The hedgerows

The old marked trail around Ambricourt is unfortunately poorly maintained or not maintained at all. We have been walking it for 25 years and have encountered difficulties every time (poor signage, paths buried under nettles or difficult to walk on).
The start at Teneur allows you to pass (twice) in front of the superb limestone hillside of Teneur. Deer are often visible in or around the Bois de Crépy

The path is in very poor condition between points (2) and (6).

If possible, avoid the period between mid-June and mid-August. The passage after point (3) will be easier if the field is not too far into the growing season or has already been harvested.

Description of the walk

Departure: Teneur, Rue de Tilly-Capelle: a few parking spaces near the church.

(S/E) Head north-east and immediately turn left onto Chemin d'Ambricourt for 100 metres.

(1) Turn right onto the wide path leading towards the woods. Very soon, on the right, you can admire the Teneur hillside (explanatory sign on the way back).
Ignore a path on the left and arrive at the edge of the woods. Enter the woods, staying on the same path. You will soon arrive at a crossroads.

(2) Take the path on the right (very grassy) to reach a new crossroads just after a short steep climb. Turn left and pass a half-collapsed breeze block hut (yellow mark on a tree on the right shortly after the hut).
From there, continue almost straight ahead until you reach the edge of the woods.

(3) You will reach a crossroads (yellow cross on the right, private on the left). Go straight ahead uphill.

(4) You will reach a large road climbing up to the right (private).
Go straight ahead and reach the edge of the woods (cleared area).

(5) Take the grassy path with ferns straight ahead.
Very soon, it slopes to the left and there is an opening in the hedge that leads to the field (mowed on 14 August 2025)

(6) Reach the field and follow the edge on the left. This is a difficult section, as the path is actually a small stream (usually dry, but deep and therefore dangerous for ankles). It is best to walk as close as possible to the crops and clean your shoes when you exit. Outside the growing season, this passage becomes much easier. Reach a very wide path.

(7) Follow it to the right to reach a small road, which you follow to the right. Reach the hamlet of Crépieul. Ignore the road that branches off to the right (towards Crépy) and reach the D71E.

(8) Follow it for a few moments on the left and turn right onto Chemin de Canlers. Continue in the same direction. Ignore the turnings on the left and right and continue towards the wind turbines.

(9) At the wind turbine, turn left onto the ridge path. Keep going in the same direction until you reach the D71, cross it and take the pretty path opposite. You will come to a T-junction.

(10) Turn right until you reach the centre of Tramecourt: a beautiful square with a church and castle with a lovely tree-lined avenue. Continue along Rue de Maisoncelle. Turn left (signposted Maisoncelle) and you will arrive opposite a farm.

(11) Continue straight ahead, passing through two gates (make sure you close them behind you!), and continue along the edge of the woods. The path turns left at a right angle (hiking arrow) and continues along the edge of the woods until it reaches a crossroads.

(12) Take the path opposite, which descends slightly and arrives at a hollow (grove on the left).

(13) Continue along the path to the D 71, follow it to the right for about 100 metres and turn right (Chemin de Froideval). At the T-junction, turn right again and you will soon find a path leading off to the left (signpost).

(14) Take this path, which turns left and reaches a T-junction.

(15) Turn right. At the three-way junction, turn left. After 300 m, leave the tarmac road and take the path on the left. It turns slightly left, then right at a 90° angle. Ignore the path coming from the right and continue straight ahead. After a 90° left turn, head towards the woods and enter them.

(16) Immediately take the path on the right at the edge (numerous yellow markings): clear path to (2).
At the three-way junction, turn right under the trees (yellow markings). Follow this path, which stays close to the edge of the forest. It eventually turns left at a 90° angle to reach a T-junction.
Turn right and pass a feeding trough for pheasants. Continue on the same path, which veers slightly to the right, to reach a crossroads you passed on the way there.

(2) Turn right onto the path you came from, taking another look at the beautiful hillside. When you reach the initial crossroads, near Teneur

(1) Go straight ahead towards the bell tower and arrive near a house.
There are two options:
- take the path on the left that leads to the cemetery. Exit through the large gate and turn left onto Rue de l'Église to reach the car park. (total 16 km).
- find a narrow path above the house (blue signpost: sentier des 3 clochers).
Follow this beautiful hillside path, which eventually descends to a house. The path widens and reaches a T-junction.

(17) Turn right and reach a new T-junction.

(18) Turn left and reach the D 97. Cross it and take the wide path opposite to join Rue du Moulin. Follow it on the left and reach the D 97 again.

(19) Take the path opposite (blue signpost) and continue until you reach a green barrier.
You will then see a beautiful path on the right-hand side, running alongside a stream (two footbridges).
You will soon reach Rue de l'Église. Follow it to the right to reach the car park (S/E).

I completed this route in trail running mode with my daughter... some of the trails were difficult to find, but with the map we were able to get back on track... other more challenging sections were completed walking...
The castle is magnificent, as is the little church next to it! A beautiful route to discover, completed in 1 hour and 40 minutes!
