Description of the walk

Access: Cross the resort of Méribel to reach the Mottaret area. At the entrance to the resort, head straight on; the road passes through a tunnel beneath some buildings and ends at a large car park, the Chatelet car park, before a wooden archway marking the entrance to the Tuéda Nature Reserve.

(S/E) From the car park, start climbing along a good path to reach Lac de Tuéda.

(1) Walk along the lake on a path suitable for people with reduced mobility and you will soon reach the far end of the lake.

(2) Turn right, then, at the crossroads, follow a lovely track to the left. 300 m further on, you’ll reach a junction.

(3) Leave the track and head up to the left along a stony path, passing the Refuge du Plan.

(4) Shortly afterwards, the path descends slightly to cross the Doron des Allues via a wide wooden bridge.

(5) Immediately after the bridge, take the path climbing to the left, leaving the track behind. The path will cross the track twice before finally rejoining it. Continue climbing along the track and, after a slight descent, reach a junction.

(6) Ignore the path leading left towards a footbridge, and continue up the Vallon du Fruit, following the Doron. A long, almost level stretch leads to the foot of a steep slope which you must climb to reach the Refuge du Saut.

(7) From the refuge, the route is described as “unmarked”. However, the path is clearly signposted. Continue to the right of the refuge, first along the valley floor, then along a path that climbs to cross the gorge. Continue further along a ledge path to fords a small stream.

(8) After crossing the stream, continue climbing to reach a footbridge.

(9) Cross the footbridge, ignore the path heading straight ahead and continue the ascent, initially running alongside the stream. Gradually, the path moves away from the stream to climb up towards the glacier’s moraine; the path becomes less clearly marked on the ground, so follow the cairns which, one after the other, lead to the Col du Soufre.

(10) Col du Soufre: descend via the same route. The cairns become more visible on the descent; you will reach the car park around ten hours after leaving it (S/E).

A lovely round-trip route with stunning views of the glacial valleys. There are plenty of marmots around the summer pastures near the Saut refuge. The climb up to the Col du Soufre takes you through vibrantly coloured terrain, especially after a light shower.

A day trip (there and back). Magnificent and varied scenery, a world away from the Méribel valley and its ever-present ski lifts.
A tip: once you reach the Col du Souffre, don’t hesitate to start the descent towards Péclet Polset for a few hundred metres, so you can discover the breathtaking panorama of Lac Blanc, which you’d never guess existed if you stayed at the top of the pass.
Thank you for this route, which I absolutely loved!

A two-day hike.
On the first day, an easy climb to the Refuge du Saut.
After a night at the refuge, setting off at 8.00 am, we climbed towards the Col du Soufre. The only difficulty lies in the elevation gain and the altitude.
This hike is a true marvel of what nature has to offer. The beauty of the changing landscapes as you climb towards the pass. Flowers, trees, streams... etc. give way to mineral formations, rocks that look almost lunar or even Martian by the end of the hike.
The landscape is truly beautiful.
A hike not to be missed.

A superb hike, a bit long (we spent the night at the Saut refuge on the way up) but with no technical difficulties. The contrast in colours between the white gypsum, the ochre of the Cargneules and the black of the metamorphic rocks is stunning upon reaching the pass. Beautiful views of the Pointe de l’Echelle, the Gébroulaz Glacier and the Aiguilles de Peclet and Polset.
On the climb up to the pass, when you reach the moraine, make sure to follow the cairns and the path to the left. A hiker who knows the area well gave us a great deal of help. A couple we met at the refuge got a bit lost and found themselves in a tricky spot!
Thank you for this lovely route
