Sollières-Sardières valley.

(5) Begin another gentle ascent; before the next high point, cross a series of small streams and reach this high point at the foot of the Roc des Corneilles.

(6) Change direction here and head south. Reach the Turra crossroads.

(7) Turn right at a 90° angle.
Caution here: After La Turra, the path is tricky due to numerous landslides along the trail
Continue due west along an almost level track. Cross the Armoise chairlift. You will soon reach the hamlet of Djoin.

(8) Stay on theGR®5, which here becomes a wide track below the path leading up to the Plan Sec refuge, until you reach a junction.

(9) Leave the wide track and head down to the left. Cross the footbridge over a stream. You will very quickly reach the Refuge de la Fournache on the right (E).

Notes

I recommend staying at the Refuge de la Fournache. Everything there is perfect: the welcome, the meals, the camping spot – everything is there to ensure you have a lovely time.
Water sources are scarce on this section. The elevation gain is sometimes significant.

The second stage of our three-day route through the Vanoise. This second stage is slightly less spectacular than the first in terms of scenery, as we’re almost always looking down over the valley from a high vantage point, but it’s still very beautiful. The refuge is very, very good and has limited capacity. Excellent meal. The third stage via the Col d’Aussois, descending to Prioux in Pralognan, is very beautiful but tiring due to the descent from the Pointe de l’Observatoire – a must-do – to the Col d’Aussois and on to Prioux. Lots of rocks.
