Description of the walk

Start: Blangy-sur-Ternoise Town Hall.

(S/E) With your back to the railway line, head towards the Ternoise (mill on the left). Cross it and turn left (Rue de la Chapelle) to reach a T-junction. Turn left for 150 m.

(1) Turn right onto the lovely uphill path. Join a wide track and follow it to the right (GR®,GRP®) to reach a T-junction.

(2) Turn left to cross the Bois de l'Abbaye. As you leave the woods, the path slopes to the left. Keep going in the same direction until you reach a junction (Maisoncelle)

(3) Turn left onto Longue Rue and reach a T-junction.

(4) Turn left onto Rue du Bois. Stay on this good path which approaches the Bois de Vaulx, then runs alongside it at a distance (private property, which is a shame, as there is a good path running through it). You eventually reach a crossroads (elevation 108, “Mont de Fressin”).

(5) Turn right to follow the Rietz de Vaulx. The path is a bit tricky in places and leads to a T-junction.

(6) Turn left. Ignore the path branching off to the right which runs alongside the Bois Brûlé (All the paths in this area are now designated as private, which is a real shame). Continue in the same direction, first uphill, then downhill. The path becomes a small tarmac road.
Just before a sharp left-hand bend, you join theGRP® Ternois Sud.

(7) Follow it for about fifty metres s on the right.

(8) Don’t miss the path that descends steeply to the left towards Blingel. Reach a T-junction. Turn left, then immediately right (calvary) onto Rue de l’Église. Cross the Ternoise, pass in front of the stud farm and arrive at the railway line.

(9) Turn left before the railway line. It’s now very straightforward; simply follow the railway line for about 1.5 km.

(10) Cross a small road and continue straight ahead, still following the railway line (campsite on the left). After another 600 m, you’ll reach another small road. Follow it to the left and you’ll reach the town hall (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes, of course.

This circular route can easily be combined with the walk entitled "The Ternoise hills near Auchy" to create a route of around 25 km starting from Blangy.

I revised this walk in September 2020 because the paths I used to take are now designated as PRIVATE.

Worth a visit

Mill in Blangy.

Hello,
There is a map missing for the new route (point 3-4)

Yes to both questions.
What ‘bothered’ us (that’s not quite the right word) wasn’t necessarily the gate itself, as it was easy to get through, but rather the idea of trespassing on private property. Yet on one side there are fields and on the other the woods, followed by Rue du Bois... We thought it might be for cows, but we then saw the sign as we closed the gate. But it doesn’t matter; it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the walk in any way.

Did the barrier look new to you?

Is it easy to open?

The paths are very well maintained; it’s lovely.
The walk itself is also lovely.

One question, however: Just before point No. 4, near the farm building, we come across a closed gate blocking our path (there is no other way through, and we are sure we are on the right track thanks to the app’s GPS track and the fact that we are locals).
When we closed it behind us after passing through (we had no choice), we came across a ‘no entry’ sign that is only visible if you’re walking the route in the opposite direction. It’s rather odd, as it effectively ‘prohibits’ you from leaving the woods and the land on which the building stands, and thus ‘prohibits’ you from entering the countryside rather than the other way round...

20 December 2018. Grey skies. (Very) muddy paths. It’s clear that the area has had a lot of rain in recent weeks. It’s a shame we have to worry more about where we’re stepping than about taking in the scenery.
